I'm going to an indy transmission shop tomorrow and they quoted me 400$ for a fluid and filter change on the ZF8HP, should I be wary or is this just a good deal, the shop has 4.9 stars on google and 4.6 on yelp so I'm unsure.

That's reasonable to me, quite fair as long as they use ZF8 fluid.

Parts alone are around $260 from FCP Euro. This is about a 2-3 hour job and should cost around $500 ish all included from what I and other people have seen.
See this thread: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/900095-Transmission-oil-filter-change-ballpack-cost-from-a-shop
$400 seems a little cheap.

If I recall correctly, the filter was built into the “pan” in the ZF HP6 in my old bmw. Parts were over were well over $300. $400 seems like a really good deal or something maybe is missing. I’d expect more like $500/600.

The Audi ZF8HP has a separate filter from the pan that requires the pan to come out to access because audi uses a metal pan but their quote was just a number and not an invoice so they may have missed the filter

Are they going to use the actual ZF fluid or an aftermarket?

ZF fluid is $25/qt * 8 qts = $200
filter (pan) is $200+
$400 is too cheap.
they have to be using cheap parts, non approved fluid, giving away labor, or a combination of these options.
Id be nervous if i was you.

Depending on the buying power of the transmission shop they are likely paying a lot less than retail, though I do agree that if retail for fluids parts is what they're charging including labor, its doesn't quite pass the old sniff test

sure, so its $300 for parts only as a kit, the shop is charging approx 1hr for labor?
even if the shop got the parts cheaper than retail, they are most likely not passing all that savings onto customers.

Agreed, after I posted earlier I realized that wasn't really your point. They would more than likely charge retail for parts/fluid plus their labor, so something does seem a bit off unless the shop owner is feeling particularly generous lol

The pan on BMW was Plastic.... not knocking BMW as I’ve had a few and drove them like I stole them... never one issue at an auto cross or track day.
Anyway, back on point, I can see a trans filter retailing for maybe $50(ish) a pan gasket should be included with the job if the pan is coming down ( God awful mess) and 8qts of ZF 8 and Valpo noted, retails for about $200. Perhaps parts are less than expected and the shop owner is doing jobs now at or near his marginal labor rate just to keep people employed...

I wouldn't use Pentosin or any other brand. Lifeguard 8 isn't duplicated, licensed under different names or rebranded on any level. I know it's dumb to be so picky about a fluid, but the transmission has a way longer fluid interval than the engine does.

They used Motul atf and meyle filter, also had them do front center and read diffs with Motul gear oil, out the door with labor was 460$ not bad eh car runs fine, shifts are maybe a bit smoother than before but the car has 80k miles so what can you expect

Labor was only 209, I can definitely tell they did the diffs because it's a lot quieter in the car

Dealer would have probably charged twice as much... happy to hear the job was done affordably.” Enjoy!

Over the summer I bought a quart of ZF for I think $20 but I cannot find that source at this time. Dealer wanted $40/quart.
I honestly don’t know enough about the formulation on it but it would be interesting to know who made the oil for ZF. All they did was specify to someone what they wanted. The ZF trans is used in the Dodge Ram truck so it would be interesting to know what their forum members recommend. There should be something aftermarket that meets spec.

Here’s a link to a Dodge Ram forum discussion on their ZF 8 speed.
https://www.ramforum.com/threads/zf-8-speed-transmission-replacement-fluid-poll.168330/
OEM, lifeguard, redline D6, amsoil, valvoline max life seem to be the main ones used. The poll data isn’t huge I will say that

I tried to research this a few years ago, and it “seemed” to me that the ZF fluid was made by Shell, but from what I recall, the information wasn’t as conclusive as I wanted. I ended-up buying a packaged pan with gasket and née bolts, and ultimately used ZF.
That said, I’ve used Redline in lots of applications (motor, gearbox and diffs) before and may consider their equivalent at about 60-80k miles.

Sent from my iPhone using Audizine (http://r.tapatalk.com/byo?rid=87676)I believe the shop I went to used Motul VI trans fluid, supposedly in transmission shop circles someone figured out that dextron vi and lifeguard 8 were nearly identical and only had different friction modifiers, which apparently Motul added to Motul VI so that's what they used
