Hey everyone,

Was wondering what experience, recommendations, and setups others had with aftermarket exhaust systems. I've surfed the videos on youtube etc. to sample some sounds both on the A6 and S4/5 cars since they use the same 3.0t engine. I really like the sound of the 3.0t - very similar to an R35 GTR and I adore the note overall. I really like the AWE Touring as an option but it is not valved which leaves me with noise and drone concerns during regular driving use. I'd be leaving the stock cats in as well for regulatory reasons and to avoid a more raspy sound.

I am going to guess that when browsing for options, selecting those which fit the S4/5 will not fit the A6 as the A6 is a larger car so placement of hardpoints, clearances of drivetrain etc. may be different. Anyone have experience in this?
What are your suggestions and setups? How's the drone if any? Any clips to share?

Thanks in advance!

My current setup is...

JHM test pipes > AWE resonated down pipes > stock mid muffler > stock rear mufflers

Sound wise, it mellow, but still has a rasp below 2k RPM.

I ordered a Magnaflow 11386, which arrived yesterday, and will have that welded in where the mid-muffler currently sits. I'm hoping that will do the trick.

I'm off Greenway and Tatum, and usually off Wednesdays, if you ever wanna swing by and check it out.

Correct me if I am wrong but from what I have read there is little to no HP gain by installing a new exhaust system because the stock system is fairly well engineered to begin with. Upgrading the flex / down pipe will net less than 10 HP but the stock flex / down pipe will flow very well for stock, stage 1 and most stage 2 upgrades.

That being said its it boils down to what sound you want. Some have suggested to simply cut out the rear mufflers and weld in a straight pipe. Update the tips and rear diffuser if you want to switch over to a 4 tip look.

also if your looking for a valved exhaust there are only few options... the pricey armytrix,

or s6 mufflers with the awe switch path wired in to swap the vavles from open to closed. i recently got a set of free s6 mufflers. just waiting to install and order the switch path wireing

If you want an affordable valved system that sounds solid, Cende is a Taiwanese company you can buy direct from and their exhaust costs around 1k with shipping for a stainless valved system. They also offer titanium. My friend just got his and I was impressed, especially for the price.

Alternatively a solid cheap option is remove the suitcase muffler, replace the baby resonators for a Magnaflow 11385, and swap the rear mufflers to oem B8 S4 mufflers. Its what I'm running for now and has minimal drone but sounds nice under WOT

I replaced my rear mufflers with straight pipes and added quad 3.5” angle cut tips. The sound is throaty and aggressive without any raspiness. I get a nice crack on the upshifts while in boost and the downshifts in sport mode with the ZF8 sound awesome. Total for this mod was only $370. $225 for tips and $45 for labor. The quad tips look great with the S-Line rear diffuser as well!

It does sound nice but the drone is unbearable for most without fear mufflers.

There is a drone at certain rpms/gears however it’s not difficult to work around. For example, I drive around town in sport mode but once I’m at speed (80mph) on the highway I put it in dynamic mode which drops the rpms to 2k and the exhaust note is quite subtle and IMO not intrusive at all. It’s personal preference for sure but I couldn’t be happier.

This seems like a nice one! I happened along a similar offering from IPE as well. An added advantage of the IPE is they have an auto mode for their valves. I would also guess this system would need to be ordered and installed at one of their specialized dealers...

I think I'd like to keep the stock look of the trapezoidal exhaust inserts. Makes it more sleeper imo and I think can accomodate a quad-tip setup without the actual tips. But I do agree, it's all about sound. The engine sounds good to begin with which is good starting point lol. Just need to have a great sounding system with no drone. That is the ultimate goal.

Here is my setup with S7 Sport exhaust. It’s the perfect sound in my opinion. No drone even in auto but still has good sound when you rip on it in dynamic mode plus has shift farts.

This has been my setup for the past 5 years. IMO is sounds the best on the 3.0T without being obnoxious. The only thing that might sound better is Akrapovic. I've thought about it for a while, but I figure why assume the expense when the Audi Sport exhaust sounds great to me.

You can always stay stock and just change the rear mufflers. I went RS7 rear mufflers. They sounds really very! Good with everything else stocks and with HFCs. With TPs not so good and why I’m selling mine.

Was searching the deep depths of YouTube and found this gem for an A7 in Malaysia being modded with an iPE exhaust with a fully functional controller based on the car's driving selector, throttle position, and RPM.
Plus this video shows that it kept the stock trapezoidal outlets but I am sure you could also accommodate a quad-tip solution as well. Sounds really quiet with valves closed, close to stock even.

Could just do a muffler delete. I did that on mine and it was too loud so I swapped to an OEM S7 exhaust.

I posted both videos here: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a7-192/2016-c-7-5-a7-3009856/
