View Full Version : Rear shock boot stuck

So I’ve had the Bilstein B12 kit installed for a few weeks and trying to solve a creaking noise coming from the rear. Figured out that the passenger side rear shock boot was stuck around the shock body causing the upper rubber part of the boot to come in and out of contact with the upper mount at ride height. So used wood blocks to dislodge the boot from the shock body and put it back in place (2nd pic).

But after just a few minutes of driving it was stuck around the shock body again and making noise as it came in and out of contact with the upper mount again. Are you not supposed to reuse the stock boots with the B12 kit? Drivers side works fine. Anybody else have this problem and have any tips?

Nobody else has had this problem? I couldn’t find it in search. If I’m having this problem with the B12 kit, I would think that those with even lower springs would be even more likely for this to occur as the slight taper in the boot would make contact with the top of the shock body sooner. Do the spring/shock setups lower than the B12 kit require/recommend the use of an aftermarket boot? TIA

I took the shock off again and removed the mount and boot. Then it was obvious what had happened. Apparently there is a cap up inside the shock boot that had come loose and fallen down to the shock body as shown in the 1st pic.

Then when the shock fully compressed and the boot came in contact with that cap it grabbed the boot and pulled it down out of the upper mount. Then the noise ensued as the top foam part of the boot creaked in and out of the mount. 2nd pic is the Bilstein shock without the misplaced cap on it.

I have no idea how or why that cap fell out of the boot, but I couldn’t see a good use for it so just reinstalled the boot without the cap. Noise is now gone and all is good (I think [emoji23]).
