View Full Version : RS7: Which 4.0TT exhaust has the biggest difference in sound between valve open/close

Hey all,
I like my exhaust to be quiet in comfort mode, but loud in dynamic mode.
I've viewed about every exhaust video I could find on YouTube but it's difficult to tell which one has what I'm looking for, so I'm hoping somebody has personal experience.
Generally I'm looking at the exhausts in the sub-3k range, so APR and Milltek. But they both have resonated and non-resonated models.
Does anybody know which has the biggest difference between valve open/closed modes?

Open and closed modes only refer to COD ... (4 cyl mode) for economy ...

No, I don’t think so. The exhaust is definitely louder when you switch to dynamic.
There's not many options for valved exhaust sub 3k. You mentioned the only two I know of so really it's 50/50. I'm staying clear of milltek due to some issues a few members have run across with squeaks and fluttering metal noises. That's just bad Q&A but I guess you get what you pay for. A lot of people do end up with milltek due to the bang for the buck since the other options are almost, if not double the price and more.

Does anybody know which has the biggest difference between valve open/closed modes? My RS7 came with a Magnaflow cat-back full exhaust. It works with the MMI settings and I do like the overall tone.

How loud is it with the valve closed? Could I trouble you for a video?

I have the APR with an X-pipe and no center muffler, and HPA catted DPs, and the difference is pretty huge valves closed to open. I have an AWE SwitchPath to control them, which is the perfect setup in my opinion. Valves open, very loud, valves closed, similar to factory sport but deeper and a bit louder.

Man I wish we had an RS specific forum so this crap didn't come up so often. S6/S7: only one muffler is valved to control 4 cyl COD noise. RS7: both mufflers are valved for the traditional reason: closed valves quiet down exhaust in all modes, open valves make it louder.

My milltek non res with stock dps is pretty darn loud with valves open, valves closed it is moderately loud but still louder than stock imo but not by much. I didn't have the sport OEM exhaust so I am comparing to the non sport OEM option.

Well...
S6/S7 has two valves also.
Non-sport exhaust, both valves are after the muffler, nearer to the tailpipes, blocking one of the two tailpipes on each side.
Sport exhaust, one side is before the muffler (effectively able to block that entire muffler) and the other side is after the muffler in regular location blocking only one of the two tailpipes..
To be fair, while the RS7 and S8 may behave in this "closed valves quiet" "open valves louder" they also both must be closed in 4-cylinder operation, otherwise it contradicts the whole point of the CoD noise reduction since Audi states ANC is not enough to cancel out the bad noises from 4-cylinder operation. So for the RS7/S8 at least, it seems they serve a dual function.

Is that different for the C7.5? I thought there was only one valve in that application for S6/S7. Regardless, I still feel like this issue comes up in every RS exhaust thread since there are so many more people with S6/S7s and most are not as knowledgeable as you.

How loud is it with the valve closed? Could I trouble you for a video?I'll try to get you some videos for you this weekend. It's pretty loud on a cold start but not bad with valves closed. Loudest point is just under 2k.

Maybe the resonated version would be better then. Idk the resonated versions sound pretty close to the stock sport exhaust
