How many labour hours should a shop quote me to replace the rear main seal? Its a 2010 manual S4. Mine has started to leak. Losing about 1L every 4000kms. Its dripping down onto the splash shield. So it is not minor.

Just an estimate but I would think $2k-3k. Alot of time to drop exhaust, driveline, drop trans, pull clutch etc.. just to do a main seal. Best time to do the clutch if needed too.

Are you sure it’s the rear main seal? Do you see oil on the flywheel? Mine was dripping from the bottom of the tranny, but if you take the inspection cover off - the flywheel was dry. Now that I dropped the transmission, it seems to be leaky timing chain covers that drip on the bellhousing and leak down to the bottom.

+1, could be either timing chain covers or an oil filter housing or its gasket.

Thought I had a rear main seal leak and turned out to be oil filter housing gasket and upper timing chain covers

Related--I'm having the clutch done on my 45K-mile '15, and the shop recommended doing the RMS while they have it apart, so it's getting done too. Seemed kind of odd to replace the seal on a low-mile not-very-old car, but since the labor is so much otherwise, might as well. Speaking of labor, this shop, which is in St. Louis, quoted about $1300 for clutch job labor, and said that the RMS would be less than $100 additional parts and labor.

Sorry for stealing the thread - what does it take to replace seals on timing chain covers? Does the engine have to come out?

I don't think so, but I did mine when the engine was out. To do this in the car, you'll need to undo the cats to be able to remove the bolts for secondary air injection valve's heat shields and the air injection valves themselves. I'd think that SC will have to come out as well to have more clearance to torque some bolts. Oil filter housing also might get in a way, but might not become an issue.

Mine turned out to be upper oil timing chain covers and valve cover gaskets. I had the clutch replaced and all those gaskets replaced at the same time.

Have you replaced the lower timing cover gasket as well?

I don't believe so. I know for sure my rear main seal was dry and not replaced.
