View Full Version : Thinking of selling RS7 and getting a Q8
So I think I want to sell my RS7, we have Q7 that my wife drives. I’d like to get a Q8 as I don’t think I need anything too sporty anymore and being able to take it up to the moment aims would be nice.
Anyone drive a Q8? Any thoughts? I’m not looking to spend $100k so an SQ8 is not in the cards.
Also trying to decide if I try to sell the RS7 private party or just trade it in. Being a CPO I feel there is value in the CPO warranty.
Any thoughts or tips greatly appreciated.
My buddy test drove a Q8 and didn't like the ride. Was too sluggish.

Yeah I haven’t test driven one either. A little reluctant with Covid. I bought a truck a few months ago and it was not fun sitting in the financing office.

My RS7 is at the dealer and I actually have a Q8 loaner lol.
Don't do it. This thing is a sloshy dog. BMW SUVs stomp all over these Q-series imo.
Lmk if you have any specific questions

Had a Q8 loaner.
Was impressed with the seats, the comfort, the luxury, the electric window shades.
Sloshy dog. Slow to move. No connection to the road. Would be great for a road trip as it's VERY comfortable, but totally uninspiring drive.

Thanks for the comments all. Need to drive one. Autocorrect on iPhone sucks but I meant to get up to the mountains in my first post.
SQ8 is doable but a lot of money for a car that will have limited resell, IMHO.

Not sure what trim/packages you’re looking at, but even a Prestige Q8 with minimal packages will get you around $90k
Look at the S-models or RS models - the resale is there, especially compared to the not sport models. Any car bought brand new and sold under 3-5 years, will take a huge loss in depreciation.
Spend the extra $15k-$20l and get the SQ8. That’s also me spending your money [emoji12]

Full disclosure, I haven't driven either. IMO the Q8 looks meh at best, and is underpowered. I would never trade a C7 RS7 for one, but thats just me personally.

Just traded in my 2018 S6 for a 2021 SQ7. My S6 was tuned running e85 and was pretty darn quick. I’d be lying if I said the SQ7 was faster BUT... the technology, the ergonomics, the space and THE EXHAUST sound are simply amazing for an SUV. I can fit several golf bags, plus passengers and still do 130mph down the highway no problem. The torque off the line is hilarious. I miss the handling of the S6 and the mid-range power a little but the SQ7 is so much more car for the money, as is the SQ8. Plus it didn’t hurt that I got a unicorn deal on it where my payments hardly budged. End of the year... make em a deal!!!

How much space do you really need? SQ5 prestige + tune?

Rear end is sick for a SUV. The front end looks best on darker colors. The headlights and black trim takes some getting used to.

Honestly that’s a real option too. And would make commute parking easier.

I had a q8 prestige for 2 weeks as a loaner and hated it. I understand wanting a change but for cost effective a q8 is not. My loaner
was 90k and was a disappointment, even my wife said she preferred my s6 over it and she has a q5. I would buy the a6 allroad before q8 but to each there own.

My wife drives a Q8 and it’s a nice vehicle, but it is a dog for sure. They finally fixed massive turbo lag with an updated ECU revision that helped some. The ride and technology are great, but it’s missing the 4.0T. I haven’t watched but if there was a decent tune and some stg II level mods, then it would likely be much more fun to drive. We have the sport model and the tires are more expensive than my RS7, ugh. I would certainly consider the SQ7 or the SQ8, RSQ8.

I don't know how you go backwards in horsepower, rsq8 or nothing. I drove a q7 for a month I was impressed with the all wheel steering and handling, the v6 was okay. I would be getting either a used 2020 or rsq8.

It's not such a dog with the V6TT... It's a dog because you get into it after the experience of driving your "highly" modified RS. It's just not a fair comparison. For the average Q8 buyer, it's perfectly fine. As far as they're concerned they have a pretty quick heavy-ass SUV.

Not true at all, we went from a Cadillac SUV to the Q8. My wife wants to go back to the Caddy for many reasons. The Q8 V6 has a lot of turbo lag from a stop and we were at a point where we were considering it not safe to drive, and we were not alone. Audi finally released an ECU update and it’s better but still not great. Also, my car has been in Vegas for quite some time now, actually the majority of our Q8 ownership experience. My 2.0t GTI is much more responsive. While the tech is nice, it also has flaws. Some very annoying ones. For example, in the summer if the MMI gets too hot, it simply doesn’t come on. The Apple Car Play with wireless connectivity sucks terribly and will keep reconnecting when you don’t want it too. We have also had odd MMI issues and have tried updates to no avail at this point.

Point acknowledged... but don't compare the responsiveness of the nimble 2.0T GTI, and a battleship Q8 3.0TT, again not fair Lol-

Just commenting on my experience. Take it as you will, the Q8 V6 is a dog off the line and situations were you want reasonable responsiveness. And no it’s not a weight issue, it’s a tuning issue where you mash the throttle and it takes too long for the motor to even acknowledge that it’s occurred. If APR (or even Audi) or someone released a proper tune for it, it would likely change my opinion drastically.

I guess my gentle push-back is based on my experience with a Q8 in 2019. My wife's A8L was in for service, and we had a Q8 loaner. My initial impression was " for a big heavy "truck" this thing moves pretty well." My wife actually thought of a trade. That all came to a head with the onset of COVID. You're a Hawk, aren't you? Cyclone LB here.

Sell the RS7 Private Party to maximize returns and buy a CPO Porsche Cayenne S or Turbo, still in the VAG group and won't feel like a compromise.

The 3.0T is terribly laggy from Audi. Transmission feels like crap. The S4's (B9) have tunes (ECU) out for them now. They make a drastic difference on the performance, and help the trans a lot. Not perfect, but a lot better. TCU tunes are expected shortly (next month or so), this should close the last bit needed on the trans.
Once these S4's are tuned. It will trickle down to the Q8's and others.
Go Clones.

Audi isn’t the only OEM that has laggy throttle response - my wife’s Jeep GC does, my pops Silverado does and I’m sure a whole list of others.
My only assumption... fuel consumption... aka fuel economy gains.
Or maybe they are going for safety... take away the lead foot drivers, or accidental gas pedal pushers and it might save a few bumpers (long shot! Haha)

Our Q7 was beyond laggy too, the whole drive by wire crap. I put a sprint booster on our Q7 long ago and sure helped the problem a lot.

Agreed 100%. I drove a Q8 for a week and couldn’t wait to give it back but my wife liked it. How about a used S8? More comfortable than the RS7, roomier and still a good performer when you need it.

That’s funny an S8 was what I wanted but then fell in love with the RS7. Not a bad idea.
Thanks all for the comments!
Took the wife out in the RS7 last night and we both loved it. Just haven’t driven it much this year. I’ve decided to keep it until next year when the CPO expires.
Wife says she’ll drive it and I can drive her Q7, I declined :)
Thanks for all the thoughts.

Not to threadjack, but i know the feeling of the OP. similarly i think of how much my car payment for the RS7 is and then the thought crosses my head of selling it. I've done the math (maybe i shoudlnt have?) and my current driving routine costs my cost of ownership at about $7.5/mile on the RS7, including car payment/insurance/gas.
I now have a Land Rover Lr4 as my daily and have began to really like it. the luxury, ease of driving and not having to care of damage for hitting every minor bump in the road makes it a pleasure to drive.
so then i begin to think about what i could sell both cars for and get an all-in-one fast car (suv?)? its about this time i realize that absolute nothing fits the bill. most cars are comparable and would be a relatively lateral move for a good chunk of change more. maybe some new technology in the infotainment, but nothing groundbreaking to give up the current RS7. and even giving up .5 second 0-60 would put you you in a $150-200k SUV range.
there is also the time every other weekend when i take the RS7 out of the garage and puts the biggest grin on my face. its a real love/hate relationship of my wallet and happiness. lol.
Well to follow up I put a deposit down today on an SQ8 Prestige in Daytona Gray with Titanium Black Optics and Sports packages. Should be nicely optioned.
Should arrive in February and I will trade in the RS7 just a bit before the CPO warranty expires.

Awesome thanks! I think it’s a pretty good setup. Can’t wait to get it.
Hey just wanted to circle back and thank all of you. This group has been amazing during my c7.5 A7 and RS7 ownership. The RS7 is gone and I ended up going with an Etron GT.
So similar and yet so different.
Plan is to tint, PPF and ceramic coat in a couple weeks. I am also considering some Vossen HF3’s but we will see. The Performance pack wheels are the best of the GT wheels.
