View Full Version : Easy Bose Subwoofer Upgrade?

My kid has a 2008 A4 Quattro Sedan. He would like to upgrade his subwoofer. Is there an easy way to do this? I have searched and it seems overly complicated. How about just an upgraded speaker to take the place of the Bose subwoofer? Is the Bose system 2 ohm or something obscure?

Bose is 2ohm. Drop in replacements are not common,
Would suggest splicing into the signal lines to create an RCA signal, or a line level converter. Then add a traditional amp and subwoofer.

2 ohm subwoofers are pretty common. You can do that no problem. However, in terms of increased bass, it likely won't create the results he is trying to achieve. It will be better, but it's not going to rattle the windows. Free air subs are terrible. You might consider an 8" sub in a sealed enclosure.

They sell reducer rings. I'd get an alpine type R 8" and run lines to it off the bose amp and see if he likes it. If it is not enough, do as PNW suggests and run the signal into an amp then out to the sub. A 10" in the cubby box should provide plenty of boom.
I just finished an upgrade on my own subwoofer this summer.
The route I chose to go was to dismantle a JL Audio CP108LG-W3v3 powered 8” subwoofer box. I chose this mostly because of having one sitting in my garage. But after completing it, I really love to sound so I would recommend it if you feel the price is okay. Check out eBay for a good deal. It’s 4 ohm but it isn’t a problem because I also utilized the built-in amplifier.
To keep the install cheap, I took apart and cut up my factory subwoofer. I used the plastic frame as an OEM fitting ring. I hate cutting factory wiring, so to get the signal from the factory radio, I cut the connector off the factory sub to use as an adapter to tap into the output of the Bose amp. By cutting the ends off one side of an RCA cable, I was able to solder it to the now loose connector from the old sub and then run to the JL amp.
For placement of the amp, I decided to store it where the Sirius radio unit is stored in the trunk. It meant cutting up the frame a good bit but the placement is great for heat dissipation since there’s a large cavity behind it and the carpeting panel is vented. Where is the sub located in the B6 Avant? (Not that I have looked as of yet, been working on other stuff mostly maintenance and performance stuff so far)

Start by pulling the rear side trim at the roof. Remove the metal mesh grille and the torx screws holding the rear shelf to the subwoofer. With the seats folded down, unclip the now exposed front lip of the rear shelf. Then it’s just a matter of sliding the piece towards you, away from the hidden clips under the glass. Take care to unplug the 3rd brake light.

its behind the passenger side trunk trim panel. The avant sub is a 6.5" woofer mounted to a plastic box. Its sorta crappy but mostly does the job.
