Hey guys,

Ive had my car for a while now and the sunglass holder has always been stuck shut. The latching mechanism will only stay in the locked position, super annoying and I like keeping my glasses above the rear view. After not finding any posts on what is wrong I decided to find out myself.

I finally got a cheap trim removal kit and was able to get the holder open.

Above the sunglass holder is a T25 screw that holds the whole overhead console up. Remove the console and disconnect all the connectors and find a well lit area to work on it. There are also 2 metal clips that will probably fall off, so keep an eye on those.

Next to the remove screw hole in the console, you will see a very small rectangular piece with a "claw" on the underside of it. See photos. This is a little $10 piece that audi decided is good enough. (part# 4F0947117) You need to remove this with two very thin strong things? to pinch the sides and push down. (I used small trim removal keys to pinch it)

Replace the piece and just reconstruct and make sure the metal clips are back on and all connectors are plugged in properly.

See photos for.... pics of parts.

I just kept pushing on mine and it eventually opened, and hasn't had a problem since thankfully.

For some reason Audi reserved the sunglasses storage for the prestige trim.

Yea, only with the ambient lighting package.

They sell some holders that replace the "oh shit handle" above the drivers window . May be an option for some.

Not exactly true.
Correct, my Premium Plus with ambient lighting package has it.

This must be one of those off label options/packages where they are not listed in a standard brochure, like soft close doors.

This must be one of those off label options/packages where they are not listed in a standard brochure, like soft close doors.I wouldn't have guessed it either. I assumed it was standard. I had one in each of my Audi's since 2008 and only one of those was a Prestige.

I had the problem where the sunglasses holder wouldn't latch and stay close.

Similar to you, I searched everywhere without luck on this forum, but found something similar in another audi forum.
In summary, if you are replacing that clip, you don't even need to remove the console - hopefully this will help others in the future.

Do the following:

** Take a look at the replacement part in hand so you have a reference on where the security points are **

1) take a needle nose pliers, pinch the "claws" and pull straight down, if should pop out with not too much force along with the spring inside. Try to pull with control, if not you might send the little spring flying into your cabin somewhere.

2) only the rectangle housing is left, now there's 2 ways to this:

A. The way original poster did. He did the same thing on the new part, and then insert the new claw/spring assembly back into the empty housing in the console. Be careful of the little lever, and don't bend the spring while pushing it back in. I tried this method and it didn't work for me, it still wouldn't latch as mine had issues with the housing itself.

B. My way since 2a didn't work for me. use the needle nose and tug on the left and right sides (*that's where the clips are), it you can get a flat head to help with leverage from the wide while using the needle nose to pull down, it would help. All it takes is one side to become loose, and the housing can be pull out with ease. At this time, note the orientation of the housing, I believe the "zig zag" slot faces the windshield. Take your new part, ensure orientation is correct, and simply push it up the slot.

Problem solved.
