Hey guys,

It's been a long time, i still have my old a4 b6 but this year bought a lovely a6 c7 quattro avant.

Long story short, a slow puncture had me at the shop and he noticed the tyres aren't what is listed on tech sheet ( i'm in Spain) current tyres are 225/55/18. Sheet lists stock 245/45/17 but permitted are 225/50/17 or 18.

Sooooo the question! Two tyres need changing, front ones, i don't known if to change to new ones the same as currently on or get them all changed and maybe go down to 50/17.

Cost saving is a concern at the moment in the current climate but if this is a problem will change them all.

Thankyou

I

Need to make a correction, current tyres are 17s not 18s

Match the tires or replace all 4. The Quattro system will get broke if you don’t

Thanks, yeah i had read the quattro needs all to be the same. Do you think current ones are ok? Even though slightly off spec?

As long as the load index on the tyres is adequate, I see no problems with going which ever you like. Of course I have no idea of the Spanish laws and inspection requirements so that you’ll need to figure out.

Edit: and use a square setup because quattro.

Without knowing what engine you have, these are most of the 17" & 18" EU A6 options.

225/55/17 101T on 8x17 ET39 (So your current size is correct.)
225/55/17 97H on 7.5x17 ET37 (Winter setup)

245/45/18 100Y on 8x18 ET39
225/50/18 99H on 7.5x18 ET37 (Alternate winter setup)

So am not sure where their "sheet" got 245/45/17 unless it was supposed to say 18"? Otherwise the 17" would have a much smaller overall diameter than stock.
Based on this statement "permitted are 225/50/17 or 18." it is likely they do not know what they are doing and you might be served better going somewhere else since those two options would differ in diameter by 4% and should in no way be considered as interchangeable with one another.

Agree. If your car came with an owner's manual, you could check that for tire sizes. Assuming you have the A6 with 3.0 liter 6 cylinder engine, my US manual for 2014 also lists 225/55/17 97H as gk1 notes, the only difference being that the manual states these are "all season" tires, not just for winter.

if money is a consideration then why replace all 4 if not necessary? Just make sure they match. I dont think tire sizes change per country. Use what it came with.

How much tread is on the 2 on the back? If the backs have say 7/32, or more, then get new fronts in the same size. If 5/32 then get 4 new tires.

I want to say the Quattro can handle a difference of up to 4/32nds in tread difference XO depth assuming the same size/diameter

Considering he is in Spain the tread depth measurement is in mm and not freedom units
