I was finally able to address the so called "crack" in my catalytic converter that I noticed about 2 months ago. Well, started disassembling everything and I find out that the damn thing was completely cracked in half!![eek]

I removed the cat and downpipe from the car and inspected the inside of it. To my surprise I find that the cat is gutted!!! That would explain why my Neuspeed exhaust is so loud. I am going to have the cat welded back together.

On a side note for those in Illinois, The car just passed emissions a couple of months ago so I guess the gutted cat (or maybe even a test pipe) will pass. [up]

Do you guys think I should replace the O2 sensors? They wouldn't budge so that was why I just disconnected the harnesses. Here's some pics:

The white stuff is muffler repair goo:

i guess you can get rid of that WANTED sign at the bottom of your sig then[:D] . seriously though that sux, happens WAY too many times to most people. Just weld that sucker and you'll be on your way.

You know, I was thinking the same thing when I removed it from the engine. I agree that it looked smaller than other cats I've seen. I'm the third owner of the vehicle and I know the owner before me didn't change it. I've been finding little things like this as I go along...

Just saw this John. I guess I never really took a look at your cat cuz that's definately not a stock cat.

take this advice. Just buy a new one, dont bother welding it. A tantrum cat i believe is in the 200 dollar price range. Since you have it out might as well replace with a new fresh unit.

being a man usually means going a little farther to take responsibility for your actions. test pipe is the cheap and easy way. HFC is the responsible play. you also avoid CEL, unnecessary pollution, and the rotten egg smell.

CATS are studied to possibly cause more damange to the o-zone , but yea..

Looks like someone made that. Looks like they wanted a test pipe, but didnt want someone to be able to tell visually.

You would think with as much as we've been working on this car one of us would have noticed it.[:p]

I have to at least try welding it to see if it works. As I mentioned earlier, my A4 passed emissions with this cat on it so it seems to work fine. I was planning on selling my Neuspeed exhaust to r12055ma4play because it is too loud for me. Now I'm wondering if is because of the gutted cat and not the exhaust.

No, it didn't throw any CELs. I did look at the 02 sensors and they appeared to be "shimmed". Are there supposed to be 2 thin washers? If not, this would probably explain why it hasn't thrown a CEL (less air flow exposure to the 02 sensor I'm guessing).

try to salvage the 02 sensors if they aren't bad. I replaced my front one and it was like $1XX if a recall. Not cheap

I hear ya. Actually, I found them at Shokan.com for just over $50 each. They don't come with the harnesses but I can just splice the original ones onto it. Beats paying $100+ each.

not really on topic but when i saw the title i was expecting to see fluffy imbeded into an fmic... i guess i'm just demented. isn't it great to find performance upgrades you never knew you had?
