Curious I rear ended someone cause they cut me off. Does anybody else use the emergency braking safety system or do you guys usually have it off?

Well, next time, control your anger and don't rear end them. Jk. How bad was the damage? Unfortunately, they mostly side with the person that got rear ended, unless you got some really damning dashcam videos

I don't think the Audi Braking Guard feature works quickly enough to save you in an abrupt rear-end scenario.

I mean, that's almost like asking if a person uses ABS or airbags? They're there and on, but you don't really intend to actually use them. I have it on in my car, and over however many years of ownership, I think I've had two activations of the braking guard and it was appropriate for the situations. That said, it's not like it's prevented an accident IMO, both times it kicked on in the split second as I was moving to apply the brake.

Sorry to hear that, hopefully you're ok. Not sure there's a way to turn off ACC, at least not one that's easily accessible like radar cruise control or lane keep assist.

Fortunately I've never had ACC had to intervene but it has come close with the flashing red warnings of imminent collision (in its mind anyway).

I don't think there is any way to turn it off. I have had it activate twice with no-one in front of me which could have caused someone to rear end me. The only other times it has activated is when someone jams on the brakes to turn into a drive way and I'm already moving my foot over to the brake anyway.

I think you'll need dash cam evidence if you think this was one of those swoop and squat scams.

When you turn traction control off doesn’t it also say braking guard off?
Is that the same thing as what your asking...the OP that is.

If someone slams on brakes in front of you and you are following far enough directly behind it might help, but if someone cuts you off and slams on the brakes it does not help much if at all. Same thing happened to me.

Cars can be replaced. Hopefully you and everyone in the other car are okay.

My take on the brake guard system is that as others have said it is a helper but not something to rely on. In your situation where you were cut off it would likely have helped but not prevented the collision. My fear with this type of technology is the guy behind me does not have it and I stop and he does not.

So how did the police report rule the collision? Other guy at fault for cutting you off?

You can definitely can turn both off. Brake guard through the MMI (under driver assist) and acc isn’t on unless you activate it to begin with like cruise control

The policeman ruled it as him cutting me off, I’m not sure how it’ll play out. I could win my insurance lady told me. Also even if I am found at fault it is what it is.. I was more just curious about if I had it on would it have sensed it and saved me am just fine thank you everybody. In regards to the car I’m gonna find out if it’s totaled or not today sometime. I’m almost positive it is. Really wondering what my next car is gonna be already.

Good car! Allowed you to walk away from a bad impact. Costco has new Audi on sale through 30 September. A chance to get an even better paint color!

It will be totaled, my s7 didn't have near that damage from a chick running a red light and braking guard didn't help one bit.

Dash Cam people! Please get a dash cam.

We lost our 535i to a lady running a red light and t boning my wife. She claims my wife ran the red (even though she hit is in the left rear quarter panel). We claim she ran the red. Insurances did bother fighting and gave it a 50/50 at fault. Cops wouldnt even write a report even though they said it 'seemed' she hit us they claimed with no wittnesses it is not going to help our case..... Not sure about that but hey.

A dash cam would have saved us showing the light turning green. I now have dash cams in all our cars just in case.

Happy ending though - 535i was totalled so we got our much nicer Audi A6!!!! yay!!!!

Reminds me of the conversation around electronics on sport bikes and "uncrashable" bikes. Accidents happen, but plenty of riders have proven that it doesn't matter how many safety nets there are if the operator is properly motivated [>_<]

Sucks about the car, hopefully you get into something as good or better.

looking for clarification: do you guys deliberately turn off safety features on the car? Someone said upthread that if you turn off the TC it turns off the brake assist, so just wondering.

I Only turn that stuff off when doing a launch. No other reason for me.

Sorry for you, time to get into an RS7!

Nevertheless I can only recommend getting a dashcam... after the 4th time with people hitting our parked cars I got one. Just make sure you get one that complies with local laws, here in Germany it’s only legal to use dashcams which saves video in a crash-event. If you save all the time you get a hefty fine!!

That's very odd about saving videos. What's the legal reason for that nonsense? So all the security videos on buildings and ATMs are illegally recording security vids?

It’s all due to data privacy laws since you are technically recording strangers walking by the car or other vehicles when you drive.

Even if you have evidence, if the dashcam which recorded it is legal, the evidence will be ruled inadmissive. It had to go all the way to the Supreme Court before it was set in stone.

Wow, that's what I figured was going on but that's still ridiculous. Do people have privacy when walking out on pubic roads or driving?

there is no expectation/guaranty of privacy when out in public areas.

lucky for us in USA they use it. I have a buddy who is a cop and they can even use gas station cameras to help see who is at fault

One of my friends had his car hit in the side by a garbage truck. He had survelliance of the csr which reached a little out of the road.

He went to the police with it but they gave him a 500€ fine and got no help with the claim against the garbage company. That’s germany. :) the european GDPR law is heavily based on the german DSGVO (DatenSchutzGrundVerOrdnung) - try to say that out loud :D
