Also, with dual pulley and especially if you plan to do a TCU reflash to raise the rev limit and shift points you should prioritize test pipes or aftermarket high flow cat pipes versus downpipes with an exhaust system.

What’s the benefit of prioritizing the test/racing pipes/high flow cat pipes vs. the downpipes and exhaust? And can you link to some or do you know of a site that sells them?
This will be my daily driver so I want to avoid any exhaust drone.
I looked into the Resonated Downpipe/AWE touring combo and it seems to be the perfect happy medium between sweet exhaust noise and still being able to drive around town without being the rooster that crows in the mornings and not getting any cabin drone during highway/freeway driving, etc.
What are your thoughts?

The CREC 3.0T uses a 4-bolt pulley and not a pressed on pulley like the first gen 3.0T.
Dual pulley with high revs will kill the factory cats super quick due to EGTs. With stock downpipe and exhaust you may experience rasp but should b3 good with flow. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think safe limits for factory cats is single pulley.

So with dual pulley if I go aftermarket cat, aftermarket downpipe, aftermarket exhaust - I should be good?
And yeah, I see that now about the pulley. Thanks for clarifying, I really appreciate it.
So weird that Unitronic has the same issue on Moddedeuros where it says the non-bolt on drive pulley fits.

Test pipes AND HFC? Don’t you mean OR?
My understanding was that the HFC or test/race pipe upgrades the same part of the exhaust system and you have one or the other. Is that incorrect?
Also for HX I was thinking of going with APRs CPS (coolant performance system).
You were referring to heat exchanger, right?
If I’m completely missing the ball on both accounts please enlighten me.

Haha, thanks man.
Really nice to have people on this forum that have learned quite a bit and pass the knowledge onto others in an easily digestible manner.
Only other thing is the case of him saying test pipe and high flow cat - they’re one and the same but two different solutions to the same problem, right?
Thanks, Spender.

Integrated Engineering is supposed to be releasing tunes for the CREC motors soon.
Double check if APR is still offering ultracharger tunes because they are slated to stop selling stage 2 tunes (high flow downpipe) for the 2.0T cars as of labor day weekend. Supposedly this decision was made due to the EPA crackdowns on emissions.

APR is part of the Holley family of brands and so is Flowmaster: https://www.holley.com/brands/
News Releases from Region 09, U.S. EPA settles with three California auto parts companies over Clean Air Act violations.
Nearly one million in penalties paid 03/07/2019
"Flowmaster, Inc. sold 446 aftermarket exhaust system parts for motor vehicles that enabled the removal of catalytic converters on light-duty gasoline vehicles. The Nevada company, headquartered in Santa Rosa, Calif., will pay a $270,000 penalty."
Flowmaster, Inc. Consent Agreement and Final Order (PDF)
From APR:
There is no change / nothing discontinued for the 3.0T Supercharged platform.
4.0T
Downpipes and “Stage 2” downpipe software are discontinued on all platforms, excluding the 3.0T as stage 2 terminology is different. We will still provide support for existing customers. Stage 2 can still be flashed if you already have it, and we’ll extend new purchases up to Labor Day. Also, if you have a downpipe with an unused auth code, you can still get the stage 2 software after this date. If we have a tech support issue and update that applies to stage 2, we’ll still support you. If you have a hardware issue, we’ll still accommodate you.
I’m sorry for this inconvenience. Thank you.
There were no technical problems with the software or hardware. This change applies to ALL platforms, and all Downpipes, and all Stage 2 software (except where stage 2 means something else). We will continue to provide support for our products, whether sold or not.
This is the way it is for every stage 2 file, sans 3.0T supercharged. Come the 7th, you can't buy it.

Watchmespend,
I read that, technically, downpipes aren’t required for stage 2 on the 3.0T. They’re only required for stage 2 on the 4.0T.
Do you know if there is any validity to this?

You are gonna buy an A6 and then drop $5,000 in parts. Why not start from the S6/7 platform instead. I think an S with an APR stage 1 tune will be pushing 550 hp. Get the turbo oil strainer updated and go from there.

Agreed. But I’d probably do DS1 instead of APR since you can flash back to stock and its cheaper.

I got scared off from the S6s because of the talk of turbo failure and I’d be buying out of warranty.
Can you explain to me like I’m five what exactly I need to do to ensure turbo failure won’t be an issue with the 4.0T? And even then, is the engine as “bulletproof” as the 3.0T?
Reliability is a major factor, for me.

The 4T is actually an awesome platform. SOME folks have had issues with turbos blowing (at an unacceptably high rate, statistically). You can avoid this by doing a few things-
1)remove or replace the turbo oil screen- the labor is painful, but definitely worth it. There are DIYs on here that are pure gold.
2) REplace the OEM S6 turbo with pretty much any iteration of a billet wheel turbo (OEM RS7, SRM, TS, etc).
3) Oil changes every 5k miles.
4) Some folks have motor mount issues a few years in.
5) Others have had their thermostats go a few years in.
6) Still others have had no issues at all.
Because of the scare, you can get late model year, low mileage cars at a huge markdown.

Initially when shopping the C7.5 platform I was in the market for an "S" car. I too was scared of blown turbos on the 4.0TT and ended up going the direction of the 3.0T. I believe the DSG on the 4.0TT is decently reliable (in the S6/S7 I think its the DL511 versus the B8/B8.5 DL501) however, I trust the ZF 8 speed over the DSG versions for reliable long term service.
If you were to change direction and get a 4.0TT car I would ensure it has the revised oil screen kit installed or prioritize that installation. Do the oil changes at 5k as a max frequency (personally, my oil gets changed every 3k to 4k on all the cars, even DSG fluid, haldex and plugs were changed ahead of schedule on the S3).
In addition and as an fyi, if you guys are "flashing back to stock" to avoid TD1 it can still be flagged because the flash counter increments and this is how the dealer can tell that the tune was tampered with.

Oly has a great list but I will be honest and say I am torn on the 5K OCI. Synthetic oil will last at least 15K miles so even the Audi 10K interval is conservative. From the Blackstone lab reports that have been shared on the 4.0 platform they have all said the oil will last past the Audi 10K OCI. It seems that the only main place that sludge develops and gets trapped is at that damned screen. Its a shame that these magnificent engines were developed with an Achilles Heel.
There have been cars on here that still get blown turbos with a 5K OCI. They key seems to be with updating the screen or making the switch to the JHM oil strainer relocation kit.
You are not right with the 5K OCI but at the same time you are not wrong either. All depends on the amount of risk you want to take on.
I have read about 2 failure modes on the turbo's now. Mode 1 is the screen plugging off and starving the turbo's of oil. Mode 2 is over spin with tuned engines and the turbo impeller flying apart. The fix for over spin is either don't tune it or get the billet units on Olys list.
My last car was a GM platform with a 4 cyl turbo so it was a high revving engine that I beat the shit out of driving 30 - 40K miles a year highway at 80+ MPH turning well over 3,000 RPMs. That car used a semi synthetic oil and a 7-8K OCI. When I traded the car at 190,000+ miles it still had the original turbo. I don't think you can EVER get that out of a VW/Audi turbo.

Some won't go this route because os the rasp, but no matter what you will have rasp

I'm not as knowledgeable as others on the topic but I've read that the issue is attributed to the screens becoming cloggee. When the screens clog the turbo is starved of oil. Also, extended oil changes can most likely lead to failures with the oil passage ways building up sludge. Sludge then reduces the volume of oil entering the turbochargers.
