I did timing chain replacement today just as preventative maintenance

Here are my findings and I would like to know why adjuster rubs onto timing cover. And also adjuster rings rubed adjuster near the bolt

tensioner, chain is still in excellent shape with minimal wear on plastic guides. Even the screen on the tensioner was so clean but it was stuck to the head when I removed it.

timing cover and cam adjuster has some burrs. Not sure why they rubbed against each other lol.

Replaced adjuster rings because why not?

Adjuster bolt sure took 3 asian hands.

Even the schaben camlocking tool couldnt lock 100% and the cam moved about 1-2 cm during my attempt to remove it.

I forgot to bring Vicegrips(we have to move intake cam a tad bit anticlockwise to slip the adjuster into exhaust cam) to the place where I was working and ended up wasting time.

Congrats on getting that bolt off. It can be a real challenge.
Do you have pics of the rubbing areas you mentioned ? Nothing should rub but I wonder if some foreign object was rubbing.
Having to move the intake cam to get the chain in the right spot is perfectly normal. Thats why ut has a slot in the end so you can put a tool on and rotate it.
I hope you replaced chain tensioner and cam bolt anyway.
Have you got it back together and started yet ?

Everything is replaced with new parts OEM parts Chain, tensioner, gaskets, orings for vaccum pump and HPFP, follower.

I knew about the slot but my pry bar was too thick to fit in and channel locks were slipping on the cam. I had to run to harbor freight to get a bunch of vice grips.

Scratches werent that bad and when I scrolled finger on it, I didn't tell. I only noticed while cleaning the cover and same goes to adjuster. If you see the pics attached if barely noticeable. Could be old busted follower from previous owner. Cam has wear but very minimal and not noticable unless I look Very closely

Pic for adjuster ( terrible quality because of frustration and wanted to get everything back quickly. Not sure why but my hand was shaking when I leaning and working

Adjuster has very few scrapers on the edge and not noticable in the pics.

All in all it took about 5 hours to do it along with some summer burns.

If you zoom on this picture below, you will notice some scrapes on the adjuster

You almost want to think there may have been pieces of a cam follower caught up in there . The gouged area in the timing cover looks recessed. May mean something jammed in there
If you still.have access to tbe scraps. See if a magnet will.pick them up. If so I'm thinking its pieces of old follower.
Have you ever had a punched follower ?

Its a bit of a nerve wracking job if its your first time for sure but well done.
If there are no codes you are golden...

Is it quieter ??

Never, I usually replace it every 20k. Old owner might have had one. Cam looks to be replaced at some point( not sure, I made that assumption because the cam looked like the HPFP lobe pressed it. As per my knowledge, old cams had a HPFP lobe like every other lobe without any seems at the place where it meets the cam).

Cleaned the head and oil galleries(used a pick) before assembing back everything. Very very small shiny metal from old follower may be at the walls of the cover and 1 partly broken control ring.

Either way sounds like you might be okay.
The only concerning part is the tiny fragments of metal.you would have thought were gone long ago. But they looked fairly fresh.
I wonder if its piece of one of the vvt oil rings ? You mentioned a broken one
Nothing you can do anyway but drive it.

Maybe send a sample of oil to Blackstone. ?
Or a more frequent oil change for next little bit.

More like very fine shiny glitter at an area of the cover where oil doesn't reach often(very small amount it barely showed up on my finger). Good thing to know is cam lobes and rockers look clean and almost new upon inspection. I am certain that it could be very old worn follower. Previous oil filter might have caught all the glitter. This car never had any problems and not even much of oil burning issues. It burns about 1 quart every 4000k miles and currently at 164k.

Adjuster rings that came off seemed to be made of carbon compound. New ones were black in color too. My new rings pack from VW dealership had 4 rings instead of 3 but the cover only had 3 in it all of same size. I compared the size of new orings and old, both looked same. Did I get 4th one in the pack by mistake?

yup as there is only three....

its worth a few bucks to anyone who breaks one so hang on to it

found this on the ground where I worked on the car. I think it might be from old HPFP tip when someone else owned this car. Wondering how it didn't manage to create carnage and sitting alone in some corner all these years
