Ive got a 2008 A4 2.0T with the TIP trans and have recently started hearing a rattling noise from the engine. It is most audible through the wheel well and seems to be coming from the lower rear of the motor. I know the most common suggestion would be to check the cam chain and tensioner but those were both replaced about 1k miles ago. The noise only occurs when the motor oil is at operating temp and the engine is at idle. Could it possibly be an oil pump chain noise? I have not had any issues with oil pressure or sludge. No CELs or any kind of difference in driveability. Any insight or suggestions would be appreciated. Not sure if it helps but the car has about 125,000 miles and is engine code BWT.

Belt tensioner, engine mounts may be. These are already due at your mileage just replace them and see if it helps

It certainly could be an oil pump chain noise if your description is accurate as to where it is coming from. Thats a big if.
I dont know about autos but could it not also be the torque converter rattling.
Did you check the fitting coming out of the vacuum pump to the brake booster ?.although that sound is much higher.
Its just a lot of work to go after that pump if you're wrong, but disasterous when you are right and ignore it.
Tough call
If you have access to one i would check your oil pressure at idle with a gauge.
Car does not monitor at idle but a gauge might tell you something..
There is a thread on this forum on checking oil pressure and what good looks like.
I wrote it and a lot of great people contributed to it.
I just dont remember what its called.

Alright, i will take a look at that thread. I've been trying to find as much info as possible regarding the oil pump and chain in these cars but it does not appear to be a very commonly discussed issue. Dropping the pan doesn't seem overly hard but from what I've found the chain is a PITA. I have read that early model B7's were more prone to oil pump issues, which gives me hope as mine is a late model. I'll try to capture a video of the noise to see if others have had similar noises

Yeah i would do as much troubleshooting as possible before swapping parts. That oil pump sprocket has definitely been an issue for some.

I had a buddy put the car in drive while holding the brake and the noise actually seems to go away. Makes me wonder about what you said about the torque converter. I’ll post a video later tonight, can’t do it on my phone.
