So, over the summer I got a steal on a Quattro 1.8t A4 at auction ($350 total), I then proceeded to jump it and punched a hole in the oil pan lol. Last week I got the oil pan changed (since my B5 S4 broke haha) and there were no metal flakes or anything in the oil. Since replacing the pan both the oil temp and coolant temp gauges never mover, although they were very wonky in the summer too. If I’m wot hauling butt up a mountain then both move up a little bit, At most 1/4 up the coolant gauge and 160 on the oil temp gauge. I just flushed the coolant, I’ve put water through it at least 7 times now and it’s still cruddy and dark brown. After each time warming up the car there is a thick white, sometimes chunky, foam in the coolant tank. After letting the car warm up with water instead of coolant, I drove it around my neighborhood, a total of 1.5-2miles, when I got back all of the coolant lines were warm but definitely not hot. Later I drove around with just water for maybe 25-30mins and twisted the cap of the coolant reservoir directly when getting home (very very bad idea) and there was no steam at all. The oil isn’t soupy, the oil cap doesn’t smell like coolant, the exhaust doesn’t smoke, and the HVAC gets warm but not hot. Any ideas? It definitely has cruddy coolant lines but I’m thinking of one of the following might be bad, the thermostat, oil/coolant heat exchanger, maybe the head gasket, or the gauges/sensors are just broke. Has Castrol GTX 5w30 oil and the outside temperatures have been 30-40degrees.

If the oil level is not dropping, then it's a bad thermostat and nasty coolant. If the oil level is dropping, the oil cooler is bad as well as the thermostat. I used a garden hose to flush out the nasty brown coolant when I bought my V6 15 years ago and it was good for 10 years until I pulled the motor for the 1.8T swap.
