View Full Version : Simple upgrades for Bose ?

A POS Tiguan has better bass response than the Bose in my 2016 A6.

Are there simple upgrades that are NOT overly complicated?
New amp and Sub?

Don’t want earth shaking, around the block pounding bass, just quality response and imaging in the music.

I’m not up for doing the work myself and need to find someone in Philly who’ll be knowledgeable or who can do what i ask depending on what you guys recommend.

Edit: I’ve searched and results get way too complicated and detailed for what I’m looking for, I just need the clif’s notes version!

No highs,
No lows...
MUST be Bose!

I am very unhappy with my Blowes system too.
Hopefully, someone can chime in with suggestions.

Add a amp ans sub. Done

You could add power to existing Bose speaker by adding a LOC/amp combo. That’s quick and easy. But the impact is modest.

Also quick and easy would be a LOC and powered sub sitting in the trunk. JL has a few options. But, you’d give up trunk space.

Another option, if you have plenty of time, skill, or cash to burn, would be to do custom sub box, whether in trunk or hanging from deck.

I added a 10" JL Audio sub to my Bose system... big difference. I personally don't have an issue with the system, even after being a big audio head always running JL Audio speakers and amps. The sound is typically very clean, can it be louder? sure. But I dont have an issue with it, I just needed more bass.

Funny enough, I actually love the bose in my C7. Has great bass for my catalogue of music. Ive heard the B&O in S8, and my buddies F10 M5, and wasn’t impressed.

Your best bet, is to just wire a sub to the factory system.

Do you guys REPLACE the sub? Or just add one in a box?

Is it easy for someone to wire in a new amp?

Sorry, what is a LOC?

I’m ok with modest impact, but would certainly upgrade the sub in the rear deck if I can mount something new in its place.
I’d like to stay as close to stock as possible so as to minimize trunk space lost.

Correct. I used the Audio Control ACM 1.300. It’s a LOC and an amplifier. So, in my case, I reduced the number of components I installed. Other use a simple LOC with really good amps... many options are available!

So an amp with a 10 inch sub in trunk improves the sound a bit?

It improves the bass, yes. I'd say more than a bit, honestly, the factory sub leaves much to be desired in my opinion.

Coming from my 2013 S4 with B&O with an added sub/amp to the Bose in my 2018 S6, I was a bit disappointed. The B&O was more accurate and crisp but it also lacked the bass. I installed the same sub/amp in my S6 but had a terrible time tuning it as the Bose adds a ton of bass at low volume and bleeds it as the volume increases. I went with the Audio Control LC2i line out converter, this converter is an active setup that allows some processing via the accubass feature. This feature helps smooth out the bass and helps with tuning. The end result is a much better and fuller sounding system.

I should also add that if you choose to add a sub in the trunk, be sure to remove the factory Bose sub that's in the rear deck. The sound with it removed is much cleaner, leaving it in place makes it act like a passive radiator. Unfortunately it's passive radiator function hinders the sound vs. helping. I experimented with leaving it in place with both my S4 and S6 and the sound was considerably better in both cars with it removed.

Agreed on all points made. New sub with amp improved bass tremendously. Removal of Bose sub that would otherwise be (1) a passive unit or (2) powered secondary is the right move. I experimented with both options, and also concluded it’s useless if not counterproductive. Finally, mounting a sub in place of Bose unit is possible, but real chore and it can give rise to rattles/buzzes. So, if you choose that path DO IT RIGHT with plenty of reenforcement, sound dampening, etc..

If just big bass boom will do, then that easy solution is ok, wire in a sub and amp, remove old sub and there is no need to read below.

This only applyes for an audiphile looking for clear and defined sound:
If you are also looking for better imaging, the easy solution as in just add a 10" sub and amp, will not do, the Bose system has way too much bass roll off, so you end up reseting the bass gain all the time. Also time aligment is messed up badly, so the bass sounds out of sinc.

In order to correct this, there is no other way than to get rid of the Bose amp or may be add a signal summing processor in order to restore bass singnal. Neither are simple or cheap, but really worth it I.M.H.O.

Any recommendations on a different amp? As in, what power, how many channels....
I need a professional consultation I guess...

There are many amps, and routes to take, you can either take it as a hobbie, put some time into it and decide by yourself what to use, or have a proffesional do it all for you. Just do not let them use a signal summing device like a JL Audio Fix-86, or similar, the signal will never be as good as removing the Bose Amp by using a Nav TV Zen V or similar.

This is what I did: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/834417-S6-with-Bose-Audio-Upgrade-lessons-I-learned , after all I learned slowly how difficult the Bose to work with.

There are many other threads here with very helpfull and bright ideas, just search for suberFUSE and OlyS6 posts on custom audio. Check this out on Speakers: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/677376-C7-A6-Bose-system-Speakers-sizes
