So i changed my oil for the first time today, pretty easy, however i had a major lack in judgement at the end.

Instead of filling up with 4.6L then running the engine and checking the level, i kept adding oil then checking the dipstick. The level was about 0.5cm below max, so i went and turned the engine on. Instead of looking for any warning lights, i went and inspected for leaks. The engine sounded like something wasn't right so i went and shut it off. Checked the level and it was on minimum, perhaps below minimum / not even registering on the dipstick. I did pour a good amount of oil into the filter before putting it in.

I can't remember exactly how much oil i had put in however i'd say worst case scenario i ran the engine with 2 litres less of oil than what there should have been for 20 seconds.

As for the sound... Well when i first got the car i thought the engine was buggered and took it to a mechanic who informed me that it was the injectors ticking away and it sounded fine. So i know it has a loud ticking as standard. Now i'm not sure if it's in my mind or not but the ticking sounds a lot louder and possibly some other odd sounds but my hearing isn't the best and i have a tendency to overthink things.

My question is, what are the chances that i have caused serious damage from what i did?

Hopefully i am just being paranoid. I'll get a video up of the sound tomorrow if that helps.

edit - also to add, i've driven it about 20 miles since, everything feels normal and no warning lights. Sadly i have no vagcom to check for codes.

Should be fine. I've seen people run the 1.8T with no oil (drain plug pulled) just to pump out the extra oil. You would think it would be an issue, but it's going on at least 10 years of ownership with no problems.

No, but don't do it again! Seriously, with 3 quarts still in her I'm sure it was still pumping oil (unless you had the car upside down - not recommended).

Mine probably ran for almost that long when my timing cover backed off an I lost 3 quarts. No apparent damage for me, so you’re likely ok. Just try not to make it a common occurrence.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm feeling a bit better about it now, hopefully nothing is damaged. Certainly learnt from my mistake and won't be making it again.

I am still slightly worried about the engine noise, maybe it's something else maybe it's nothing.. If anyone could have a listen and tell me what they think it would be much appreciated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7smtKQE559M

Can't seem to get the video to embed for some reason.

Edit - Not sure if it changes the engine noise or not but i switched from 5w30 to 0w40.

Sounds like pretty normal B7 2.0T noises.

I would expect the sound it makes could change slightly with a different weight oil, heck even different brands of the same weight oil.

That's reassuring to know, feel better now, thank you!
