View Full Version : Ash Tray Delete with Wireless Charging - Now for LARGE phones!

Hey folks, sorry for the long wait. My 3D printer broke down and life got busy, so I had to set this project down for awhile. I'm happy to say that the fit for this model is excellent, and the finish on the product from shape ways is shockingly good. This is the basic versatile plastic material. Apparently the 3D printer they make these on costs a half a million dollars, give or take.

With this change, we have 160mm x 86mm x 15mm to work with. This should fit pretty much any modern phone inside a case.

The model is available for purchase HERE (https://www.shapeways.com/product/DN4ACCZNZ/audi-b8-ashtray-delete-for-larger-phones-wireless)

The original guide for installation and setup can be found HERE (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/847410-Ash-Tray-Delete-with-FAST-Wireless-Charging-FULL-GUIDE-Now-available-for-purchase)

You can do it! Seriously though, the whole process is easier than it looks. I've done the install a bunch of times now, but the whole thing can probably be done in 30 minutes without prior experience. If you have any specific questions that might help you get comfortable, let me know!

There are some very minor tweaks. What I was really talking about was the expansion area. That took a few iterations to get a clean fit.

Will this fit a B8.5?

Yes! My car is a B8.5 actually.

Any pics of this installed?

Just added one. Doesn't look so good at night with a flash. I'll add a better picture with natural light tomorrow.

Do you think the premium is worth the price difference over natural? The end product looks pretty damn OEM.

Thanks for the compliment! My guess is no, but I've never seen the premium finish in person. Shapeways shows some comparisons HERE (https://www.shapeways.com/blog/archives/35929-questions-answered-premium-strong-flexible-nylon-plastic.html). It will probably match the stock trim better than the natural version, but hitting the natural with some plastidip or some paint is probably your best bet if you really want it to match. I remember reading on here that someone found a paint that matches the black of the trim perfectly, but I don't have a link handy.

Nice product for sure. Is the pic from an A4?

2016 S4. To my understanding, it should fit any B8/B8.5 A4/S4. I also suspect it will fit the same generation S5s, but not sure about that.

I do actually have two "failed" iterations with minor defects that I'd be happy to ship for free to someone willing to test fit in a different model car that may have the same ash tray part. An S5, or any non A4/S4 that uses the same assembly. One of the prints is a bit too tight of a fit, so I had to shave some material off. I did use it in my car for a week with no major problems though. The other one has a ~1mm gap between the top of the box part and the bottom of the climate control assembly. Hit me up if you're interested in either of those.

Anyone with an S5 want a "seconds" unit for free to test fitment? Or any other car that seems to have the same ash tray assembly other than an b8/8.5 a4/s4?

Unfortunately no, the cover is quite large and also part of the stock ashtray assembly. There's no way that would work without lots of cutting and modification. Even at that point, I'm not sure it would be possible.

Bummer, I really like the one I used. I suspect turnover on specific models of those things will be high.

At a glance, here are a couple of amazon links for stuff that looks like it would work well (high friction anti stick, reduced contact surface area)

Just a heads up - I did this mod/install and it works great, really clean look/install.

I did do the "cheaper" option from shapeways and not the premium finish as I felt it was going to be covered up by the anti slip mat anyways.

It's worth noting that you will be snipping the connector from your OEM cig lighter!

Double checked the dimensions listed in the OP, and it should fit a 10/11 max, even in a case. If your case is bulky, you may be pushing it though.

No idea, but I suspect it would. I believe the S5 uses the same ashtray assembly, and it looks semetrical so I'd assume the part is the same RHD. No way to be sure though. I sent a test print out to a guy on here with an S5 to test the fit and he ghosted me :(

Thanks! Unfortunately the cup holders probably aren't feasible for 3d printing. The amount of material is much greater, so the cost would be enormous. The other issue is that I'd need to have my entire center console out for many days prototyping fitment, which isn't practical.

Man it would be nice to fit something other than a redbull though :D

It's actually quite easy. You only need to remove the climate panel (easy with pry tools) and the panel surrounding the shifter (no tools required). Then you have access to remove the ash tray assembly and replace it. There is a link to the guide in the original post. This can be done in about 5 minutes with experience, and probably about 20 for a first time. The hardest part is the wiring, which is also not hard.

I finished my install over the weekend, it's a little finicky with my iPhone 11, I have to have the phone centered for it to work (maybe if I had the MAX it wouldn't be an issue). I also tried the Anker wireless charger first but it ended being slightly too big and ended up going with the Chotech. I also used T-taps for the power / ground and didn't cut the harness off, would be very easy to put the ashtray back in if I wanted.

That's a bummer. I've had pretty good luck with the charger, but I'm sure it depends on the phone. One thing I did that might help is I bought some adhesive backed craft foam and put it onto the back wall of the tray. You can do that all around the edge to reduce the overall size of the tray and help force the phone into a viable charging position.

This modification is great for those whose cell-phone batteries are awful, can't hold their battery life for longer than a few hours, and require to be charged often...but was there any mention as far as the maximum thickness a bulky cell-phone case has to be for the wireless charging capability to be able to penetrate said case?

I know the dimensions of the case are one thing - but if you have an OtterBox or full-body, rugged, heavy-duty case that a lot of construction and laborers use, what then? Is this wireless charger's "strength" potent enough to penetrate such case(s)?

I'd love to hear anyone who has a case along those lines to chime in, if applicable.

Please & thank you!

Are there any plans to make the model available like you initially stated? I'd rather have this done on the resin printers I have available to me and getting the model manipulated to better handle the wireless strategy I have setup would be ideal. I don't mind paying a fee to license it for a single personal print if you'd like me to contact you directly.

Looks like this may be too small to fit an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Can anyone confirm? Based on dimensions it may just barely clear without a case but almost certainly won’t fit in a case.

blubaru

I have the 12 pro max with a slim case and it fits... barely. It’s not charging however so I will probably have to readjust the coil on the bottom. I thought about buying the new MagSafe charger and some how incorporating that instead but until Apple lets third party companies charge at full speed it’s not worth it. We are capped at 7.5W which is pointless.

If you have a Max size phone I think the tray is too small to be useful. I have a very thin case and it’s difficult to get the phone back out of the tray. My friends phone in a larger case got stuck in it lol. With almost no room to spare it might be tricky to get the mag safe orientation correct for everyone’s phone, since cases are different shape and size. Also if you have a rubber mat on it the magnetic connection may not work or be very weak as well.

I stopped using it for my phone once I got a Max, and the charging was too slow to be useful honestly. I have a PD fast car charger that is plugged into the center armrest that makes more sense to use on short to medium trips. I do like the look of the tray but overall it has been pretty pointless for me.

This looks awesome, but my phone is 165mm tall.

Is there any way to make this bigger or is it maxed out?

After over 2 years of faultless operation I've now upgraded my phone which requires 15w wireless charging. The old choetech wireless pad is 10w and charges my new phone at a slower speed.

So are there any recommendations for a 15w wireless pad that would be compatible with this setup?

I upgraded to an iPhone 15 pro, and was troubleshooting why it wouldn’t charge. I had bought the Apple MagSafe charger and mounted below the tray.
Turns out, the camera bump is so severe on the 14/15 that the phone doesn’t sit flat enough to be in range of the charger [emoji24]

So I’m improvising. Move the charger on top. The Apple MagSafe is 5mm thick, which still leaves a good amount of depth in the tray. I bought some 5mm Eva costume foam for $10 and made a cutout of the charger. There’s just enough gap to run the wire in the side clip. (I previously cut out the corner for the USB plug of my RSNav, that’s the female USB in the picture).
I’m currently painting the foam with black plastidip to match. Will update when complete.
I plan on covering the whole tray with a 1 mm rubber mat. The MagSafe still works through that. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231111/e36fa0b6719280c34ed7d320992c4042.jpg

Update.
No matter what I tried with the silicone mat, I couldn’t get the phone to charge through it (even though I tested this when dry fitting things [emoji37])
So I gave four coats of plastidip and left it “plain”. It’s not terrible, but not what I had in mind. It also actually charges now, so there’s that[emoji12]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231111/d928c983f466401dc3c50bb28d1191ee.jpg

Agreed. This thread got revived just in time for the website to go out of business. I’m totally down if the inventor wanted to sell the design for one print…

Same. I'm really hoping to buy one, or pay a 1 time license fee for the .STL.

He was last online 11/12/2024 - So recently, but not responding to any messages, unfortunately.. :(

I'd really like to get 2 of these, or pay for an STL file.. he should really put the .stl on Etsy or some other site that allows you to sell copies of the file.. For $20.00 or so each download he'd make a pretty decent amount, I think.

I've sent him a private message. If no response, I guess I'll get to designing one myself
