I own/am selling a 2012 A4. I purchased a 2014 S4 (DSG, Sports Diff) about three weeks ago to replace it. I am in VA but purchased the car remotely from a major brand (non-Audi) dealership in TX. Autocheck was clean. When the car arrived, I noticed a gap between the top of the rear bumper cover and the weatherstripping along the trunk sill. The trunk also took a little extra force to close. In addition, the spot welds on the inside of the trunk sill, just above the brake lights seem to be covered by some type of compound (instead of appearing as tight, small, circular dimples). I checked inside the spare tire well, and all the spot welds there seem intact.
I've compared the A4 and S4 side-by-side, and the discrepancies are not subtle.
The car is running very well and handles superbly, so under normal circumstances I would write off the cosmetic concerns. However, today it rained, and when I opened the trunk, water dumped out of the trim lining the inside of the trunk lid. There was no other evidence of water intrusion (i.e., no standing water on the trunk liner, no other wet panels), but clearly water is making it past the weatherstripping and inundating the trim piece.
I'm guessing I just need to take it to a body shop and ask them for an assessment, perhaps? On the rear quarter panels and the trunklid, where are the VIN tags? For that matter, where are the VIN tags on other body parts (doors, etc.)? I think it's time I peeled back this onion.
