View Full Version : RS7: Automatic Upshift

In manual mode I noticed the car will not auto upshift (you'll bang off the rev limiter). I noticed in OBDEleven under transmission and adaptations there's an option to enable automatic upshift. I enabled it and it took (green saying "okay") but yet the car will not auto upshift. Thoughts? Is there a way to do it? I have a C7.5 (2018 RS7 Performance).
It's not supposed to auto upshift in manual mode. That's why it is called manual mode, the non auto upshift feature makes it manual. Leave it in auto mode and it will auto upshift.

AFAIK this is a feature of the RS7.
A stock S6/S7 in manual mode will still auto up-shift at redline. With an aftermarket TCU tune you can disable the auto up-shift so it will bounce off the limiter if you like.

When I got my APR ECU/TCU combo, the installing dealer asked me if I wanted the car to auto up-shift when it hits the limiter (like it does OEM) or let it rev out until I do the shift.. I had never hit the limiter in this car when manually shifting so I didn't even know the car would auto shift on its own.
Since I didn't want any early shifting when in manual mode and I believe manual mode should be just that, I opted to let the software rev out until I make the shift myself...

The option to auto upshift in manual is a feature and should work if set up properly. I’ve set mine to upshift using VCDS. It’s still not intuitive like you’d expect, meaning it doesn’t time the shift properly and still briefly taps the rev limiter before it shifts. It’s certainly better than killing all power though.

Forgot I had mine in manual and took off from a light, it definitely didn't auto up-shift. Got some sweet crackles and pops when I let off the gas though.

Understood. My R8 allows me to bang off limiter <<OR>> auto upshift (depending on drive modes). The fact that the option is in OBDEleven to enable it I'm trying to understand why it won't auto upshift in manual if I enabled it in OBDEleven on the RS7. Is it because my car is a C7.5 and not a C7 and something else needs to be changed elsewhere???

As for never hitting the limiter, try going back and forth from a slushbox automatic RS7 and a DCT R8 and you'll see how much faster the DCT shifts. I have to constantly try and re-teach myself to click the shifter sooner on the RS7. I'll never bang the limter in the R8 I got that down cold. It's very fast to shift whereas the RS7 is slow (in comparison).
What I've done these days in manual if I go full throttle at some point I just quickly slap the shifter back over into auto and let it auto upshift. Then pull it back into the manual cog gate. I'm not road racing an RS7 so the holding of the gear doesn't do me much good on the street in an RS7.
with the apr tune, it hits the rev limiter sooo fast you really have to anticipate the shift point. I did have the option with the s7 apr tune to auto shift in manual and wanted it since a buddy in an s4 blew the engine with the apr tune. Nothing like 24k for new engine.

My RS7 is a C7.5 with an APR tune and I can change the auto upshift with VCDS so maybe there’s a coding error with OBDEleven.

Okay I'll look into it. I've found the C7.5 is a bit more fickle than the C7 for the VCDS/OBDEleven tweaks. Even something like the windows roll up feature it required additional settings beyond the usual.
