View Full Version : Is it OK to coast in neutral(2017 S6)?

I usually put my S6 in neutral going downhill on a mountain pass to maintain speed around 60 mph. If I keep the Stronic engaged it will slow down more than what I wish.
Is this going to cause me an engine/transmission problem?

No you will be fine

Might cause premature wear of your kanooter valve.

Putting unnecessary wear on the kanooter valve aside, I’m wondering if when you put it back in D and your still at speed, does it go to the gear appropriate for that speed or does it go into 1st first.

Might not cause any damage, but in most states it is illegal....including CA.
Although I doubt there is any way to prove it...god forbid you get in an accident and they find out your were in neutral it might add insult to injury.

What mode are you driving in?

Some info from Engineering Explained on YouTube about coasting in neutral.

I’m pretty sure Jason is using a normal torque converter transmission in that video. I’m guessing OP is asking specifically because S-tronic is dual clutch

He is. That's why he's saying don't coast in neutral (one of his reasons anyhow) because that's how torque convertor trannies get cooling.

As you already know, the S6 s-tronic isn't a torque convertor tranny, more accurately it's and auto manual dual clutch transmission. So do not assume the same rules apply.

I would not do it.

From Audi SSP 990193 for 0B5 S Tronic Transmission"

"… towing
If a vehicle with S tronic needs towing, the conventional restrictions of automatic transmissions apply:
– Selector lever in position “N”
– A maximum towing speed of 30 mph (50 km/h) must not be exceeded
– A maximum towing distance of 30 mi (50 km) must not be exceeded

Explanation:
When the engine is at standstill, the oil pump is not driven and certain parts of the transmission are no longer lubricated. Exceeding a speed of 30 mph (50 km/h) results in unacceptably high rotational speeds within the gearbox and dual clutch, because one gear is always engaged in both sub-gearboxes. If these towing cautions are not observed, serious transmission damage can occur."

I still wouldn't do it either, but in the OP's case the engine would be running, and should therefore be running the transmission fluid pump unlike a towing situation.

I will put the 7th gear in Tiptronic mode from now on most coasting scenarios. It should help with the mpg.

If you've added efficiency mode via vcds, it seems to use neutral automatically while coasting downhill
