One thing that came up while I was dealing with this stupid sideswipe accident is the importance of a rider for OEM parts. I knew I signed up for it when I got my policy, but it didn't show up. I provided proof and it was fixed, BUT it brings to light that many of us don't want to use USED parts or aftermarket stuff on our cars in a time of need.

Luckily, there aren't a lot of secondary market options for our cars, BUT when that's not available many insurance carriers push used parts. It's worth checking your policy to make sure if you have strong feelings on this topic.

I don't even see an option to do that with Gieco

You may not have it as an option. Call them and find out what your options are. Some carriers don't have it as an option, which was one of the reasons I went with Liberty Mutual.

I feel like that's a sleezy thing some insurance companies are doing. Insurance is supposed to make you 100% whole again, as if the accident never happened (as much as feasibly possible).

If an insurance company tried to use aftermarket parts, even if they were "better", I'd probably give 'em hell for that. If you wanted to sell your car down the line you often get slightly diminished value for having non-OEM parts.

"Funny" you bring it up: i've just hit a deer with my S5 and when they provided the initial quote, pretty much everything was either refurbished or a non-OEM new part. I was shocked and went off with my agent, but they ended up totaling the car...

now i know better, but most likely will switch insurance company.

They give you a line of sh*t that they inspect all parts and they are exactly the same, blah blah blah, but the reality is, it's a used part. I'm sure for the non-enthusiast side of the market, it doesn't matter. For those of us who frequent car forums, it matters a lot. I'm still super bitter over the whole thing. The car is absolutely tainted in my mind now. I've not decided to keep it or not.... and yes, that's dumb, I understand.

Yeah, while I was at it, I made sure the wife's Pilot and my 997tt were correct for the rider as well. They were both wrong. I don't care if it costs me extra money, I don't want to fight about what I want.

i asked this shop i always take my cars too. they do a damn good job and they always get me OEM parts (and upgraded parts). i asked and they said it is not needed.

i do not know if they are more thorough or how they do this, but i always get all OEM parts.

Yes, if your body shop is good they will fight/convince the adjuster to get OEM parts (if that's what you want)

I'm not sure I would run that risk for $50 a year. 4.25 a month, I can probably skip a starbucks once in the budget :)

do you guys not have a shop you trust that has a good insurance inspector ? iv always had great experience when it comes to insurance and shops for repairs

from my understanding, insurance just cuts the check after they assess the damage. the shop can then charge more as they " discover" more damages

my last minor accident, my TTS got a slight bump in the rear bumper that caused JUST a scratch, no dents no holes or anything. the shop claimed 8k in damages to insurance because that's the cost of a new bumper , paint + materials and labor. but they only resprayed the bumper and used the rest of the money for other goodies and even pocketed some cash....so yea i coulda gotten a whole new bumper if i wanted to, but no point cause it was just a scratch lol

that's how all my experiences with insurance went ^^^^. the key thing is to have a GOOD relationship with a shop u trust. they always have their own insurance inspectors they work with

My body shop uses ONLY genuine parts. I don't even have to convince them to do so.

That’s called insurance fraud, FYI. It’s a felony.

I agree with u to an extent. But its no real difference if an insurance cuts u a check and u decide not to fix the car. I dont believe thats really fraud. They cut u a check and u can do what u want with the money, no?

It’s actually really different. If they are legitimately making you whole financially and you choose to make that investment elsewhere, it’s all good. If the shop (or you) exaggerates the repairs to get extra money, that’s fraud, regardless what you do for it.

I’m no goodie-two-shoe, in fact, a little bit of it is probably required to cover real costs now that the insurance companies have squeezed everyone, but multi-thousand claims get investigated eventually if there’s a pattern.

No i completely get what ur saying. But the shop i used didn’t overly exaggerate at all ( ok maybe to some extent). I purposely chose a shop who only deals with insurance claims cause paying cash for their labor rates is stupid expensive. What a normal shop typically charges for , lets say, a front end bumper respray is about 400, this shop charges around 1200. But its the BEST shop to use here in NY. They do mainly high end cars like aston martins, lambos, ferraris, royces, and high end porsches ( do these rich ppl even know how to drive ?! ) Their quality is better than oem which is the reason for their premium.

Last time i asked them how much to just patch up the bottom splitter and blend ( not full repaint) because i got a slight scuff, they quoted me 800 lol...

This was only the 1 time i used this shop though. My buddies on az uses them all the time because of their unmatched work and they do charge up the @$$. Which is why its worth going to them through insurance

Iv used other shops as well that werent as good but they always covered at least the deductible should i have been required to pay it.

This is the shop :

I wish I lived near them too! That's the type of place I used to work with in Cincinnati. Their main clientele was the Ferrari / Porsche / Lambo & Restoration crowd. Nashville has Bob's Bait and Tackle and Body Shop still, so we need to grow up a bit.
