hi guys! a friend of mine recently encouraged me to start a build thread for my car(s). I've got two 1995.5 S6 Avants, here's a little about them!
emerald/ecru - purchased in fall 2018 with 155k miles on it with a stock motor and stock turbo, chipped ECU (Steve Eiche 1+) and lowering springs
currently has just over 180k miles and is my daily driver, but has been heavily modified since then
10/2018 - took the car to avantoberfest (~800 miles and 5,000 feet of elevation) after doing NO stress testing and just an oil change and coolant flush
https://i.imgur.com/ERVnGvo.jpg
03/2019 - took the car to colorado from NJ and back (~6,000 miles of driving and ~8000ft elevation climb with just under 1,000lbs of humans and cargo in the car)
https://i.imgur.com/TdyJ4XJ.jpg
05/2019 - started modifying the car - ordered 034motorsport's turbo kit and quickly discovered that the car was unhappy with the tune and the poorly fitting injector cups were causing fuel to spray all over the engine bay (which is definitely something I did NOT want). fixed the issue by getting the car tuned at EFIExpress in NH and ordering fuel injector cups from Apikol in CO.
- Gen 1 3071r .63AR, RS2 Exhaust manifold
- Bosch 044, Bosch EV14 injectors
- 2bennett coil program (8x380 front, 8x350 rear with full adjustment internally)
https://i.imgur.com/w9QdCEv.jpg
at this point the car was putting down somewhere in the neighborhood of 300whp/wtq @24psi
06/2019 - had the car tuned by matt felbaum of S&M autosport in PA. car put down 380whp/340wtq, but knocked sometimes and didn't quite like to have the A/C on. ran it for a few weeks carefully, and reverted to the EFIExpress tune after having my fun.
been driving it every day ever since with very few issues. as it sits, the car needs a DS CV axle or joint and i am going to be turning down the stiffness of the suspension...and started doing the headliner yesterday!
will post more about it when i finish the headliner process this week and post about my other avant when she gets back from the shop :)

Car looks and sounds great. When
I inquired with Marc about a gt3076
tune on a stock AAN/3b he told me me
that he could have it up to 375-400whp.
What’s limiting your setup to 300whp?
I’ll be running my second coupe with
a gt3076 0.82ar on a stock 3b.

Marc seemed to think the gen 1 3071r turbo was inadequate, recommended a GTX gen 2. i have a .63ar which may be another limiting factor - i have an RS2 exhaust manifold, but a wagner manifold may flow better
when matt felbaum tuned the car, he told me that marc had the wastegate open until 3200rpm due to the turbo spooling too quickly. matt changed it so it stayed closed, and the car felt way better to drive - however, it was finicky to daily drive in town and stuff due to the way fueling at idle was set up
i think at the end of the day i'll be switching to a K24-7400 and aiming for 330whp until i have the chance to build the car!
it's also worth mentioning that marc was under the impression that we could hit 340whp on my setup, but said that the combo of 93oct instead of E85 and "the turbo not flowing well enough" were contributing factors
I absolutely love this car! Not only is it an old longroof, but it's the right color AND it has a backwards facing rear seat! I love that you not only have pride in owning it, but in driving it and tastefully modding it to make it OEM-plus in a way that works better for today. There's decent odds my gf and I might be at Avantoberfest next year. She just picked up a B5 S4 Avant and I'm on the list for the new RS6 Avant... Long live the long roof!

thought i'd post some photos of the white one while she's undergoing surgery!
8-30-19: acquired the car
144933
9-1-19: it left me stranded just 100 miles from home with a blown POS unit and dead fuses
144935
9-11-19: the day i got the car running again - performed an oil change and hydraulic fluid flush at 156,014 miles
144930
9-18-19: replaced the hydraulic fluid pump and bled the system twice, realized my steering issue lay within the pump to rack line (no restrictor)
144931
9-22-19: threw the winter wheels from the green car on and sorted out a few blown coil packs. stress tested the car and found a cam cover leak at the half moon seal
144932
currently looking into why the clutch seems a bit stiffer than it should be even though it is stock, guesses are that it may be the slave/master cyl or a throwout bearing

How did you get the Apikol

make a separate FMIC kit

The apikol uses a thick core
and the euro bumpers have

the car spent some time in CO prior to my ownership which is when the front mount and brakes went on - they appear to have used smaller end tanks, and it's listed in the receipts as an apikol front mount though it bears a heavy resemblance to the fmic on anthony @audizine's car (which is a 034 unit)

148922
meanwhile, it seems my luck has run out with the greenie :-(
was 32° F two days ago and i left her parked outside, turned her on to warm her up and left her idling while i was making some tea - started pulling away, and the battery light and low fuel light came on (even though the alternator was fine and tank was half full) - gauges slowly started to go up and register actual value as i drove
thought nothing of it until i was at a stop sign and saw that my coolant temp gauge was here:
148923
so, i've ordered a new viscous fan clutch in hopes that this is my issue; in the meantime, trying to hunt down why my fuel gauge is taking 5-10 minutes to register the gas in the tank and why my battery light comes on is going to be quite fun....

so i recently put a K24-7400 turbo on the car, and am running the car on the previous motor and boost chips it was on with the N75 unplugged (a result of the tuner sending me the wrong chips).
i’m having an issue with the car, as described below:
car is a 1995.5 S6 with a chipped ECU running on speed density (on chips that were known to work with my current fueling setup). i recently swapped the turbo, and according to the tuner, the car should run fine with the old chips (with N75 unplugged).
now for the problems: the car will start and idle ok, regardless of hot or cold. when the car gets warm, it will kind of wander ~100-150rpm or so occasionally but nothing in the nature of stalling. the REAL problems happen when i give the car gas: however, once i get the car to get past its stuttering @ 1-1.5k, it'll rev ok to 3,000 and hold rpms fine but really does not like going off from idling.
other things to note: the TPS clicks as it should, IAC being unplugged the car does NOT idle higher (does not behave as it should). the car does not throw fault codes at me.
notes on the car:
1995.5 Audi S6 avant, relayed 044 w/ 550cc inj & volvo K24-7400 turbo. stock cams, front mount, speed density w/ socketed/chipped ecu. 2.0T coil pack conversion, forge DV

I had an issue when I did my first AAN swap in a Coupe. The car would start-up great and once it got up to temperature its would goto shit. The idle would fluctuate and most cases it would shortly die thereafter.
Ended up being the coolant sensor in the back of the head. Might be something to look at.

i was thinking somehow the iac and coolant temp sensors were swapped, but temp seems to be reading properly as reflected in the gauge cluster - think i’m just gonna give up and hand it over to a friend, shops near me won’t smoke test it because it’s “not a vacuum leak”

Those pictures are sick. I'm happy to see many having appreciation for these Avants. I'm currently refreshing my 2004 A6 C5 3.0L Avant. I'm not ready to leave the C5 platform yet, although I nearly did last year when I hopped in a Q5. My A6 C5 is my daily driver. Recently, my neighbor backed into my driver side fender, messing up my driver side headlight and front bumper as well. It gave me an opportunity to restore my Avant to a much better condition as much as possible. Once I'm done with the body work and detailing I plan to go for a spirited drive. Would be great to see your progress in-person. I'm in New York

well, a lot has happened since i last posted here, so i’ll do my best to chronicle the events!
i purchased a built motor for the green avant (meant to take 600whp easily) and had plans to get it to 400whp on 93. unfortunately, i made the mistake of trusting the seller (a “reputable guy” according to the C4 community, i will not share his name), and i got burned pretty badly. here are photos of motor upon inspecting it with a borescope after purchase:
196148196149196150
every cylinder looked like this, with oil on top of the piston and vertical scoring on the walls. of a supposed 2000 mile freshly rebuilt motor. sweet. i had everything ready to go, including a fresh xona turbo, EMU black and a tubular exhaust manifold. oh well, one step forward and two steps back i guess.
getting ready to pull the freshly installed built (burnt) motor:

and with that, my month of august was done! my new turbo setup will rest to spool another day, but at least the car is back on the road :-)
other stuff that i didn’t write about previously:
- wavetrac rear differential
- apikol rear sway bar
- apikol rear subframe bushings
- OE replacement front inner subframe to chassis bushings

Hey Ani, I'm still working on my Avant, but its getting to closer completion will end up looking better than before; but I would rather consider getting the entire car repainted at some point if it holds up to its reliability. I'm not too from the NYC, literally on Long Island, still not far from you, would definitely love to see your C4 in person. [:)]
I'm still waiting for parts from the Audi dealer; they include an Audi ABS Sensor for the rear driver side and 2 brackets to store the shape of the fender and flush bumper finish (for in between the subframe and fender); in the meantime I'm replacing the stalks on my steering wheel, replacing rear driver door, and replacing door latch on the front driver door; also need to bleed the brakes and top off transmission fluid (a follow-up to last year's radiator replacement). Then comes the daunting detailing [>_<] followed by getting the car back on the road.

it’s all good man! it definitely can be - i’m going to go another millimeter up and bump the compression back closer to stock. the previous owner of the motor told me after my purchase that he didn’t retune the car after the build, and ran the 7.2:1 motor on a 9.3:1 tune...guessing that contributed to some sort of damage that i was not aware about

mostly pnp! i had help from another UrS owner / friend of mine, the power plug was a bolt on with minor repinning and the speaker wires were remedied with a simple scosche wiring adapter - the only thing i had to splice was wires for ground loop isolators (to prevent amp popping on turn on / off)

it's pretty awesome! i've been using mine for about a week (posted on the 12th because my shroud came in to make it look all pretty). as long as you can get your hands on good ground loop isolators if you have factory amps, the sound is phenomenal. couple of cool features:
- if the unit is off and the car is on (even just ignition, the way i have it wired to receive power), when you receive a call it'll turn on automatically so you can take the call via bluetooth (and use the head unit controls to pick up the call and hang up)
- easily the most seamless unit i've had because i hop into the car, the phone connects automatically and i can just start playing music without finagling through the head unit controls
- has a charging port on the back so you can run a USB to the passenger or driver's footwell and have it connect to your phone
- comes with its own DAB antenna so you don't have to use the factory antenna to listen to the radio
a lot of people have been reviewing it as "too expensive" but i think for what you get (including the aesthetics), it's a pretty incredible package

Not so much.
yeah, learned my lesson the hard way - ECS never was and never will be the solution

water pump also needed some help, despite only having 30k on it

thank you! haven't been doing very much driving due to the current events, but i'll be picking up some goodies for the white avant pretty soon (and plan to rebuild the green avant's donor motor early next year).

I just noticed you have the euro fenders with the side markers.
The only thing missing is the headlight washer delete panels and
just get a UK RHD full size mirror and some Italian market fender
extension and you’ll have full Euro spec exterior.
I almost got there with my emerald urs6 sedan lol. Still have big
dreams but will probably build another urs4 white on black avant
clone.

i haven't decided yet, i have an EMU Black here on the counter, but i might just go with VEMS because more tuners in the 5cyl community seem to be well versed with it, and options are good! also considering motronic for the sake of drivability, but not entirely sure it's the best choice
and that's awesome!! i can't wait to see that :-)

been a while! here's what's going on:
i sold the GT3071 that was on the green avant to a friend, and since everything i need for the build has arrived, i'm taking a break from driving it and keeping it in the garage until i have time to pull the motor (plus, the alternator died in a wegmans parking lot a week before i made the decision haha) so....
....white avant gets driven now! it was in the garage for the winter, and now is getting some much needed upgrades:
porsche 986S calipers, brackets courtesy of apikol
229488
and this week, it gets the volvo S60R/K24-7400 turbo upgrade! this setup was on the green avant before and proved to be fun and reliable as a daily.
i also haven't decided if i want more low, or i should leave it at stock height and throw some offroad kit on it...what do you guys think?

i can't tell if i want to raise it or lower it - there's a set of H&R 29800s sitting in the trunk, so i'm considering that for convenience, but i also mountain bike a lot so i'm torn.
turbo swap coming later this week (probably tomorrow!)

I was going to say big 67+mm & built motor on the green
and you could do a small EFR or Garrett on the white. Still
be at low 4’s and have decent low end.
Volvo turbo will get maxed out quick. You’ll end up wanting
more... I know I always do.

wish i had the time/$ to justify building the bottom end on the white, i'd definitely do an EFR in stock location with a wagner if i could. volvo turbo should be fine for a daily, it's mostly stock noise wise and should encourage me to drive slower anyway hahaha (although i'm sure i'll get tired of it at some point)

so it's been a while! i got wrapped up with life and work for the last year or so, and haven't had the chance to work on my cars in a bit. here's an update:
i decided that the red avant was beyond saving, and started to cannibalize the interior on it. the previous owner had installed the headgasket backwards and corrected his mistake shortly after (can't even begin to fathom how that's possible), but nonetheless the dipstick had milk on it and i didn't want to stick a borescope in there and find out what the full deal was. so, it's going to a friend in massachusetts who has taken on the task of saving it.
pulled the euros off the white avant and stuck the US bumpers back on, nobody wants to paint match pearl white (go figure)
https://i.imgur.com/bZptokk.jpg
doesn't look too bad! just needs some low. badly...thankfully i had those 29800s and the spare 29921 rears from the green car to put on!
the trick here is that the 29800s are lower, and the avants like to sag in the rear (or LOOK like they sag) - 29800s up front and the slightly higher 29921s are a good combo, and will help me avoid using spring perch collars in the rear (for now)

got back from VT safely, and had a list of upgrades to do. here's what i've got coming:
- oil cooler DIY (setrab setup, plan on thoroughly documenting this and maybe making some bracket kits for C4 owners) - credit to EDIGREG on QW for this
- GT3071r .63ar, same setup i had on the emerald avant prior to taking it apart (550cc inj, 4bar fpr, 25psi, lots of fun and DEFINITELY getting it on a dyno this time)
- getting some street wheels for it! terrified of driving everywhere with these HREs, looking into fifteen52 Chicane or OZ superturismo LM
- vacuum booster conversion? (still undecided, but if i can find the parts i'll definitely do it)
also got around to putting a boost gauge in and wiring a backlight in (tapped into the ashtray light)

I was able to find your OG youtube video. Then this thread. So sick build. Looking into s4 or s6 in future for sure. Lots of s4 b5 out here in europe but less and less 2.2t engines around. Also from what i heard working on 5cyl is easier than 2.7tt. Mine will be weekend car as i have c6 as my daily.
