Recently, I have noticed a sort of ticking noise for the first second or two on startup. I couldn't find anything in search if anyone has experienced this. This isn't the diesel sound as the car idles a little higher before settling down after 10 or 20 seconds. I will try and get a video to post when I have some time. Wondering if anyone has experienced it and knows what it could be.

Not sure. Does 2013 do that? The sound was not present before and sounds like it's from the engine area.

Maybe an upper cam chain tensioner? It's a common issue unfortunately, I know my '13 A6 gas 3.0t does it but I haven't had time or ambition to do it yet. Usually it only makes the sound on cold starts and not every time. I know there have been other posts in the past about this with videos that has the sound.
Found a video,it's only a quick second of noise so you may have to watch it 2-3 times to compare but it is there. https://youtu.be/fPgKEvjRP4Q

Doesn't sound good whatever it is...sounds like something flapping around that won't last long. If that's the same as you're hearing, is it audible in the cabin?

There was another thread about this, and I seem to remember that the answer was this sound was the injectors getting filled up or something like that. I hear that as well.

It's hard to describe it but the one way I heard it described was like a bicycle with cards in the spokes. Basically it's the chain slapping around until it gets oil pressure and tightens the tensioner. The dealer claims it will do no harm and it's only a noise issue but I certainly made my point to them. Either way it's nothing they will cover so I'll just handle it at some point.

Hopefully it's what SpectreGadget said and the injectors making noise. got_boost, can you edit your title or post to note your specific platform? Diesel 3.0?

I think that’s the sound of the chain tensioner. Mine does this also and read there was a recall for this only if the car was still in warranty.

I'm on the road right now and can't seem to edit the post title from my phone. My car is a 2013 S6, so 4.0t. Sorry for leaving it out of the title.

I took this quick video before heading out for a business trip this morning. It was a little more faint I believe but will have to wait a week to check back and see how it sounds.

The 3.0 gasser has a problem with the tensioner making noise on start up. As I understand there is a tsb about it and Audi says it’s just a noise and not a problem. Dealers don’t fix it unless you make a big deal of it. Out of warranty it is an expensive fix because of the level of effort to perform it
