View Full Version : S6 S-Tronic Transmission Code

My transmission is jerky and I occasionally get a malfunction light on the dash when going into reverse. When this happens, reverse does not work at all. If I turn the car off and back on, I get reverse back but it's very jerky. Almost like the clutch is slipping then grabbing over and over. Also, when the car is warm, even if I don't lose reverse, it still lunges a lot backing up.

I have been dealing with this for almost a year and am ready to get it 100% taken care of. I did the mechatronic repair kit. It certainly changed when the car lunges but did not fix it. Before I did the repair kit, I never actually lost reverse.

I finally got a code that will hopefully point me to either replace the clutch packs or mechatronic. With all of the research I've done, it could be either-or. The dealer just replaces the entire transmission, so they are no help. Can anyone help so I don't have to guess at which to replace?

Well if you replaced mechatronics already it is more than likely the clutch packs that need to be replaced. How many miles on the car and what year? There are other posts floating around in these forums with people experiencing the same reverse gear issue and clutch packs seemed to fix it. I have been experiencing the same reverse issue on an incline for a while now and plan to replace clutch packs when it becomes excessive. As of right now ill only get the malfunction error when trying to reverse up a larger incline when the car is warm. Ive gotten it maybe 3 times overall on my 13 S6.

It's a 2013. I have not replaced the mechatronics unit. I only did the repair kit. I have read through all of the other posts and no one seems to be having the same exact issue as me. I was hoping the code could point me in the right direction. Right now I am planning on replacing the clutch packs.

From another forum, apparently your vehicle mileage is 95,747miles (154,090km). It looks like your Vin number is also posted (probably should remove that).

I would guess this refers to the N439 Sub Transmission valve that controls Sub-Gearbox 2 (clutch K2): "P17D500 Valve 3 in separate transmission 2 Mechanical malfunction"

The N439 Sub Transmission valve is in the Mechatronic unit.

From (DSG) SSP 990193:

"Sub-Gearbox 1
Odd numbered gears (1, 3, 5, 7) are driven through central input shaft 1 by clutch K1.

Sub-Gearbox 2
Even numbered gears (2, 4, 6) and the reverse gear are driven through input shaft 2 (a hollow shaft) by clutch K2."

Indeed. I'm not concerned. You can walk by the car and see the VIN. Thanks for the heads up though. I know some people would be concerned about that.

As for the info. THANK YOU! This would lead me to believe the clutch is indeed the issue. If it sometimes lurches starting in 1st and reverse, that would make the real issue in K1 and K2. I just happened to get the code when reverse was not available. Am I thinking about this the correct way?

The K2 clutch is the one activated for reverse. It might be the clutch or it might be a sticky valve.

Right, but what I was thinking was if starting from a stop, sometimes it lurches into first gear, wouldn't that be K1? Even though there is no code, it's an issue on K1 too.

Well the 2013 DSG transmissions were a little wonky on the programming (there was a DSG TSB software update) & had a few other issues.

At 95k miles, most likely both clutches could have issues, which may have been accelerated by overheating. When sitting in traffic, with the clutch mildly engaged creeping forward, it can overheat the clutches.

I am not sure if some modes start in second gear. I know dynamic starts in 1st gear.

Thanks for all the info. I am looking at the TSB right now and it has not been done. It also doesn't describe my issue, but it might be worth the half-hour labor to have to dealer update it to find out.

Have you tried the clutch alignment process with VCDS yet?

If not the dealer should do it after updating software.

Are you saying you replaced the clutch and it didn't fix any issues or you are just doing both regardless?

Dang. My clutch has been ordered so I'll be doing it whenever it arrives. This makes me think I'll be either fixing or replacing the mech after the clutch. Bummer. I did the mech repair kit already but that didn't involve any of the valves.

Just a couple of questions though. Did you do the adaptation process through VAG Com? Did you re-do it after putting a couple of hundred miles on it? I only ask because I've seen people say that things smoothed out after doing that.

Also, just to make sure, the same code came back? after doing the above? Any details you can give would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Yes I did the clutch engagement adaptation after the clutch was replaced.
I cannot really drive the car as I dont want to damage my new clutch at all.
The same error code still appears as before changing the clutch. I think it will be a valves issue.
I'm going to buy the new valves tomorrow and fit them Friday night. So hopefully by the weekend I'll have it sorted.

I still think in alot of cases the clutch needs to be replaced to fully repair it. I could not get a successful clutch engagement adaptation before installing the new one.

I also cannot now get the clutch valve adaptation to work. So that's another clue.

The Transmission is smooth and fault free now.

I would advise others to change these valves first before doing the clutch, unless the clutch is slipping badly. Mine was not noticeably slipping.

Its certainly alot easier and cheaper to do the valves first and see how it goes.

I'm located in Brisbane Australia, I got them from a local supplier Motospecs at Eagle Farm.
I think they bring them in from a transmission supplier in the U.S.
The valves I listed came to $570Aud

Offtop - there are so many threads about dl501 transmission problems in many different sections, and to top this off, dl501 is fitted to many A cars in ROW but not NAR market. It might be worth to create an entire forum section for this transmission issues so that all the info is easily accessible and not buried under multiple oil change or front lip install threads. Afaik, A4Torque also posted about this issue in the B8 S4 section, so you can imaging the information gets a little bit scattered. Can we have mods entertain this idea of a separate dl501 stronic trans section, perhaps with some other dsgs there as well?

I installed that kit on my car, it doesn’t include those solenoids “multiplexers”. I was never able to source n435 or n439 anywhere but China/eBay which I don’t trust. I haven’t found a reputable supplier other than linesoon and they won’t respond unless you’re a vendor I’m assuming

Did installing this kit solve your issues? Also, it looks like the n435 and n439 are part of this kit.

I just got done with the clutch and am still having issues. I'm moving on to the solenoids.

Having similar issues. Resetting clutches with VCDS temporarily helps some. Did you use every part in that kit or is some of that extras? Glad to see this is being figured out.

Traded it with 116k on it. I think I was right around 100k when I did the solenoids.

I am suffering from a similar issue with my 2011 S5 3.0 cabriolet. Rough shifts, TPMS sensor comes on, then lose Reverse gear and also Drive sometimes. Dashboard warning messages about the transmission. Restarting the car gets me home. My scan tool pulls this error:

Valve 3 in Transmission Part 2 P17D5 00 [096] - Mechanical Malfunction

The mechatronics were replaced by Audi 4,000 miles ago with little improvement. They now want to replace the whole transmission for more than the car is worth. I am a pretty competent DIY mechanic with a lift and happy to dive in myself.

Question is, which transmission do I have? Is it the OB5 D501?
I am thinking to order this kit, is it the correct one for my trans?

What was the TCM temperature when the code appeared. Do you get a TCM communication code in the brake module.
