I had installed a flat bottom steering wheel in my S6 and had to change the airbag as well since my stock one wouldn't mount the same way. My stock one uses the little "ball" tab snap mechanism while the new wheel required the airbag with the flexing metal bars/wire to snap in. The seller that sold me the wheel also had the aibag for it so I bought that with it. The connectors were identical and everything was direct plug and play. However, now I have the Airbag light on the dash. Do I need to recode anything with Vagcom for the new airbag?

should not need coding for the airbag.

i replaced my airbag, and at some point i turned my ignition on with the airbag disconnected. this caused a airbag light on my dash. i used VCDS and cleared it.

double check and make sure all the clips at the back of the airbag are seated 100%.

ive also heard people say that even though plugs are the same/similar, the airbag is not. but i used an airbag that I was told was compatible with multiple audi models/years, and had no issue, so im not sure how true it is that airbags are that specific to cars.

That's odd, if the connectors matched it should have been plug n' play, but there could be CP on the airbag and you might need to have an adaptation performed.

IIRC, adaptations and CP are done only at the dealer. Keep us informed with your progress.

When you disconnect an airbag, you need to reset the code. It sounds like you turned the car on at some point during the install, even if it was in aux mode. You should be able to clear the code with a Vagcom or similar. If it comes back on, there is something else wrong.
