Hello and good day fellow enthusiasts.
I'm in process of purchasing the OEM audi roof bars to extend storage for family trips. The stroller takes about 50 percent of the trunk space so I'm looking into a roof storage solution.
My knowledge is limited with roof storage options so I'm looking for some guidance. Can I use any roof storage solution for the OEM bars or do I need to get the actual 300L Audi box? If it's a universal type of mounting, what box would you recommend? My goal is the fit the largest possible box that's reasonable to the 165lb total roof weight limit. Also, are the OEM bars noisy at highway speeds?
Thank you all in advance for taking the time to contribute,
Devin

Pretty timely post, since I was going through the same situation a couple months back. I also ended up going with the OEM crossbars - they aren't terribly noisy at highway speeds. They do make a whistling/whining noise, which is to be expected, but I can still hear the radio at my normal volume setting and the wife (when my selective hearing doesn't kick in [;)] ).
Yes, the OEM aero crossbars are mostly a universal mount, though I only have first-hand experience with Thule - I went with the Large Thule Motion Cargo Box. The XL is too big for the roof of the vehicle. The large cargo box fits plenty though!! I was able to fit our stroller, beach wagon, pop-up beach tent, portable bassinet and other misc. items all in the box - it is plenty large! One thing to remember, the weight limitation also includes the weight of the box, which is approx. 50lbs itself. I did call Thule prior to purchasing the box, but due to the year of my car (same as you - '16 A6), they had no fitment/safety data, so wasn't able to definitively say "yes, it will fit" - basically a CYA for Thule. Rest assured, it fits, and fits very well.
Good luck on your adventures!

I have an OEM set that I’ve never used for my RS7. If they’re the same part number and you’re interested I’m sure my price will be cheaper than new. ;)

Roof bars and cargo box were delivered earlier this week. I have yet to open the boxes to look at either components.
If I have time, I may mount it this weekend for a test fit.

I may be a bit late to your party but on my previous S4 (which I traded in on a new 2018 S6 back in February), I had the Audi factory Zubehor bars on that car with a Thule Force Alpine box. The bars made minimal noise and the box fit perfect. Added plenty of extra space for my snowboard bag (fully packed with my boots, helmet, goggles, 3 pairs of pants and two coats) and my wife's ski/boot bags. While I did have have the roof bars for my S4, we typically drive the Yukon Denali on trips to Colorado and North Michigan with the box up top. You will not regret your purchase as the roof box adds a ton of extra cargo carrying ability. The box you ordered is a little larger than the one I use so you'll have even more space!!!

Nice choice with the roof bars - I like the blacked out look. You will be very happy with the cargo box - the Lg is the perfect size. Good luck with the install
Side note: MVR 155 was very helpful in my decision making, with basically the same info he provided you. Good looking out to you, good sir!

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkGot the bars installed this evening. It would have been about an hour install but I chose to go buy a torque wrench that had the range required for 35 to 44 in lbs of torque. I didn't trust myself gauging the "Do not overtighten" by hand.
I'll try to get better pics during the day and also with the box installed. I take my first road trip with it next week!135203135204

Looks good! Interesting that the install instructions just said "Do not overtighten". The OEM set comes with a Torque Wrench Key Tool, that has the preset torque. Smart getting out there and buying the appropriate wrench for the job

Got some daytime photos today. The plan was to mount the box but we got a storm going in NY this evening.
I hear a small bit of wind noise above 60mph but it sounds minimal. I imagine that it'll be louder with the roofbox on.135357135358135359

That's a lot of storage and the rails/box look surprisingly good on the car. Are those carry-on suitcases?

Thanks,

So Im interested in this also, I was just going to do the stock OEM bars, seems like maybe some whistling, but are these also easily removable when you dont need them?

Extremely easy - I can remove them, by myself, in a little over 5 minutes. Same goes for installing. The one difference I have seen with OEM vs Other Brands (specifically on this thread), the OEM set comes with a pre-torqued allen tool, which helps with ease of install/removal.

Si I just picked these up from Audi, I used the coupon that was shared by the forum for the audi care packages (-$100) and audi accessory (-$150) !!! $396 - $150 so total was 246 + tax for OEM!

WOW! That is one incredible deal for the OEM set. I wish that coupon was live when I purchased mine...
