View Full Version : Oil overfill RS7

Picked my car up from the dealer last night (at closing and today is a holiday)and got a warning message on the drive home to remove oil as it was over full.

Is it bad for the car to drive like this? The dealer is 30 miles away. I don’t need to drive today but will need to get it back to the dealer.

Thanks

It’s not good to drive the car in this state. If you need to, keep the rpms as low as possible.

Probably not very helpful right now but I’d recommend buying a vacuum extractor like a Mityvac 7201, makes dealing with things like this super easy. I use it for my intermediate oil changes too and only do the filter at the regular 10k miles.

Actually I may do just that. I’d rather not drive it or tow it to the dealer. Thanks!

You have two options, get under the car remove plastic belly pan, open drain and let oil drain, get half a quart out and you’ll be fine, you don’t even need to fully remove the plug just loosen it till it starts leaking. Or go to the store (harbor freight etc) and get a fluid transfer pump usually $10 or so, and put it in the where the oil dipstick would be and suck about half a quart out. I would go with option 1 but you will need a triple square bit as well as torx to remove plastic pan. Good luck. I would definetly call the dealer and bitch them out. Might even get a free oil change next time. I hate going to the dealer, I havent been there yet without them jacking something up. Good luck.

Definitely dont drive it if its overfilled with oil. You could do serious damage like that.

The rs7 doesn’t have a dipstick. I looked for about 5 minutes like an idiot lol. Checked online the only way to check it is via the screen

On most cars we extract the oil. Unlike all the other engines, the V8s in the RS7s and other models there is no dip stick tube to extract from and the filter is on the bottom of the engine. It’s one car we actually drain from the pan.

I’m not sure how or why the tech didn’t check this before he shipped the car. The last thing I want is the service light, oil level or TPMS light to come back on when the customer drives the car after it leaves.

It could really only be a 1/4 qt over but yes I would get it drained. Had one customer come in that was 3+ quarts over kept adding oil because he had issues with his oil level sensor.

Using the extractor can be a pain and sometimes leaves oil oil in the pan especially if the oil is not hot enough. Then when you full up with the proper qty it’s “over filled” but with draining from the pan this shouldn’t happen.

Thanks all! I’m highly annoyed I would have turned around but they were already closed.

I’ll call them tomorrow for next steps.

I'd probably get an oil extractor instead of loosening the plug. The plug has a crush washer and should be replaced each time. I'd be afraid of having it loosen or leak.

The 4.0TT in the RS7 does not have a dipstick tube to insert an extractor in. Only option is to drain from plug

Not true, it does have a dipstick tube just not a dipstick, it has a black plug insert where the dipstick would normally be...but the tube is there. I know this because I use an extractor to remove the oil from my RS7! Looking at the engine from the front it’s on the right side of the block down next to the ABS pump.

You can actually buy a dip stick that fits in the RS7 dipstick tube if you want one, it’s the same as the S5 V8 dipstick. Part number 8T3 8TA 079115611AB

I work at a dealer. The last RS7 I did an oil change on did NOT have a dipstick tube. When we go to get parts they give us a new oil pan plug because of this, as we extract from every other engine.

Ok I hear what your saying but I literally did this to my 2016 RS7 3 weeks ago so I know it’s there. [;)]

I have tore my rs7 engine apart twice, there is a tube on the driver side under abs pump
Right there. Not sure if there is a hose small enough to fit through to extract oil from there. But there is.

Maybe a different engine code. This was a 2018

Yep, Mityvac 7201 works fine. Bit of a pain to get the black plug thing out just because of access but otherwise just like any other car. I replaced my plug with the dipstick I mentioned above.

Same engine in all the RS7s as far as I know, I had the same tube on my 2017 RS7 too before I switched to the 2016.

Thanks all. I believe this is the plug right here. I’ll be contacting the dealer tomorrow as I don’t want them giving me any shit. I’ll then drain 1/2 a quart or so and take it in.

Given the overfill situation do you think I should warm up the engine first or just try to pull oil cold?

Normally the oil needs to be warm for the extractor to work well if the oil is cold it can be too thick to extract properly, but that’s very much warm, not hot. Best way I find is to let the car just get up to temp (when the redline changes from 5ish to 6800) either on a short drive or just idling then leave it with the engine off for 20-30mins and then extract, that’s usually about perfect temp.

That said if you’re only pulling half a quart not all the oil it’ll probably be fine cold if you don’t want to warm it up with the overfill of oil. I’d try it cold, if it won’t extract, then warm it up.

It will extract, just not fast.

Depending on how over filled the engine is then the crank will be slapping the surface of the oil in the pan and create air bubbles in the oil. Eventually you will have a frothy air filled mess in the pan and now your oil pump is sucking air bubbles and not oil. All these air bubbles will be delivered to the engine and not oil. The end worst case scenario from this is that engine seizes from lack of lubrication. Until you get the oil level down I would not run the engine at all. If you do nothing with it today and they say bring it in then tell them to send the flatbed or you want a house visit from a tech

Thanks again all. I am on a flatbed headed to the dealer. I could have done the evac but this keeps everything under warranty. Plus I have Audi Care.

I assume the same dipstick can be used in a S7 as well?

Before you go down the path of removing the oil and all that:
read this:
https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/861015-S8-plus-4-0TT-quot-Please-reduce-oil-level-quot-with-solution

This is with almost 4-5k miles driven and it still wouldn't go away.
