View Full Version : B7 A4 base 2.0T not running

I’m in desperate need of some advice. I got an A4 before the winter, drove it for two weeks and it died. It’ll crank but it just keeps cranking and won’t catch. I’ve tried unplugging the maf sensor but nothing happened and the belts appear to be working and in good shape. One of the inner casings for the coil is broken and it seems like one of the plugs aren’t connecting as well. The spark plugs and both fuel pumps have been replaced and when I did the high pressure fuel pump I could hear a buzzing after I replaced it and it wasn’t making any noise before. Before the car died it had three codes according to the mechanic that looked at it but after it died there was 14 (most of which were repeats). Recently someone came by with a vag com so I have the results of that, I'm just not sure how to post it here but I would be able to send it elsewhere upon request.
I hope someone can help give me some advice! I’m mainly trying to figure out if I should just sell the car at this point. It’s been so long but I really don’t want to get rid of the car, especially if it’s easy enough to fix

Codes:
P0300 multiple misfire
P0302 cyl 2 misfire
P0303 cyl 3 misfire
P0171 bank 1 system too lean
P000A intake a camshaft position slow bank 1
P12A2
P0507 idle air system rpm higher than normal
P2404 evap leak (pending)
P0089 fp regulator 1 performance (pending)

Start by working on P0171, P12A2 and P0507 first. These usually pop up when your PCV valve goes bad. If it goes bad enough the over pressure will try to push out oil out of every seal. If you have oil around your valve cover bolts and oil cap, this is a sign that your PCV valve went bad. If it goes really bad and you have been driving with it for a while like this, it can cause the rear main seal to leak. Very expensive to fix if that happens.

Then you should check to make sure cylinder 2 and 3 are getting spark. You can buy a coil pack tester for cheap. If you see spark on that coil when you crank it, you’re getting spark. Make sure those 2 plugs are good if those 2 coils are getting spark.

Then go after your fuel code. Hook up a pressure gauge and see what you have for fuel pressure.

Fuel, air and spark. The basics of diagnosis.

And for P000A, pull the connector for the camshaft adjuster valve (n205) and see if it has oil in it. If it does, you need a new one.

looks to me like just not enough gas ......

system would run lean , it would misfire, LPFP crapping out or pressure regulator ?
VCDS would be good here

If he (she?) didn’t already replace both fuel pumps I would agree with you and would have probably suggested he (she) start there.

The fact that he has a lean code, idle air code and an EVAP leak, PLUS misfires on 2 cylinders makes me think PCV with maybe even a leak at the rear main since it won’t even run. The rear main leak would be easy enough to prove or disprove by going under the car.

This is for a TSI EA888 but ours fail just like this too.

oh I missed the both fuel pumps part... hmm.. fuel filter ? start simple ?

None of us will know for sure but all those codes together generally lead to some sort of large air leak. The rear main seal and a major PCV failure would be the first things I looked at if it were mine. Or maybe it’s something stupid like a broken dip stick tube 🤣

It’s hard to say.

Are you still with us jessicabell or did you burn the car already?

wouldnt rear main seal cause major oil leak? i would look into that HPFP and camshaft you prolly jammed up

Sorry it’s been so long. Fighting myself to light it up! Should have mentioned I made the mistake of unplugging the battery so it won’t read any codes on an average scan. But with the vagcom scan, there was different codes that I didn’t get on the scan before I unplugged the battery. I’ve been told that there’s two on the vagcom that could keep the car from turning on. One is P1861 throttle position sensor so I took off the intake hose and there’s movement in the flap but it does seem stiff. Should I look more into doing a cleaning? I believe it’s a motor operated one though so I’m not sure if I should just replace it. There’s also a p2138 accelerator position sensor (g79/g185), would that be something in the motor??
The other code I’m trying to look into is p1602 power supply terminal 30 voltage too low. I’m trying to check the relay but I had a hard time finding it. Is it one in the ECU box or is it inside the car under the wheel?

Even if I didn’t try to start the car when the pump was off? I figured since the shaft didn’t move, it would sit the same way the old follower did

Since you have Vag Com turn the key on and look at measured value block 060. Look at the 2 percentage values in the display field. What do they equal when you add them together? If your throttle body is working both of those numbers added up should equal 99-100%

If they equal anything different than 99-100% switch to basic settings 060 and run the test with the key on/engine off. If this test fails or doesn’t complete, you need a new throttle body.

And ignore Joepickems. He’s a thief and he’s probably a little retarded. Doesn’t know anything about cars.

Someone out of town came over with their vag com to try and help me. Even he admitted he wasn’t a professional with them but at least I’d have the results and could talk to other people to see their opinion. I can see if he’ll be in the area anytime soon or I can try to find someone else.
And thanks for the heads up!!
