So my car has served me well the past 6 years and made it to 200k with the original clutch before the motor seized due to a supposed failed oil pump. Upon inspection particles were found in the oil and motor would no longer turn even when done manually. I don’t want another car note as I have other financial obligations before doing so. With that note it leaves me with the following options:

1) sell the car whole and look for a more practical daily beater
2) part the car (least viable option for me due to lack of resources and time with a newborn)
3) fix the car, install new clutch/LWFW and enjoy it for a few more years without a car note

What do you guys recommend Especially to those who have encountered similar issues or gone way past 200k miles of ownership?

To get everyone to speed I have listed everything I know the car has currently installed or waiting to be installed

I like where your heads at 👍🏾 🤣 but....ended up passing the SW on to my father as an early retirement gift.

Honestly, though..

1) this seems like the best option, considering being a new father. grats!
2) from personal experience this can be extremely annoying to do/deal with unless you have the time/space to do it, then there is having random people come over to your house to look at the car and decide what parts they want/need.
3) the odds of finding a motor with known service history is slim to none, harder to find one with low mileage. this to me would be the biggest financial mistake, having a newborn makes this option a no-go imo.

If you do decide to part, dibs on your grille [:D]

Sell the Audi and buy a corvette.

According to your sig, you are in CA. Next to zero reason to own a quattro in a sun belt state imo unless you just love Audis. I'm on my 6th consecutive Audi and I swear to you, if I stay in CA my next car is going to be something super low maintenance, V8, rwd, and stick.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding a low(ish) mileage motor for my car and Im only doing it because i just bought the stupid thing and In my estimation its better to fix it and drive out the expense than sell it as a shell for next to nothing. yours is at 200k and I assume you've owned it for a while. Because I dont trust my new motor its basically going to be new besides bearings and rings when it goes into my car.

If I had purchased a house it would be a no-brainer for me to purchase a new reliable vehicle. Many have said to part it out to make the most money back but with a newborn any free time I get goes towards sleep lol. I’ve been going back and forth about the idea of just finally letting go and waiting out to purchase another vehicle (Swaying between a 5th gen 4Runner or 2017+ Subaru STI). Part of me just wants to get over driving a manual and get a cruiser but the inner car guy in me says get something fun stock. The Audi has served me well (actually better than I imagined for my first euro) considering it was purchased with low 30k miles. I also loved when driving this car I felt confident with any weather thrown at me and managed to get decent mpg with a lead foot. I mainly went on here to get others opinions and possibly run into others with similar issues. I’m also having a difficult time finding a reliable vehicle for under $6k (cost to repair vehicle). Any ideas on what to search for if option 1 is chosen would be greatly appreciated as well!!

@conspiracy
Thanks man! It’s very rewarding and exhausting all at once. If I do some kind of part out it’ll mainly be things I can remove and still manage to move the car out of my sister-in-law’s garage (smaller ticket items). I’ll keep you in mind for the grille 😉 and pictures of my car if it helps others persuade me to keep it or not.

Does anyone know what would be a reasonable price to sell this car at as is? Something that’s fair for both the buyer & seller... Right now I’m about 50/50 between selling it as a rolling chassis or just biting the bullet and repairing it.

Either source another low-mileage engine and have someone (an indy) to do the job for cheap $$ or get rid of the mofo and buy a Tesla Model S (https://www.tesla.com/models), because that's gonna be my next upgrade! Can't go wrong with 0-60 in 2.4sec!!!

Congrats on the kiddo. I just had my second...4 days ago, haha.

Having a kid absolutely saps any time you had for wrenching. But All hope is not lost. I have a engine in my basement I'm rebuilding that I hope to have in by the summer. My engine has never run right since the CF blew 50k ago. In any event, I bet you wont find a car you like *BETTER* than your b7, and running/upkeep costs at this point are a lot less than a new car payment. However if you want something newer, the B8.5s are really nice and can be had in a manual.

Look around, engines are pretty common these days. I bought my engine im rebuilding from a friend on AZ (tankdeer) with a known history (ran well when pulled). I'd say $1500 for a used engine and you'll be fine.

Honestly, if I ever move to a different car it'll be a b8 avant (and manual swap) or a Tesla. I'm not enamored with Audi's latest offerings. Maybe an RS/S3 but no manual option is a deal breaker for me...

Thanks Charles!! And congrats to you as well!! My daughter is my new hobby 😬 I just want something safe and easy to transport her in. I honestly can’t say how many times I’ve gone back and forth about selling or fixing this car (my friends are probably sick and tired of hearing it too). I’m not financially set for another car note and these frantic searches through Craigslist with the budget of fixing the Audi yields me little to no results. I’m not having another child anytime soon so I don’t feel the need to have a 3rd row. I’m just meh about the whole situation.

I feel you on the space thing. To me, moving to an avant from a sedan was a reasonable compromise, given my wife has a Q5 with “more space.” Tip tip: they’re really not any bigger than an avant.

I will admit though, I keep seeing mk7 Golf Rs around here and they’re incredibly tempting cars. But my b7 just feels right to me.

I was in a similar situation. With a 9 month old daughter and an aging car I realized I didn’t have time for both. As preventative maintenance continued to add up, I decided I was done paying shop prices for work I’d happily do if I had the time. I spent well over the cost of a used engine, installed. Only to add another few months of ownership.
I ended up in a gen 5 4Runner, and haven’t regretted it for a minute. Sure, now I have a car payment again, but I also have a warrantied car with free maintenance for the next 2 years. And we can all fit comfortably with that monstrosity of an infant car seat.

If you have real adult responsibilities and zero time, old Audi’s aren’t for you.

The decision seems pretty easy. Sure, TI edition A4’s are cool but they aren’t that cool. Get something more reliable and family friendly.

I worked it out and I pay about the same in maintenance on my Avant as I would financing something new and Japanese. I could finance a new Accord or Camry for what I pay in maintenance every year and break even. 🤣

I don’t have kids and very few real adult responsibilities so having a car as a hobby was easy to do. I used to have access to a full garage I could use to wrench on my cars for next to nothing but that has changed and Audi ownership is getting very expensive for me now. I may have to reconsider what my next car will be because of it.

Maybe a new Japanese SUV or full size car is a smarter move now that your priorities are changing.

Working out numbers right now with a friends mechanic. So far price has been something I couldn’t pass up on. Hoping it all works out so I can just save money to purchase an identical T4R to Sylvania’s (very nice ride btw!)...that is after my wife and I can purchase a house. She already approved of the 4Runner as the family vehicle :)

These oil pumps are shit bombs. Mine failed and I got a new long block. The turbo managed to make it out alive through that.

I would just get a rebuilt or used bottom end and bolt on your good head, turbo (assumed) and intake. Your HPFP may be worn alot from being oil deprived. Check that. Mine was worn through as I drove it about 1/4 mile in limp mode with the oil pump shot.

You've invested so much in it and it looks great. I wouldn't want more car payments.

Bottom end will be replaced with a rebuilt block. Luckily turbo is still in great shape otherwise I’ll probably just throw in another OE BorgWarner k03. Fuel system was completely refreshed a few months prior, both HPFP and LPFP. I will find out the condition of the rest of the components. For now getting the car running for at least another 2+ more years is my goal (80+mile daily commute). By then I’ll be able to commit to another car note.

The good thing about a rebuilt bottom end is no oil consumption...assuming the builder knows what he's doing.

My original block consumed oil. The rebuilt one doesn't at all. The factory piston rings or the guys installing the pistons must have been retarded.
