View Full Version : 4.2 A6 and RS6 tensioner pulley torque differences?

Did a 4.2... a6 manual calls for 20nm and rs6 like my touareg manual called for 20nm and 1/4 turn? What’s different? I used a conti kit which came with a new bolt. I don’t recall seeing torque value instructions, so I was to double check, but there were 4 separate instructions for d3/rs6/Allroad/and Touareg/phaeton etc from conti...

I did 20nm and then went for the quarter turn, and in my hand it felt iffy so i stopped about 2/3 of the 1/4 then (60 degrees of the 90). I didn’t wanna strip it or sheer anything... then I see others say 18 ft lbs which is more than 20nm but no 1/4 turn.

Someone on Fb group advised of oem bolts can snap if not torqued right. I’m a bit nervous. By hand it felt proper... any further maybe bad things would have happened full 1/4 or maybe not?

I can’t even find a part number for the bolt. It looks like it only comes with the tensioner pulley.

Conflicts with A6 4.2 manual here; also I think the eccentric and idler values are mixed up. I did 45 while counter torquing the eccentric next to the crank with two prongs:

One I thought from diagram:

youre over thinking it. just tighten it

It’s already tightened and working, but reports of overtorqued bolts that later randomly break under use has me concerned. So I’m wondering why different specs...

I've seen a lot of conflicting torque specs within the service manuals for many other parts, so nothing new there. IMHO, you did the right thing by splitting the difference in this case. I wouldn't worry about that particular bolt shearing, it's pretty stout for it's application. Now, the harmonic balancer bolts on the other hand, I've heard of many cases where they were overtorqued and they WILL break.

No I got new ones and are torqued to spec.i just think the main difference is whether you’re reusing the bearing or not, despite the new bolt. Unless it means putting the old stretch bolt back in then it wouldn’t be necessary. But I recall you can’t reuse bolts once stretched or you’re not supposed to manual wouldn’t indicate that.

Also someone said that tensioner puller to block bolt isn’t even tty.

There’s been plenty of bolts from kits like this where they cheap on the bolt, it gets overtorqued and sheers relatively quickly a few days later under load.

I can’t find a list with that part number for that bolt either... like it only comes with a new balancer lol

Most important step is cleaning the piss out of those covers and throwing the sticker on!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190529/87fa7f1de6332ecd4570104756d652a0.jpg

I used brake clean and zwo with Scott shop towels, I think black stuff was just the plastic coming off, and dawn with a little bristle brush
