So I finally got around to replacing my slightly damaged hpfp today. I was putting everything back together and one of the bolts stripped out. I had the stud kit from DAP and went back and forth between getting a helicoil and just installing the stud kit and picking up the threads below the stripped portion. After buying all the helicoil supplies I ended up just going the stud route. The studs went well past the thread engagement section that the stock bolts catch. But I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get the pump on the studs and past that rigid coolant line. So I ended up using one stud in the stripped hole and reusing the stock bolts in the other two. I hate that it's like that but it was the only way I could figure out how to get it back together. How do you guys with the stud kit reassemble everything?

Also, I noticed when I was taking it apart that the studs were coming out instead of the nut coming off the stud. I'm assuming people put loctite on the studs but they didn't show that on the Shopdap install video so I didn't. In fact it looked like he just finger tightened the studs.

The whole thing turned into a big cluster and 1 hour job turned into 5 hours with a run into town for supplies. I never want to check my cam follower again. This is what it looked like after 10k.121536121537

Just helicoil the holes. It's easy.

I just did all 3 of mine for peace of mind.

Thought about it but I'm concerned I'll drill them crooked or something and mess it up even worse.

On the bright side follower is just starting to wear so one every 10-15k works

Thought about it but I'm concerned I'll drill them crooked or something and mess it up even worse.Take the timing cover off and do it. I placed it flat on a table and it helped make sure i drilled straight.

It's tougher to tap it straight. But i used the table again for an easy 90 degree angle to work with.

Then you can replace your oil control rings with the new plastic ones while youre at it.

I bought this guide (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0181RB8M2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) yesterday so next time I check my cam follower I can maybe install the helicoils without removing the cam chain cover.

I heli-coiled one of the three on mine...can't recall which....about 4 years ago and have never had a problem since. I replace my follower every 12k so probably 6 changes. I think the key is to push the pump into place with your hand so there is no stress on the bolts when you screw them in initially. Then I just snug them up with the pressure of the fuel pump spring engaged.
