View Full Version : Belt Squeak, Cold motor. Who's Had Experience?

Hey guys, my 2.0t has a squeak for 5 or so minutes after cold start. Only really squeaks for that long if i let it idle that long, squeaks less if I drive closer to start up and completely goes away after a couple minutes of driving. After a few minutes it's gone. I suspect the serpentine belt or a pulley needs replacing. I'll do the belt for sure but I was wondering if the belt tensioner or idler pulley are common points of failure. Haven't had a chance to look at it yet, just seeing what others have experienced. Thanks!

I used to have such a squeak but fixed after replacing the serpentine belt. Try spraying WD-40 on the serpentine belt and see if the chirping goes away.

I'd bet it's a bad pulley.

I had the same problem under warranty and I think they replaced the tensioner pulley and it went away.

Timing belt pulley. Oil residue from valve gasket. Once warmed it goes away. Apparently common issue.

I had a cold start squeak with no oil leaks.

Replace both the serpentine belt idler, and tensioner.

And I am ready to bet, none of these but the dampner built onto your crankshaft pulley is shot.
Replace the crankshaft pulley

If you are going to replace the tensioner and pulley, when the belt is off it may not be a bad idea to run the engine without the belt off to make sure it's not from the timing belt pulleys.

PhilIf it helps, the car is low mileage at only 83xxx KM. Do you think the dampner would fail that early on? Seems unlikely to me, but i'm here to learn!

Wont be surprised but there is an easy way to check: remove bottom plastic pan and using white pencil like wite-out, put a line across the dampner.
Drive couple days and after check if your line still aligned, If not, dampner is shot

wouldn't that change where your TDC mark is too on the pulley ? or am i thinking about this all wrong ?

I had a similar situation, I replaced the belt and tensioner but squealing continued, turned out to be the PCV valve....
With the car on see if you can remove the oil cap if it's hard then it's your PCV valve .
At least that's what turned out to be my issue, my two cents worth

When I was replacing my vc gasket in Dec 2016 I pulled the timing belt cover just enough for some wiggle room and saw some oil residue on the idler, a very thin film but noticeable and managed to wipe off as much as I can. The idler is located pretty deep down from top so I stuck a stick wrapped with a paper towel and clean what I could as it was rolling. After the work is done I started the car and the noise went away for many months during cold starts, but unfortunately it has come back. As mentioned, couldn't get all the residue off the idler/roller and around its vicinity due to the timing cover. I am pretty sure that is the culprit. Dealer once diagnosed the noise under warranty but couldn't pinpoint the cause. They replaced the serpentine belt but that did not help, at least I got a brand new belt. I am planning to tackle the timing belt/water-pump (soon) so all the associated internals will be replaced and hopefully that will fix it for good.

Sure would be nice if I could just wipe it off and be squeak free! Tensioners and idlers are decently pricey haha.

That exact roller in that picture with the red arrow pointing at it is trashed on the engine I just bought. It was new 25k miles ago I think? Either way the VC could leak OR the CPS could be leaking through the oring seal. My current engine has that issue. Replaced the sensor and no more leaks. Though you could just replace the oring and be good.

I used to get that problem every year. dealer would tighten the timing belt tensioner. Also I second changing the serpentine belt. It's cheap and easy. Mine got glossy as heck and is making noises again.
