As the subject states. What are the steps for increased performance from simple/cheapest to most expensive? Would a CAI be the 1st and what improvement would it give? Thanks in advance.

That's just to hear the whine but
You'll want to jump right to stage 2 or dual pulley
Then get an intake

If you are looking to gain power without breaking the bank, I always recommend going Stage 1 first. APR's Stage 1 ECU tune adds over 120hp and 100ft/lbs without any other supporting modifications required. If you are looking for more power than that, we offer our XLR8 single and dual pulley kits which can get you just shy of 500hp! From there, APR's Ultracharger and CPS is your piece de resistance for huge power while maintaining daily driveability. Throw their DL501 TCU tune in the mix and you will have access to a great torque curve and great sound!
Speaking of sound, I would recommend going with AWE's cat-back exhaust system as their fit and finish is top quality and they sound phenomenal!
Feel free to PM me with any questions and I would be more than happy to help. All of the parts I mentioned above are in stock and ready for same day shipping!
Happy Modding!

APR Stage 1 works. The only issue is the engine makes more power up top and the TCU causes the transmission to shift early. This can be skirted by either a TCU tune that APR doesn't yet offer or going into the VCDS and turning off the automatic upshift for the TCU.
A lot of folks here say the dual pulley causes a lot of heat and recommends you drop more money on cooling. From studying the APR graphs it looks like the dual pulley offers more torque sooner, perfect for making a porky car move off the line. There is a cost in the top rev range, but it's all about how you want it to feel.
I will be going with a Stage 2 Single pulley and the VCDS option until APR releases their TCU tune. I like torque and find that in the traffice that I am always in, blipping the throttle in a Stage one car is enough for you to smack into the guy in front of you anyway.
Remember the costs for the APR are inclusive. So Stage 2 will cost me $2700 CAD and Stage 1 is $1350 CAD. Since I have Stage 1, Stage 2 will cost me an additional $1350.

If you go dual pulley then you should probably go with new cats, downpipes, intercooler, and air filter to accommodate the additional engine heat and stress. One thing I've noticed is that Audi engines hold their heat in pretty well, which is great for the winter but bad for adding additional power. From what I've seen, most of the S4/5 guys upgrade cats, downpipes, intercooler, and air filter in order to limit heat soaking and prevent any damage.
As far as steps for getting more performance, that depends on the person. Most people work their way up; they start stage 1, then go to stage 2, and then they get board and go dual pulley. They add whatever mods are required for their particular stage. Most people also add an exhaust (AWE or custom are the most popular) for some sound to match the performance, and do the cooling mods I listed above. Additionally people tend to add springs/coil-overs (often for looks) and some different chassis bracing and etc. These would increase handling significantly. It all really depends on how much you have to spend, what you want to do with your car (drag racing type builds, or autocross type builds, or builds for looks, or a little bit of everything). Most important thing is that you build the car for you, and have fun with it! Enjoy!

Simple / cheap is a piggy back tune. Plug n play doesn't void warranty. If I recall chipwerke is the company. If you gonna do it just go stage 2 like mentioned above.

I get it, but I'm in Canada where I can't drive the car hard in the winter and I don't really want a louder car. Right now it makes minimal noise and looks very docile which allows me to overtake the guy with the sports car who doesn't want to let me in on the highway because after the car is on it, it's too late.
The car has a predicted lifespan and then will go bye bye because I will replace it. Given the lack of good gas available in Canada, Stage 2 with pulley is probably the limit without major surgery.

No. Only for the S-tronic 7 speed.
