Hello,
Please excuse my ignorance when it comes to wheels. I Had a set of Braid wheels (originally on a Golf) that I bought used and have used them for my winter wheels for many years. One has cracked, and I cannot replace it, it is not a style they make anymore. I was at the junkyard yesterday and a set of BBS CH (I think) wheels were there for $100. All I know for sure are they are 17" and they claim the came off an '07 A3. I drive an '08 A4 that has factory 17" wheels, will they fit?
Thanks!

Bolt pattern and center bore should be ok. Offset is probably going to be the deciding factor.

Check the offset, but mostly just need to test fit them, I bought some 17" B7 Passat Wheels to try for winters and even though the bolt/hub/ET all matched up, the spoke shape design was thick at the back and wouldn't clear the A4 front brakes without spacers.

Isn't offset marked on a wheel usually? If I'm in the 35-45 range that would be good most likely?

Should be on the back. 35-45 has a good chance of clearing everything. Even better if it’s 8 inches wide or less.
Offset should be on the back of the wheel.

17" 5x112 CHs are fairly rare. They should be 17x7.5 et42 and say CH023 between the spokes. Those would fit like stock wheels on a B7A4. Or the 5x112 17x8.5 et35 CH003 that would be fairly aggressive on the A3, but be very nice on an A4.

My winter wheels are 18x8 Passat CC wheels and while the offset and whatnot are perfectly within range for fitting our cars, the spokes were so tight <1mm that they actually contacts the brake caliper and wore away tiny grooves on the wheel spokes. Nothing unsafe so I'm not concerned but I'll need spacers (or larger S4 brakes!!) to ensure fit when the pads are new.
So going by specs is great but you'll never know 100% until you slap them on.

A little more inspection and what I really have is BBS RK 17x8 +35. Thinking I'm good but will try a test fit before the Nokians are mounted. They seem light, hope they hold up to the Michigan roads and rally races I work at.

Charles has the real answer. You buy a wheel that has a good chance of fitting but be prepared to have to buy a spacer.
I’m running a 18x8 47 ET B8 wheel and it barely clears the upright and brakes but clears. When the sidewall flexes it rubs the upright without a spacer. Make sure you also factor in tire size because a fat tire adds a few MM and can mean the difference between needing a spacer to clear the upright or not.
You’ve got a good shot at them just bolting up with a 35 ET though. Post pics when you mount them 😀

It should be good to go. Even if you have to buy a spacer that's a fairly common thing. Just remember to get hubcentric wheel spacers and extended lugs over 5mm.

I am actually worried about the tires. They are 235, so I'm not sure if they fit on 17x8....

Depends on the sidewall height. What’s the full measurement of the tire? 235/??/17... 235 width is good for 8 inch wide rim.

That’s stock size. They’ll be fine.

Did a quick test fit and there is plenty of room. Please ignore my dirty car with bad paint, I'll get that fixed after my transmission. I have a near perfect blue fender sitting around to replace that rust hole one when I can pay for the paint.
