Hi folks.

I have a 2015 A7 facelift TDi SLine Black Edition (Irish car). I have attached the options code list that is in the spare wheel well and I've also pasted the descriptions for the cars options codes below. I can see from the options list 2 codes relating to headlights :

8IT = LED headlamps
8Q3 = Automatic headlight-range adjustment dynamic (self-adjusting while driving)

This tells me the car does not have Matrix headlights however when I am driving at night I can push the indicator stalk away from me and a white "A" with a headlight icon appears which I'm assuming means the car has High Beam Assist (the car has a camera on the windshield also). Then once i'm above a certain speed the cars full beam will switch on (I drive with lights set to "Auto"). Now here's where i'm confused. If the car detects something in the path of the light pattern it doesn't switch the full beam off, instead it dims or masks part of the beam only where the object is (say a car passing in the opposite lane or if a car overtakes me) so as not to blind other drivers and then once the object is clear from view that section of the high beam light pattern is unmasked/restored. To give an example if I am overtaken I can visually see the high beam light pattern dim around the car in front of me but full beam still illuminates the left hand side of the road fully (we drive on the left).

My confusion is I thought HBA just dimmed the full beam completely when an object was detected and partial masking of full beam is a function of Matrix LED headlights or is it just the case HBA can partially dim/mask the full beam light pattern but Matrix LED headlights do it better?

Thanks for looking :)

Wait so either the option codes for my car is wrong or someone retrofitted Matrix headlights to the car?

youre in europe, so most likely they came as an option. is it possible you're misinterpreting 8Q3 option. is "Automatic headlight-range adjustment dynamic" the same as matrix?

I think you could be right 😊 Looks like there isn't an option code that specifically says "Matrix LED headlights". I assumed there was!

OK I just asked Audi to confirm my cars options list and for the headlights section it has the following options listed:

8G4 = Matrix Beam
8IT = LED headlamps
8Q3 = Automatic headlight-range adjustment dynamic (self-adjusting while driving)

... so I wonder why 8G4 is missing from the options sticker!?

Those look like Matrix headlights which is fairly common in Europe, do you have the dynamic sweep turn signals in the front?

Yes actually front and rear. Would that be a give away for Matrix headlights?

Pretty much, the dynamic turn signal for the front is only on the OEM Audi Matrix lights.

Put the light switch to parking light only, not auto, not low beam. Have someone else start the car for you and you should see this start up sequence on the inner set of lights. I did it in a parking structure so the low beams would have came on, the sequence seems to only happens on start up not when you turn on the lights as far as I can tell.

No worries, there are some aliexpress lights for the 6 cars that mimic the housing and dynamic turn signal. I don't think they would try to mimic actual Matrix dimming based on the camera feed. Never searched to see if the 7 has the same aliexpress options or not but lighting is a safety thing and certain mods should be approached cautiously.

Raf_s7 is in the UK and has Matrix lighting in case you need to compare notes on functionality. I need to find a European owner's manual with Matrix functionality described.

If you have dynamic front indicators, that’s matrix. If not, you have the standard LED headlights.

Well @widebodyfx's you are spot on! My cars lights do the little dance on start-up if lights are set to parking but I could not record it properly as I don't seem to be able to switch off the DRL's.... Oh well. At least I know for certain my car has Matrix LED headlights. Cheers all 🙂

You guys are lucky in the EU. Here in the USA they have only just got rid of candles. No matrix, no amber turn signals and no laser.

Matrix is possible now on facelift 6 and 7 cars. Expensive retrofit. [:p]

I was referring to stock bought cars in the USA. Anything can be done aftermarket with enough money. It’s a shame that the high tech USA get the low tech crap that everybody else got years ago.

Dynamic indicators are the easiest identifier for matrix headlights.

Owners Manual doesn’t say much:

Thank you! I've been using the stalk forward on start up in the evenings to have the matrix stuff. Have seen it come on a few times but it doesn't really come on in the city very often where I'm at 90% of the time.
