Ok boys,

My mom really likes the B6 A6's and personally i have a 97 A4 1.8t 5spd Quattro. I'm wonder what was a good year for the A6's and she probably will end up with the 3.0. I would like to know what is the going price for a 3.0 sedan with Tip and what are some common problems with the motor. I know little to none about the A6's so please fill me in.

Anyone? I checked on KBB and they are saying 2002 loaded $21,855 for 2004 $29,495! Sounds resonable? I wish my mom could drive stick a 6spd would be heavenly!

I'd suggest you ask the same question over on Audiworld in the A6 forums, lots more action over there for A6s. Also, check prices on edmunds.com instead of KBB. I think it gives you a more realistic picture of what to expect to pay, depending on whether you are buying from a dealer or private party. The prices you quoted seem way way too high. I recently traded in my A4 for a 2002 A6 2.7T fully loaded, w/ sport package, and 66,000 miles. I think my price was around $22k, which still was on the high side, but that's what you can expect from a dealer. For a 3.0, you should easily be able to get something for $20k or less in 2002.

Thanks dparnas! I though those prices seemed alittle high! I think what i'm gonna do is go to a new local European Car private dealer and ask him to take me to an auction! I hear there are some mad deals to be had at auctions! Thanks for the help again dparnas!

I'd suggest you convince here to go with something other than 3.0. She doesnt have to love power but it can be useful when you need to get out of the way in a hurry. Or get going when a light turns green so the ppl behind you can make it too

or just b/c its loads funner!!!!

BTW.. the chassis designation for the A6 is "C" ex.. C5, C6.

The 6 is a heavy car, so if she is looking at the V6, then you want to be looking at the 2002 and up 3.0L's. Its a good engine and is not too doggy in that car. The 2001 and under all have the 2.8L which is too small for that car. The 4.2L are going ot be VERY expensive, but if you can get her to got for a 2.7T then that is a fun and fast car. Its the same Bi-Turbo set up that is in the B5 S4 and the ONLY A6 that came in a manual transmission. The 2002's and up have upgrades on the interior and exterior that are minor, but still make the older ones look really dated in comparison. Any blue book value that is listed is going to be higher than what things are actually selling for.

I agree... the A6 is very heavy so go for the 2.7T or 4.2l. The V8 is smooth and powerful but I find the 2.7T more appealing. it is loads of fun, love the turbos.. and very easy to modify. I got mine in October 05, was a year old with 40k miles for $28000. I look for each opportunity I can get to drive it....

25hp doesn't make all that much of a difference. The 2.8 IMO is more proven and less problematic than the 3.0

25hp its Very big difference.

Every time when people doing something with their cars, does not matter what brand, its always a battle for Horse power, trust me if do any mod that will give you at least 5hp you will feel the difference, the gain in 10hp in any racing is considered very nice gain, plus for the car with the same body , c5, it will make a difference, to see it you need to put both cars on a drag strip, the point why you dont feel the difference in the a6 , is because its a luxury sedan, luxury comes first[:D] [up] , my a6 is fast, but i can barelly hear the engine....i need exhaust....

I got my 2002 A6 3.slow with TIP and Q for 23,800. It only had 26k miles, and was a weeked driver, so for that milage, I think I got a really good deal. The only thing is that it does NOT have the premium package, which now that I look back on it, realize its something I should have looked for. Even more so is the fact that I wish I would have gotten the 4.2 for the body style flare differences. I love the 4.2 look, and only so-so like the 3.0 or 2.7t. Ohh well, live and learn.
