View Full Version : C7 A6 ZF8 TCU Tune

Hey everyone,
I am looking for a TCU tune for my A6 to hopefully get some good times in a 1/4. I have seen some people on here with various tunes from EPL to custom tunes using an HP Tuner.
I would need a stand alone tuner as I am on APR Tuning, upgrading to Stage 2+ very soon with some other items. I know EPL doesn't do stand alone and I have heard rumors of IE having a tune for it but cannot locate anything.
Any help would be great. I messaged a couple people about their personal tunes but have heard nothing back.

Melen2120 and p3u are enthusiasts who know how to tune the ZF8 with HP Tuners. They get hand spanked for mentioning anything on the forums and not being forum sponsors.

That's good to know, thanks FX! I have read through some of the forums and seen both of their names come up. Hopefully they can help.

I am not positive, just something I heard from a buddy of mine. He has the IE tune on his S4 and while this is a different transmission he mentioned he thought they had one for the ZF8.
Also, the launch control functioning and the pops and crackle tune from IE sounds great on his S4 with the AWE Track Exhaust.

I feel like the crackle tune on the A6 won’t look right lol.

EPL does offer stand alone TCU tune, but I think it’s $699 vs $499 for EPL customers

Haha, yeah, I'd have to agree. It may work a little better if the car was modified aesthetically, not just stock.

Interesting, I did not realize that, I saw something about it on their spring promotion but I figured I was reading it wrong. I wonder what the prerequisites are for it. I will have to look a bit more into it. Hopefully I have already found a better route with Mr. P3U.

@Krwalkman,
Did you ever get a TCU tune? EPL will do for $699 and $169 for adapter (I have APR Stage I on my c7.5). Just wonder what your thoughts are on whichever you chose.
Thanks!

Have you seen the issues on their S4 tranny tune? I wouldn’t even look at their tranny tunes unless you want a new tranny

The S4 has a DSG while the A6 uses an automatic, these are completely different transmissions. The S4 tranny tune has no bearing on the A6 tranny tune.

Yeah but it has everything to do with that IE puts out a shity problematic tune and then doesn’t revisit

For those of you who went with Berk’s tune, can you describe (1) your stage/upgrades, (2) impression as to changes in D and (3) changes in sport / manual?
I’d like my D mode to shift at slightly higher RPM, and for sport and manual to shift at much higher RPMs, but insanely fast ( call it crazy race car mode).

CREC stage 1 with AFE filter / JHM throttle body hose. D mode shifts at 6800 rpm, firmer shifts with faster shifting. D is much willing to downshift than stock. Overall the experience feels like how the transmission should have been from the factory. Factory felt like econo mode and would never downshift. S mode is all out racecar. S is very aggressive and shifts at 7200 rpms. The thing is that Berk will walk you through options and customize your tune depending on what you're looking for. He's very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience with the platform.

Stock trans tuning is just awful.
I feel like I'm requesting shifts when I should be commanding them.
I think I'm really just a manual type guy, and can't handle auto trans software. I don't like anything between me and the car, it dulls the experience.

How quickly does the trans respond when you ask for a downshift?
For example: you're in drive, moving along nicely and a nice curve comes up and traffic starts to slow. I like to reach for a paddle and go from 6th to 3rd, so a quick three pulls, but stock shifting is sooo sloooow.
I find this car has tremendous inertia in the drivetrain, simply doesn't slow down when you let off the gas.
My e90 6-speed was far easier to manage in this respect, and I find I have to ride the brakes A LOT in the Audi, EVEN when I downshift. She just doesn't slow.

What is required for a tune?
I don't have a windows laptop, a battery tender, or a driveway....but I'm seriously tempted.

Loaded windows 10 on my Mac; no problems so far. I’ll download HP tuner software but I won’t really know what’s what until the HP unit arrives and I try to read the car. Assuming, however, the software works on Win 10, that’s a great sign. I’ve read many others do the same.

Questions for those in the know. How many credits do you need for the TCU tune? Can you buy the credits from anywhere or only people who sold you the tuner or HP Tuners themselves?? Does anybody use other features on the tool?
TIA

Mine is set to arrive on Friday. I need a laptop, but could borrow one. I don’t trust mine as it randomly turns off and my work ones are locked down.
So oil change on Thursday maybe tune on the weekend and maybe track the Sunday after.
There is a road course and a quarter mile track at the same location. In the past we were paying to spectate at the dragstrip and then observing both tracks.
So now there is no spectators due to COVID. So maybe register my car to 1/4 mile race, run it and spectate at both courses anyway.
All other friends in the car will enter as pit crew for the A6 to…hold my drink. Maybe throw cold drinks at the factory HX as well.

First version of Berk’s TCU installed. It’s a bit more aggressive in D, shifting at about 6.8k when floored, but the great thing is it generally shifts at higher rpm than before if you’re at 60-80% throttle and just pulls a bit more without being “rough”. Its very aggressive is S with shifts at about 7.15k and roughly 7.2k in M.
Love using the power up top.

Did you guys have a lot of custom tuning done to your ZF8?
So far, I’ve taken Berk's starting file "as is" and it’s so much better than stock for my tastes. I’m able to use more of the RPM range and the car is more willing to stay in lower gears under medium throttle just a bit longer than before the tune, making the car more drivable and more fun.
Are you all working on shift timing, line pressures, earlier downshifts, etc…? Or, are you all just focused on using the higher RPMs and later shift points?

I'm still on my first version of Berk's tune as I really don't have anything I'd like to have changed. Based on the feedback I gave him and a description of my driving habits and needs, he suggested only changing the shift schedules in D mode, to keep it comfortable but hold a gear longer, downshift more readily, and increase WOT shift to 6800 rpm. Night and day difference in typical boring commuting situations, no more bogging and refusing to downshift but maintained the smooth shifting.
Obviously the changes he made to S and M modes were significant; he changed amax settings, torque and stall limits, shift speed and firmness, WOT shift at 7200 rpm, and it does a rev-match when downshifting which I don't think it did in the stock configuration (at least not noticeably)

Based on your descriptions, I'd bet our revised TCUs are very similar. It's like stage 1 all over again in terms of bump in performance just from being in the right gear most of the time!! I'll do cooling and stage 2 the second my APR/Audi warranties expire. Alas, I'm "stuck" on stage 1 until then.
