View Full Version : Oh no...engine noise.

My '13 S4 has just over 110K miles. Running an errand this afternoon, I had the transmission in S mode. Got off the traffic line quick as usual, but then after the next light, I had what seemed to be no supercharger. Power was dramatically lower and it also seemed like the engine was running hotter as well. I got home and checked under the hood; nothing noticeable except for a new noise (not the usual valve tapping noise) - this noise was worse. The engine has run like a champ - I've had the car for a few years and put over 70K miles on it - religious with the maintenance.

I'm taking it to the shop for an analysis sometime this week, but I'd value any thoughts/suggestions, etc. Thanks.

Any CELs ? Bypass failed ? stays stuck = no boost

Crankshaft pulley maybe? Were the belts spinning when you looked at the engine bay? Any overheating?

What is the noise...

Rodizzle: Zero check engine lights; there is definitely an absence of boost - the car is running like an '87 Taurus...
jsh139: Pulleys at the front of the engine were turning. The engine did overheat slightly, then went back to the middle, then overheated again, only to cool down - water pump? But that wouldn't explain the loss of boost.
Morritse: Noise sounds like small fragments of metal are rattling about - I immediately shut off the engine and am driving my spares :/

Thanks!

Water pump? Thermostat? Bypass valve? You may wish to scan for soft codes ...?

Can you isolate the metal fragment noise? Is it in the Supercharger or maybe farther down?

Been buried all week but I'll hook my OBD to see what there is, if anything...honestly I think it's my supercharging unit given the sudden drop of power - we'll see after I tow it in to someone with marked more experience than I in Tucson next week.

This wouldn't be the worst, to be honest. Blowers aren't terribly expensive. Might as well just buy a ported case and drop your electronics and intercoolers into it :)

Update: Problem caused by delamination of the crankshaft pulley...apparently a semi-regular issue with these cars. At least the supercharger is still good.

I'll get her back on Monday. Thanks for the feedback./azwildcat/

B - I - N - G - O !

Belts were spinning, or so I thought. Under acceleration though, zero boost. Thanks jsh139.

Common problem with our cars. Mine went at 86K, but was more obvious. Lost power steering and engine temp crept above the middle mark because none of the accessories were running due to the belt shredding itself. Looked like black spaghetti in the engine compartment.

Glad you got it figured out!
