Hey Guys,

Some time ago (7 months now!) I became the proud owner of a 2009 Audi S4 B8, with the 3.0l V6 supercharged. Been loving driving the car and enjoy every single minute of it.

Recently i've been looking at tuning the car, and have been weighing up my options.

Given I live in Western Australia, and the average temperature in summer here is about 35C (Max temperatures peaking into the 45C range, *PS for you old hatters that like to go against the norm.... that's 95F average, peak being around 115F), it's going to be hard to push the supercharger to the limit here, so i've been contemplating what sort of tune to get keeping in mind those max temps etc. In terms of fueling 98RON (is about equal to 93 over in the ole US of A) is all i'll be using as that's readily available and E85/E10 is fairly hard to get here.

I have already purchased a mercracing HX, and have done the old silicon intake + k&n filter + drilling out factory box ready for some tune upgrades.

I've decided in terms of ease of purchase to go with EPL, getting a Stage 2 DP tune, and DSG Tune (when they release it for my box), and use a CTS supercharger pulley and CTS 180mm crank pulley. Reason for choosing the 180mm pulley is purely because of ambient heat and IATs will be high thus going for a 187mm is not going to be helpful at all and even 183mm might not be good either.

Now for some additional questions:

Autotech HPFP upgrade. Is this going to be needed considering i won't even be bothering to look at Exx fuels? Does it help with 98RON/93 fueling options?
Will i need to look at upgrading the LPFP?

A few other questions i have are also related to maintenance.

I'm looking at replacing the T-Stat, Water pump, and PCV valve. Any other parts that i should be looking at to replace while the supercharger is off?

Also if possible if anyone knows the part numbers for any additional items/parts list for doing the above work that'd be absolutely awesome too!

Thanks
m0n

Water/meth injection will do wonders for your IATs. I’d suggest plumbing it into your HX and NOT tuning for the extra bit of octane it gives you, its a kind of an insurance you’ll want to have if you run out of mixture

Upgraded HX, but also add the secondary pump.
And yeah meth if you want to.

Thanks for the advice guys. not sure i really do want to go water/meth injection. I might get some plumbing rigged up to at least spray water onto the HX when needed.

I did talk to Chris@EPL and have followed his advice.

I've purchased the EPL supercharger pulley, and have changed to a fluidamper 183mm crank pulley which i got from EPL.

Now the long wait for all the parts to arrive! :P

Someone i chat to just raised a fairly valid question.

Catchcans. Do you guys run them in Dual Pulley setups? Are they a requirement for this platform?

Ok, so rather than start a new thread i'll continue to use this one.

Recently had Stage 1 from EPL installed. No pulleys or anything just yet as Chris wanted me to start using the Stage 1 tune now so that i have something i guess and then when i've got all the parts done he'll release the stage 2 DP tune.

I also purchased a DSG tune but as my car is Australian delivered, and it's got different software etc, they are still developing the TCU tune for it.

I'm having 2 issues at the moment.

1) When i'm on the throttle hard or past 5krpm the car seems to change up a gear, cut power for 0.5-1s and then get back on it. The extra power from the tune is DEFINITELY there i can definitely feel that, but there's just this massive delay, almost like a manual and someone is bang shifting it, and missing the gate a couple of times then getting it in on the second attempt.
To troubleshoot i've:
a) checked vcds and no issues in there
b) replaced spark plugs with NGK PFR8S8EG and gapped them to 0.026 as per chris' advise.
c) got new coil packs for all 6 cylinders.
d) changed fuel (both Shell and BP Ultimate are 98 ron, they are roughly equivelant to 93.... .ROUGHLY). I haven't tried topping up with E85 to give it a bit more pep, but i'm not seeing misfires or knocks?

2) The other issue, which kinda ties in with 1) is that with VCDS alot of functions aren't working. Since getting the car i've come up to the service interval and i've done the major stuff that needs to be done at this mileage
a) Oil has been changed and filter replaced.
b) Checked for leaks.
Issues:
c) tried to service reset using the SRI reset. Does not work? Used the Fixed long service oil Rest of the World setting in the drop down menu. (this reset the MMI but not the ding when starting the car)
d) tried to go into Instruments Adaptation and Service Reset and set the value to 0. Still ding when starting the car!
c) to try and see if the DSG needs an adaptation, i've tried going through the DSG clutch adaptation and on the erase Start/Stop function i keep getting "Error: Parameter out of Range". Transmission temp is @ 45-58. Foot is on the brake pedal.

I'm starting to get really annoyed with this car as it seems like it's a half baked 2g/3g mmi thing with a whole load of other 1st gen /old gen stuff from the much better 2011+ models, and none of the guides EVER seem like they are the same with the VCDS.

Is anyone able to help or provide some advice at all on what i can do?

Really want to get the DSG adaptation and the SRI reset done, but for the life of me no matter what i do i can't seem to get either function to work.

Surely there's someone that may have an idea for me around the VCDS issues?

What can i do to get logs/anything to figure out why basic things like the SRI reset aren't working?

Do i have to have a workshop id in place for these procedures to work?

Hopefully, you can seek the help you need with VCDS on the Ross-Tech forum (https://forums.ross-tech.com). Uwe Ross and his team are the best resources to help you with issues you're facing with the SRI reset and logging on your S4. He also offers worldwide support, so is either likely familiar with the idiosyncrasies of the "early" B8 S4s (USA got them starting in 2010), or has contacts or resources that can assist you.

Let us know if you reach out to his team (he and his team are very responsive, as long as you're using a genuine Ross-Tech cable and not some cheap knock-off. Let u know if that helps and if you successfully resolve the issues you've been experiencing. Good luck!

Thanks Lykuno!

I'm already registered on the ross-tech forum, i just thought this might be a much better place to ask since it's audi s4 specific. But you may be right, there may be some weird idiosyncrasies with the early versions of the B8. Honestly if i knew i'd have gotten some half baked 2g/3g MMI and i'd have so many issues with the VCDS... i'd have purchased a later model :(

Would anyone know what sort of logging in VCDS I can do to troubleshoot the power loss changing gears?

I now have a DSG tune and it seems to only do it in 1-2 when on the throttle hard (eg rpm's go up beyond 4k, and the car shifts from 1st to 2nd). Any other shifts it's perfect. Traction control has been disabled (hold ESP button down for 5 seconds until ASR and ESP are disabled) when attempting this too, happens in both auto and manual mode.

I'm now wondering if it's timing/fuel related.

Here is a good thread on data logging with VCDS
