I believe I need a new battery. Car is not a daily driver. Had to jump it on Sunday. Drove it around for a while to get it fully charged. Went to start it this morning and it’s dead again so I jump it. Fired up but car had no power from the accelerator whether in drive or reverse. So at this point I’m blocking my street unable to move. After throwing my back out trying to push it up the driveway to no avail, it finally occurred to me to shut it off and restart it. Well as luck would have it that worked and I was able to pull it back up and into the driveway and take my Jeep to work.

Would a bad battery cause these issues? What is a good replacement? Don’t really feel like spending a fortune at the dealer. Will a new battery need to be coded? Thanks folks.

Yes, dead battery can cause all kinds of gremlins in our cars. In the search function, Type "battery coding" and "battery replacement" and limit your search to B8 S4 forum, and you will have a ton of info on the subject.

Your Battery is on life support. You should be able to get one for a good price at Auto Zone or Advanced Auto. (around $150). I never recoded my battery when I got a new one and had no issues.

2011 I’m assuming it’s the original battery.

Did you check how much is the OEM at the dealer? I changed mine beginning of winter and it cost around 200$ cdn, which is the same price as the generics. If the case why go through the trouble?

Don't go too long with a bad battery as you can dramatically reduce the life of your alternator. I learn this the hard way. The alternator will work overtime trying to charge it and will end up burning out.

I have not but if that’s the case it’s a no brainer. Where you located?

That’s the battery I replaced mine with a few months ago. Didn’t code anything and all has been well.

I called my local Audi dealership and was quoted $200-300. Needed vin number to give me exact amount which I didn’t have on hand. I think I’ll go that route. They wanted one hour labor for installation and coding lol. Did you recode your new battery?

Yes, I did record the battery with VCDS. Some say they didn't and works fine, I say why do the job half way, if you have the tool do it the right way.

My battery died several times before I replaced it and I have some issues now because I think it needs a code. I guess the car goes into some sort of low-power mode when you let the battery die. I believe I need a vcds to reset this

I’ve never heard of battery coding prior to now. What does it entail?

Many have not had to deal with battery coding following replacement, however, this Ross-Tech YT video may be informative:

When I replace my battery I was just pro-active, since the battery is already 6 years and my full charge won’t exceed half of the battery meter. So when I swapped the new fully charged battery, my battery meter still indicating half way. However, after recoding the meter shows full scale. Apparently, if you don’t recode the battery, the computer still have the old battery memory on system and won’t charge efficiently, eventually shortened the life of the new battery. Might not notice any problem short term, but eventually have issues on the long run.

Should you recode, just change one digit. The car only needs to know that there's a new battery in the system so it can redo it's tests for optimal charge and discharge. Don't worry about the BEM code. It's not like the car is network connected and can verify the BEM code and charge to a set spec. It'll figure it out on it's own as long as you let it know it's a new battery.

I have a crazy problem I can't figure out. When I changed my battery after it super died (wouldn't jump) my display went out and I can't get it back on, no way to reset it. I don't have MMI. I guess I need a VCDS cable. I have no radio and can't access any function of the car (can't even set the clock) I'm driving in the dark ages over here lol

Bought an oem battery from the dealer. To my surprise, both the old and new batteries are lead acid not agm. Replaced it without recoding and all is well.

Well, glad you're happy with the replacement. I think you got your money's worth out of the original battery, which depending on your car's build date, was at probably at least 8 years old.

It was stamped 10/11 so nearly 8 years old. Had I kept it on a tender over the winter while not driving the car it would still be alive I'm sure.

For sure not coding will work no problem, The question is will it work at it’s optimal, will the battery life affected on long term?
Like I said, not coding my battery, the battery meter on the dashboard was only half, which it supposed to be full. I need to code to get the meter right indication.

Well. If you don't have a VCDS tool its fairly difficult to re-code the battery. And if it works just fine without re-coding,why bother unless you have issues.

Can I use Carista to recode for new battery?Nope.

I have vcds and vcp and I think both of those do it but my carista doesn't. I've definitely seen it on vcds
