Took my '03 allroad tip to the local audi guru for an APR tune. I'd just installed downpipes so I wanted to go stage 2 and delete sai if possible. Come to find out apr no longer does "vintage" engine tunes aside from their stage 1 cookie cutter one size fits all tune. This shop also does eurodyne and they sold me on this due to it's more customizable tuning per application. Then I got the call that the ecm was zapped and they couldn't recover it. I work in the marine industry and have to reflash ecm's too so I know this shit happens. It sucks but I'm not mad. They've sent the ecm off to eurodyne to hopefully be recovered and the base tune put on there. Has anyone ever had experience with a zapped ecm? What are my chances of recovery, and if it's smoked can I get a used ecm and delete the imo so I only need the ecm or will I need the key and pin?

This is all APR ever offered for this application. although I would have thought they had a stage 2 but still they never offered SAI deletes and certainly nothing custom for these (or anything). Wouldn't surprise me if the stage 1 just had the P420 dtc "disabled" and would have just worked fine with your downpipes.

They either used the wrong file or it crashed while flashing (these usually don't crash), not sure what zapped would be.
Unfortunately these ecus suck and often don't go into boot mode so recovering them is a bear. Eurodyne will either just be recovering it via some sort of boot mode/ back door flash or you need to pull the prom off flash it with a stock file solder it back on and then you can try flashing again.
Basically 100% chance of recovery, if not the shop owes you an ecu, but you should be fine.

Is there a safer option to load a tune for our older ECUs?
Always wondered about an ECU tune but was always a bit nervous doing so. Last one I had done was in 2002/3 and that was back when you sent the ECU in to have a new chip put in.

I installed over 1000 solder type chips back in the day.
And have flashed 100s of cars.. been involved with flashing 10s of thousands.
Flashing is the safer way to do it.
