View Full Version : Night vision option in 2012 A7?

I'm looking into getting an early A7 and I'd like it to have night vision and adaptive cruise, both due to my poor night vision.
I thought both were part of the innovation package but I've seen a few used cars with the innovation package and no HUD can be seen on the dash. Was night vision and the HUD separate options or something?
Also, while searching for the answer I see that the 2012-2015 night vision doesnt detect animals or people. So what does it detect? Cars only?
Thanks.

No offence, but if you’re having to rely on these systems due to a vision impairment I don’t think you should be on the road at night (for your safety and that of others).

I can confirm that my 12 A7 has both listed under innovation pkg. not sure what the night vis detects because its been inop since I purchased the car..

Agreed. You can not rely on the night vision for driving.
A) The display is small. Only in center DIS.
B) You have to look down to see it on the tiny screen and images and distances are not accurate...not really good at night.
C) It is really only mildly useful as a minor safety aid as it does detect people and if they move into the path of the car it alerts you when it is below 77F outside.
And yes I do have the night vision option and would definitely NOT get it again.
Maybe if you travel frequently on dimly lit roads with many night joggers below 77 degrees then it could have some use.

Useless gimmic IMO. I think it might be useful if you have deer on your daily route and you drive at night but honestly it serves no purpose other than to wow you friends who have never seen it before. Particularly in TX that spends a good majority of its time over 77 degrees which renders it inoperable. Edit: Well at least the detection piece of things.

I live in rural NH so unlit roads with joggers are fairly common. Thanks for the info on the limited display.

Sounds like @burgergawd had night vision and adaptive cruise in 2012. Can anybody confirm if the night vision and heads up display are separate features in 2012? Thanks.

Interesting. I looked at a 2012 yesterday that definitely didnt have the night vision button or the dash hump for the HUD, but it had the little adjuster knob on the cruise control stalk for the adaptive cruise. I wonder if those can be had separately. From what I've seen the '12 A7 was only offered with the Innovation Package, not the separate Driver Assistance Package, but maybe that was wrong.

My 2012 has Innovatin pkg and it def included both night vision and adaptive cruise in that pkg. I’m not aware if they broke those up later in that model year.

Some one may have retrofit the adaptive CC on that one. The HUD and ACC were listed as one package on the window sticker I’ve seen from the 12-13 model years. It’s separated on the C8 now.

Night vision is pointless to me in my car. Would be great if it projected on the HUD but looking down to the dash detracts greatly from the usefulness.
ACC/radar is great though.

Our 2013 A7 Prestige has night vision. It will detect just about anything with a heat signature, cars, animals, etc. but it won't beep at you or anything it just shows up on the display. It's nice to have if you're driving through the woods at night and want to glance at it occasionally to see if there's a deer or something lurking out of site, but it's not a life changing must have option.

It's best use is for watching for deer/moose in rural areas. If you drive a lot outside the city at night then it is 100% worth it as they will fuck up your car royally if you hit them. Otherwise not so much.

Had NV on my A7, didn’t specify it on my S7.

Because it’s completely passive (there is no IR source on the camera) it’s totally reliant on the heat signature of whatever object passes into its field of view. Not an issue unless the ambient air temperature is warmer than the object, in which case it doesn’t give any warning alerts.

The biggest issue I found is that it becomes a distraction, since the picture is viewed on the DIS on the instrument panels, which distracts you from looking out the window and actually seeing where you are going....

It also only works when the car engine is running and the headlights are on, so no James Bond uses [:d]

Mine is a ‘14 and it detects people, haven’t seen animals yet. Useful for me in Winter Time cause it’s dark after 4:30pm and see people highlighted walking on sidewalks. Had it pop alert the stick figure man once or twice when it thought I was heading straight to a person. Doesn’t do well or anything in summer heat.
I still love it though, got my RS7 cause it had one of these features.

Mine is a '14 as well and it did this as well. I was driving a winding S-shaped road and it beeped and warned of a pedestrian in my path that was on the sidewalk in front of me. Obviously I wasn't going to hit them but it was a feature I didn't know existed.

For 2012, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) was available in both the Innovation Package (WPD) and the Drivers Assistance Package (PCP). HUD was only available in the WPD package. PCP didn't have HUD, Night Vision, or LED headlights, although LED headlights were available as a separate option (PX2)

ah thank you. This car had LED headlights and ACC, so they must have had the drivers assistance package and the add on LED headlights.

thanks everyone for all the opinions on night vision as well. I thought that it interacted with the HUD a little better than it seems it does, so I may look into other car options that are cheaper and easier to find.
