I have a bad knee, tired of holding the brake pedal while waiting for a traffic signal, so I did this.
No need to run wires all the way to the ABS unit from the centre console. All 4GX comes with this wiring factory installed. Nevertheless, note that this was done to 1AT PR code ABS module. If you have 1AS ABS module, it may still work, but it may stressing your ABS unit slightly more[facepalm]
DISCLAIMER
YOU DO IT UNDER YOUR RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING. NO GUARANTEE.
FYI. My ABS control unit is Part No SW: 4G0 907 379 G HW: 4G0 907 379 G Component: ESP PREMIUM H09 0250
Part required
:4g1927225b
A cheap one from Aliexpress or eBay will work.
Procedure
- lift gear shift boot cover
- lift MMI console
- Unplug parking break button connector
- replace existing with 4g1927225b
- assemble back
- get a coding tool(VCDS, VCP, ODIS-E)
Select Address 03 (ABS)
Access authorization -> Enter access code 61378
Coding -> Byte 8, Activate bit 4, 7 and deactivate bit 6.
Now, if you use VCDS, you wouldn't be able to tick a box in long coding helper.
So you need to calculate Byte 8's HEX value.
For example, my original ABS long coding is
44A70F0122E5F0804B00
and 4B near the end is Byte 8.
HEX 4B is Binary 01001011
Changing bits to 10011011
Converting binary 10011011 to HEX is 9B
So my new long coding is
44A70F0122E5F0809B00
https://www.binaryhexconverter.com/hex-to-binary-converter (hex-to-binary-converter)
DO NOT JUST PASTE MY ABS CODING TO YOUR ABS CODING.
JUST DO THE REQUIRED MATH(IT'S NOT EVEN A MATH) AND CHANGE ONLY REQUIRED VALUE.
Enter the coding and you will get immediately TPMS error.
Just restart the ignition and it should go away.
Enjoy!

Just checked and mine is 1AS with module 4G0907379S. Verified my managers vehicle is a 2016 A7 and has 1AT but same ABS module. Thoughts?

I think it's still going to work.
I see only one hardware revision for ESP9 PR for TDI whereas there has been multiple revision for my TFSI ESP PR.
I retrieved the coding from TDI anyway. Also, I don't think TDI ABS system is weak compared to TFSI considering engine weight.

Looks like the TDI does have a smaller front brake setup than the TFSI but I cant imagine it would make a difference for the mod. Initially I thought it applies the parking brake at a stop but that would require coding in 53 not 3. So at a stop it applies pressure to the front brakes?

Every Auto-Hold equipped vehicle I’ve been in applies front or both and never the parking brake. I’m sure this is no different.

I have 1AT and ACC.
As far as I know, 4g(c7) esp are all bosch's 9th generation abs module. Seems tfsi and tdi abs module get merged into one for facelifts as early tfsi modules are several. Since its technical spec is unknown for each unit we don't know exactly what's the difference between 1at and 1as, but all esp 9 are premium so i assume over heating isn't really issue like esp8 found in B8 cars.

Anyway, i know in Eu, and korea there are many cars with Auto hold without ACC.
So I assume 1as, 1at difference does not play many issue in c7.
Nevertheless I do ask more attention to cars with the factory trailer hitch as the coding above is from vehicle without trailer hitch. Auto hold is not supposed to work when there is a trailer behind.
Frankly, I do not know of detail for what bit 4,6,7 do in byte 8. Nevertheless, byte 8 stuff is known safe to work with.
I know first byte is about engine type and then trany follows but i have no idea about all other bytes and do not recommend alter it.

With this mod is the auto hold status persistent or do you have to reactivate it every time you turn the car on? In other words, will it "remember" if you had it switched on from your last drive and remain activated through a power cycle? It bothers me very much that the auto high beams are not persistent and must be reactivated every time. I am hoping this is not similar.

@wuplur
I Guess,
47 Engine Type, A7 Tranny or chassis(?), 64 Unknown, 1E Unknown, 2E Unknown, E5 Unknown but fixed, 69 few basic settings, 82 Unknown, 1B Basic settings for optional features, 00 - unknown reserved(?).
So your byte 8 is 00011011 so just turning on the bit 7. Thus 9B.

for your C7.5 RS7, there is coding to make it remember.
For C7 PFL cars, I think K-electronic or Kufatec is selling memory module for the auto hold. It's a separate in-line box for preface lifts.

- module 09-Cent. Elec.
- enter Security Code (20113)
- Adaptation on Channel 34:
subtract 4 to the value --> Start&Stop always disabled
add 32 to the value --> memorize last status (the Start & Stop status at engine startup will be the one at last engine shutdown)

Also, do you know if this allows other settings to remain persistent in the car throughout power cycles? Specifically, I have been trying since I had the car to make the auto bright function on the headlights persistent so that you don't have to toggle it on every time you get in the car.

Thank you. Other cars makes allow this setting to be persistent so I would hope Audi would too. Since the high beams are only activated when no other cars are present it is allowed, at least around these parts.

Mine came in today. Just installed and coded as Daniel said and it works great. Will test it out on my commute tomorrow.
I never had a car with auto hold before, but I thought the rear brake lights are supposed to come on when auto hold is activated? Mine turns off as soon as I let off the pedal even though the car is holding the brake. Maybe further coding is needed? Otherwise I do not see a huge difference to using the e-brake when stopped if the rear brake lights don't stay on to prevent rear end collisions.

The brake lights should stay on so maybe you’re right about further coding. Also, the auto hold should remain active at each stop unlike the parking brake. I’m still waiting for mine that should have arrived already so I can’t give any actual info.

Autohold does remain active the entire trip after being turned on. Just no brake lights.
My coding came out to the same as Daniel's after making the changes.

After further research, it looks to be common on VW/Audis for auto hold to not keep the brake lights on. The logic behind this is the brake lights just signal a change in speed, and shouldn't be necessary when at a complete stop. This is common in Europe with a majority of manual cars which drivers do not hold the brake through the entire time while stopped at a light, stop sign, etc. It also is a courtesy to not blind drivers with super bright brake lights at night when stopped.
My main concern is that while its not your legal fault if you get rear ended because of this, I still do not want to get rear-ended....
a4android
02-20-2019, 08:41 PM
Not sure if you are reliable if the rear light is not on its brightest.
The brightest brake lights indeed mean there is a change in speed.
Also, it's not like brake light goes completely off but in normal brightness when the auto hold is active.
I don't think less bright brake lights are 'go' sign for the vehicle behind you. All drivers bear the responsibility to keep the safety distance to avoid rear-end collision.
Indeed, you get fined if brake lights are turned off, but that's not the case for auto hold.
for example, in rural Canada, there are often junctions with extremely long traffic signal timing and some people put their car in parking(so the brake light goes less bright) while waiting and put the gear to drive in the green signal, and I never heard anyone gets pulled by cops for those conducts.

Yes, I agree with you. I guess most people in the USA drive automatics and keep their foot on the brake when stopped, so they are used to seeing the bright brake lights if a vehicle is stopped (even for a long time).
This is not a big issue, though mercedes, bmw, honda, etc all keep their bright brake lights on with autohold, but audi/vw does not.

Are there no other adaptations to set in the ABS module which might keep the brake lights activated?
I hate asking this but it's relevant to the install. Does anyone have tips, pointers or a procedure for lifting the shift boot and center console for access to swap out their switch? I'd like to avoid breaking plastics for this.

To lift the shift boot, just put a small screw driver between the leather boot and the edge of the plastic chrome trim. Should easily come up. Then stick your hand inside and under the back of MMI controls and pull up. The controls plate should come up. Then unplug everything and pull it out. The switches should come out through the side that faces the passengers, not out the back. There are 4-5 clips holding it in.

I grew up in old Chevy’s and on motorcycles and that was a big no-no for both. In the Chevy because the fluid was only circulating if the trans was being driven by the input shaft and on the motorcycle because you never wanted to not be ready to get the hell out of someone’s way. Neither probably apply here but old habits die hard.

On cars equipped with dual clutch transmissions there is usually something in the manual that specifically warns against this as Chiro says since the transmission is no longer being actively lubricated. I remember this section in my old MK7 GTI's manual but don't have a DSG car aside from my Alfa to check and it has a dry clutch system.

I would love to attempt this on my 14 A6 2.0t however the idea of having no breaklights on during use is a huge potential risk and hazard in a nation such as NA where people are accustomed to always on when braking. I look forward to see if anyone figures out a solution to this so we don’t have many Audi owners getting whiplash from being rear ended regardless if the person who hits you at fault.

My coding only required 1 bit to be changed since the others were already set. I felt like an idiot. Not sure why I had such a hard time with this since it’s all pretty easy. There’s a value block I found that shows how many times the access code was entered incorrectly, which was 3 so it was locked out. I just waited with the ignition on for a few minutes till it went from 3 to 0, tried it again and it went through. Changed the code and gave it a couple ignition cycles and the light at the switch wouldn’t come on. Didn’t matter if it was in P, D, with/without seatbelt buckled, and engine on/off. No faults. Verified with another value block that the switch does work. Drove it in the shop and tried again a couple times with no luck. Let it sit for awhile so I could get ready to go home and jumped in the car to go and now it’s working haha. Worked all the way home no problem.

I’ve been using it everyday and love it. It does remember from the last drive and stays on so there’s no need for me to reactivate it, I did however do the coding change months ago to remember start/stop so that’s probably why. I do have a question about the auto hold operation that I’m assuming is normal but just want to make sure. When the feature is currently active at a stop and my foot is off the brake, when it’s quiet (windows up, radio & A/C off) I can hear what I can only describe as a vacuum leak near the brake pedal area. I’ll hit the brakes and it’s gone but release and it’s back. I’m thinking this may be the automatic pressure that’s applied in the brake booster maybe but just want to see if everyone else hears it since I remember my PR code was different and want to make sure I’m not damaging the ABS module or something with this feature.

Generally, brake booster makes more or less some noise. It was more apparent in B8s.
Also, if the brake fluid reaches critical pressure or temperature, the function will not engage furthermore.
Anyway, what is bad will eventually fail like the notorious engine mount[facepalm]

After an excruciatingly long shipping time my hold button finally arrived yesterday. The retrofit of the physical button literally takes seconds once you decide you can give the shifter cover enough oomph to get the clips to give and nothing is going to break. Coding is only a minute as well but read a quick google tutorial on binary and hex coding and/or use a binary to hex converter. It’s super simple but if you know nothing about it you will get confused.
Anyways, the hold feature works flawlessly and mine does in fact remember my last setting when I get back in and restart the car.

I also did this retrofit today. On mine the TPMS system kept throwing errors (even after ignition cycle and clear DTCs) until I went and stored tire pressure; then it stopped acting up.

wuplur eventually succeeded. seems his coding was not accepted at the time because of three attempt strike. I hope he elaborates more.
Update:. The code doesn't work for me. I was able to find another one to give me security access. I only have to change one bit (7, same as wuplur) but it doesn't take. The error message I get is "Function cannot be performed mess. length or format incorrect" ( I'm using obdeleven)

So far on my C7 A6 2.0t P+ it will not accept turning off bit 6 for 7. Atleast with ODBEleven doing long coding it states the length or format is incorrect. I will try later by having ODBEleven use BIT mode instead of HEX mode. It could be the fact that I don't know the security code as the one posted here does not work on this model / module.

Yes, this somehow also activates the auto parking brake feature that many people were already enabling with coding.

So... did some tinkering this morning. I was able to get it to accept the change, I had to change the Diagnostic mode in the device. I changed it to end of Assembly line mode, and the code took. The TPMS error immediately appeared. I cycled the ignition and cleared all the codes. I can finally apply the E-Brake (I had an e-brake malfunction when I changed the part, it wouldn't apply it for some reason) Now I need to check if brake hold works. I pressed the button but the light on it didn't turn on. I'm hoping its just takes a while for the change to replicate.
Edit: I didn't use the access code that the OP used, I used 10505 (There are a few others that work. Let me know if you need some) This could be why it acting weird... I'll check again today

For me it activates the parking brake every time when entering my underground garage which is on a steep incline. That tells me that the inclination angle is the trigger.

Hi all,
I have my part coming so I haven't done any changes. How does the autohold work with the start/stop system. I'm assuming the start/stop system only works when you have enough pressure on the brake pedal. If you are at a stop with the start/stop system activated and the engine is off and then let up on the brake pedal will the engine start and still have the brake activated? Hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance

My RS7 doesn’t have start/stop but my previous MB and BMW did and they wouldn’t start again until the accelerator was pressed when the auto hold was activated. So you should still be able to rest or foot off the brake during start/stop.

Start/stop is pretty pointless if you have autohold active. Once you release the brake pedal then the engine starts.

Turn off auto hold or unlatch your seatbelt before you put it in park.

See my parking brake doesn't auto activate when in park. It only activates if I take my seat belt off or open my door while brake hold is active. If autohold is off, the parking brake only comes on like normal.

Before installing the auto hold button the only time my car would automatically set the parking brake is if I opened the door. It still behaves the is way with the auto hold not activated. Ifsuto hold is activated and my seatbelt is on it will automatically set the parking brake when I put it in park. However it also automatically releases the parking brake if I shift into gear and apply the throttle.
Does your car not behave this way?

For anyone on the fence about it, it was very easy for me after following the OP's steps. Purchased the unit for $25 (here https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JLL11Y6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Waited about 4 weeks for it to arrive. Once I figured out how to remove the center MMI area it was easy to get the unit replaced (lift the leather from the shifter boot up, then lift the front of the console and work your way to the back where you need to apply some force). The OP makes the coding sound more difficult than it was for me; I didn't need HEX converters or anything. I simply changed one number to 9.
I did, however, get an Audi Brake Guard warning when I swapped the unit. Then, after coding, I got the TPMS warning. Both resolved themselves after cycling power on the car. Also, like many others, the auto-hold button did not work during the first drive. But it worked perfectly the next morning.
My only gripe with the system is the automatic parking brake. Can that be prevented while brake-hold is turned on?

There’s a post in the Vagcom mod list to turn the automatic parking brake on so that may give you insight in turning it off. Or if it’s like my car you can just disconnect your seatbelt right before you put it in park.

For anyone trying this, my experience with the "carefully remove it upward" instruction was like trying to pull the proverbial sword from the stone. I ended up using my trim tool with the widest blade, ~2.5", inserting it where the arrow for the "B" in the image is, and using the trim tool to press the center console insert forward. Pulling the insert up while pressing it forward did eventually let it pop loose.

I'm using my macbook pro and a HEX-NET. I have the 1AT ABS module, no ACC. As compared to the OP with a 2012 A7, there are some differences for my 2013 A7. The software and hardware scan as a later revision, same thing with the component.

Coding OP: 44 A7 0F 01 22 E5 F0 80 4B 00
Coding me: 44 A7 8F 03 22 E5 F1 C0 4B 00
The access code given by the OP, 61378, was not accepted. I waited about 15 minutes, tried the other access code found in this thread, 10505, and it was accepted. Selected byte 8, changed the value from 4B to 9B, and clicked "Do It!". The attempt to update the coding did not work. The coding remained with byte 8 as 4B. Tried it again, same result.
Pulled the new switch out and put the stock switch back in. Had to clear the parking brake error codes to get the parking brake to release. Looking for suggestions as to what to try next.
Thanks.

From the first post: “Now, if you use VCDS, you wouldn't be able to tick a box in long coding helper.
So you need to calculate Byte 8's HEX value.”
You have to do it exactly like the instructions list.
Delfin

Yes. There wasn't a check box for this in the "long coding helper", there was one tick box for something, but think it was for bit 5.
As per the original post, in byte 8 you have to set bits 4 and 7, and clear bit 6.
So my original value for byte 8 was 4B, so 0100_1011
The bit modifications are 10x1_xxxx, so the result is 1001_1011. I changed the value of byte 8 in VCDS-Mobile from 4B to 9B, clicked "Do It!", it eventually came back, but the coding value was not changed, i.e. byte 8 was still 4B.

Isn’t bit 6 supposed to be deactivated though? DB would be 11011011. I’ll try this today and see what happens. I also tried 7B and that didn’t work...7B was from the VCDS long code helper checkbox to turn on the trailer control. I wanted to see if the system would accept something else.

When you enter the Brake Module, under the Security Access option, there's "Change Service" Option. There you can change from Diagnostic mode to End of Assembly Line or whichever mode you need.
If memory serves, that was the same error I was getting (even though I (or anyone) changed byte 1). Changing from diagnostic to EOL should make it possible for you to save the change.

Sorry to ask, I'm trying to piece part together the steps for a '16 RS7/C7.5 as it sounds like several members have already figured this out. Does any one have the steps on how to activate this via OBDeleven? Is it just moving the current long coding to: 47A79649E2E569929B00?
Thanks!
Follow OP's instructions on how to generate the long code. Once in OBDEleven, Go into Brakes Module (03) and use the long code option to make the necessary changes. If you get the error described in post #111, See possible solution in post #67, post #113 describes how to change the service mode.
Cheers!

Posting with my experience retrofitting this on a 2012 A7
Bought the part as noted by OP from Amazon (~$30), took about a month to get here from China
Removing the MMI unit did require a decent amount of force
To remove the original parking brake switch, there are 3 retaining clips that hold the switch in place, 1 on each of the sides, and 1 in the front. I had to lightly unclip those, and the switch came out easily after.
My longcoding matched OPs @ 4B, so I updated the value to 9B
After installing, car did throw a TPMS error (fixed by resetting the TPMS value), and parking brake error (fixed by clearing codes).

I must be the most mechanically inept person ever. I made the mistake of trying this on a work night thinking it would be quick based upon other responses in this thread. Getting the control cover up was hard enough but undoing all of those plugs was darn near impossible, not to mention getting the switch out so that the new one could be replaced. I had to abandon ship for a weekend when I have more time to work on it. Any tips?

Getting the panel up was the hardest. I opened the ash tray/container in the front and levered the front up first, then worked around both sides. The back took some force but was doable.
There's only one plug you need to undo, the parking brake switch. Three tabs; one on both sides and one in front. I used a small screwdriver to help undo the front one. Switch lifts out the top.
Slide in new switch, which clips in easily. Plug connector back in.
Reseat panel and shifter boot.

Not really, I think it was just a tab on the bottom that you press inward (from bottom up) and then pull the plug out. I used my phone's front camera to get a good look at it while holding the panel up enough.

I recall that there were three tabs on the connector to the parking brake switch. They each needed to be pried out away from the switch, and then the switch easily disconnected from the connector.
Post your coding for the module and it is simple to figure out what you should change it to. Which security code you need use to get the coding change to work is a different matter.

Thanks to everyone here, and particularly SPectre and Delfin, I got the switch physically installed. I think I coded it correctly as well as one of the security codes in the thread eventually provided me access and the car accepted the coding. Drove it twice yesterday and I could not get the switch/auto hold to activate so here's to seeing if it will "take" after sitting for awhile or a few more power cycles. I also ran my battery down while I was coding the car and had to jump it. I am not sure if that had anything to do with it but I had some unique errors that I had to clear through VCDS (sport differential fault, air bag fault, rear spoiler fault) but no TPMS. They cleared and all seems fine now aside from the auto hold not working yet. I will report back.

Coding for the ABS module was 61BF584B86FD1AD21F00, I changed it to 61BF584B86FD1AD21B00, so using the long coding helper I changed 00011111 on bit 8 to 00011011. Does that sound right to everyone? I don't recall and emergency brake issues/alerts but I had so many errors in different modules that I may have forgotten. I cleared them all. I still have errors in central electronics and rear HVAC controls that are persistent but they don't seem to be related from their description.

I think it should be 61BF584B86FD1AD29F00
1F = 00011111
setting bit 4 and 7, making sure bit 6 is cleared (already was)
9F = 10011111

That could explain it. I will try and report back but I have no comprehension of this apparently. I was going left to right and counting. Hence, the 6th digit when reading left to right was 1 so I changed it to a 0 to turn it off. Going left to right, digits 4 and 7 were already activated.
Oh well. Thank you for the correction. I will try to fix it.

Further, it is persistent after the car power cycles and I haven't messed with the coding for stop start since I have an RS7 and it has no stop start from the factory.

Been running this mod since day one so thank you again for making it happen! One of the complaints I keep hearing is that the brake lights don’t stay on while stopped. I’m just curious if you have (or if anyone has) looked into the coding to address that?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cc_cWM400c
I have a bad knee, tired of holding the brake pedal while waiting for a traffic signal, so I did this.
No need to run wires all the way to the ABS unit from the centre console. All 4GX comes with this wiring factory installed. Nevertheless, note that this was done to 1AT PR code ABS module. If you have 1AS ABS module, it may still work, but it may stressing your ABS unit slightly more[facepalm]
DISCLAIMER
YOU DO IT UNDER YOUR RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING. NO GUARANTEE.
FYI. My ABS control unit is Part No SW: 4G0 907 379 G HW: 4G0 907 379 G Component: ESP PREMIUM H09 0250
Part required
:4g1927225b
A cheap one from Aliexpress or eBay will work.
Procedure
- lift gear shift boot cover
- lift MMI console
- Unplug parking break button connector
- replace existing with 4g1927225b
- assemble back
- get a coding tool(VCDS, VCP, ODIS-E)
Select Address 03 (ABS)
Access authorization -> Enter access code 61378
Coding -> Byte 8, Activate bit 4, 7 and deactivate bit 6.
Now, if you use VCDS, you wouldn't be able to tick a box in long coding helper.
So you need to calculate Byte 8's HEX value.
For example, my original ABS long coding is
44A70F0122E5F0804B00
and 4B near the end is Byte 8.
HEX 4B is Binary 01001011
Changing bits to 10011011
Converting binary 10011011 to HEX is 9B
So my new long coding is
44A70F0122E5F0809B00
https://www.binaryhexconverter.com/hex-to-binary-converter (hex-to-binary-converter)
DO NOT JUST PASTE MY ABS CODING TO YOUR ABS CODING.
JUST DO THE REQUIRED MATH(IT'S NOT EVEN A MATH) AND CHANGE ONLY REQUIRED VALUE.
Enter the coding and you will get immediately TPMS error.
Just restart the ignition and it should go away.
Enjoy!

My car has this feature from the factory. The brake lights do not stay on when auto hold is active. This is actually one of the things I like about auto hold. I use it so I don't blind the people in the car behind me, at the drive through.
There may not be coding to do what you want, as it's supposed to be like having the handbrake on, but with a much quicker engagement and release, and the handbrake doesn't leave the brake lights on.

For those of you that had a security code that worked, but your coding didn’t take, try S11820 as your code.

Also, I have never thought I was about to break plastic more than I did today while pulling up on the console trim.

Sounds like it was the DOT that made them remove it. Same reason we didn’t get dynamic turn signals until 6-7yrs after Europe, or matrix headlights, or emergency stop flashing brake lights, or remote open and close of windows using the key, or convex side mirrors to eliminate blindspota, or have ugly orange side markers cut into the bumpers for no good reason whatsoever, or don’t get the new LiDAR based self-driving functionally, etc...the regulators here prevent so much of the newer tech being installed on NA vehicles it’s ridiculous.

Banged this out yesterday after having been sitting on the parts for like 6 months, lol. Everything went perfectly, but a few tips for anyone jumping in:
When removing the center MMI console, for the love of jeebus, do not hulk it up from the rear (nearest ashtray). I read some previous posts where people are saying to just yank it and it'll give -- this is terrible advice(!) Having replaced interior trim multiple times, I can tell you from experience, this center console can -- and will -- break. The trick to getting it up is to put the shifter in neutral and lift the boot. Then, gently lift/pry (with a plastic trim tool) the rear (nearest ashtray) end of the console until the tabs release, then slowly work your way around the sides until those tabs release as well. Now, reach down as far as you can into the opening, and grab the front of the center console (nearest armrest) and give it a good tug upward. It should pop right out. From there, you can remove the plug/harness for the parking switch and then pop the switch out.
Despite having VCDS, I still opted to use OBD-Eleven simply because I had it on hand and didn't have to hulk a laptop in the car. So, in my case (not sure if this applies to VCDS as well), the long coding changes simply wouldn't take. I would get the error "Function cannot be performed mess. length or format incorrect". To resolve this, make sure you change the diagnostic mode to "End-of-line (EOL) Assembly", then you should be able to apply the long coding changes. In my case, access code 61378 worked perfectly (MY18 C7.5 MIB A6 3.0T).
Like many coding changes, you most likely will not see an immediate effect. Turning the car off and immediately back on is not likely to yield any positive effect. I see previous posters mentioning that it "started working the next day" or something similar. This is because the module was allowed time to shutdown and fully cycle. You do not need to "wait", instead, after you make the change all you need to do is reboot the module. With OBDEleven, you can reset the module within the app. With VCDS, just be sure you check the "Soft reboot" checkbox when applying the long coding changes. After a quick reboot, it should immediately start working.
After driving around with the new option for a bit, it's definitely a much appreciated feature. Stop and go traffic is more tolerable, and I was impressed at how quickly it "released" versus the normal e-brake. Definitely an A+ quality-of-life mod! [:D]

The whole thing took me, maybe, 30 minutes (and that's with laying towels down over the console, etc)? What seems to trip most people up is removing the center console, but as long as you go about it correctly, it's not that difficult. One other thing, when removing the switch itself, there are 3 tabs -- 2 on the 'long' sides, and 1 at the top 'short' side. The 2 on the sides you can easily lift with your fingernail -- the 1 on the top, at least in my case, required prying with a small flathead screwdriver to release it. I found that sliding the screwdriver up as far as it could go, then slightly twisting it (rather than 'prying', which is likely to snap the piece off) caused it to release easily. I was then able to release the side tabs with my finger.
To make things easier, I removed the plug/harness for the start button as well, this let me just lift and flip the entire console over the shifter so I could attack it from beneath, rather than trying to futz and fidget with it from an awkward angle.
If you're considering swapping out your start/stop button for a red-ringed one, this would also be a great time to do that since you're already there. :)

I finally discovered the S11820 code, but it takes a while if you have tried the wrong code too many times. When I used VCDS it would just give me an error when I tried the code. When I used obdeleven it actually said it was locked due to, too many retries. I just let it sit overnight and re-tried with the new code and it worked.
Not sure if it helps but let me know I will be glad to try to help ya out.

Thanks for the reply, I was pretty sure it should work as a regular e-brake switch without coding. Parking brake error on the dash, and ACC/braking guard unavailable. Tried to clear fault codes with VCDS but they come back. Switch light is on but brake won’t disable, when you try the light on the switch flashes and the PARK light on the dash flashes too, but it won’t turn off.

Just for shits and giggles, try doing it with the E-Brake disengaged. When I changed the switch, I had the same situation inverted (I couldn't engage the E-Brake, same ACC and parking brake errors on the dash). Once I programmed the module and power-cycled the car, everything went away and started working properly.

Well F me that worked, I now have a working e-brake with the auto-hold switch! Coding was accepted but the when I press the auto-hold button it doesn't light up. I think you said the same happened to you at the start when you first coded too? Did you have to do anything to get it working other than just drive around a bit?

Yes, the same thing happened. The switch started lighting properly after a couple of power cycles.

This is a long thread, but I think the lessons from the 5 pages are:
(1) read all 5 pages;
(2) do the coding
(3) re-read if trouble comes up - someone's probably seen it before
(4) power cycle the car for a day or a couple of times
(5) then freak out if the problem persists.
This is NOT aimed at any of the previous posters, but just a heads-up for those coming next. This seems like it can be a glitchy mod, but almost everyone has gotten it to work with trial and error, and some have just skated through and been trouble-free.

So your current binary according to your post would be*
0001 1111 in binary.* *
1 is on 0 is off.* *You need to enable bits 4 and 7.* *Then disable 6.
In your case reading from RIGHT to left or 0-7 bits...

Some quick tips from installing; When removing the boot trim, don't pry on the silver/chrome surround, that doesn't hold the boot in. Press on the leather surround itself on the sides and it'll pop right out, very minimal effort. Stick your hand down in towards the cup holders and give a very firm pull and it'll pop out rather forcefully, this is normal. I personally found it easier to disconnect the four harnesses that connect the unit and remove it from around the shifter. A lot easier to get all three tabs at once and not break them. When removing the switch, press it outwards from the bottom, it should pop right out, snap the new one in, hook everything back up, press the controller back in place and turn on the car. Be prepared for an onslaught of scary looking messages, but don't sweat it. Turn the car off, plus in your diag tool, turn the car back on and clear out all codes and it will behave again.
FWIW, I did my code change prior to doing the work and the ABS controller didn't seem to care that I had even without the new switch installed. I use security code S11820 and it worked on the first try.
Best of luck, a great and easy mod for very little money. I got my factory switch from a German seller for $30 shipped off eBay. Just need a quick cleaning and it was perfect.

Same here. I ordered my first switch from China “saved” $20 on the same option from Germany. Switch didn’t work, no matter my coding the auto-hold wouldn’t enable, so ordered one from Germany it arrived way quicker and it works perfectly - didn’t even need to change my coding because it was correct before I just had a faulty switch. $20 saved ended up being $30 and a whole bunch of time wasted.

I agree how finicky it is. I figured out the coding but unsure what I did wrong. I got an incorrect code length message or something like that and it didn't take. I restarted the program and re-entered the security code that began with S and not the one the vag=com suggested . After that it took right away. I cycled the emergency brake a couple of times and cleared the errors and everything seems like it should be working as it should.
One thing I noticed. If you have it turned on it automatically sets the parking brake when you put it in park. It doesn't if not pushed.

2. Someone mentioned to remove the boot trim “just press down on leather surround itself.” What does that mean? Push down on the leather at the edges next to the chrome trim?
3. Dumb question but does this hold your car stopped when you do a full stop? Meaning this allows you to lift your foot off the brake and just stay stopped and when you’re ready to go, just hit the gas?
Thanks!

1. 65B64F03A66DF2C09B00 < this is your coding change based on your screenshot.
2. Put the gear shift in N and use a plastic trim tool to pry the leather boot up at the chrome trim and pull it up over the shifter and leave it there. Then open the cubby and lift the console starting there moving backwards towards the arm rest.
3. Yes that’s exactly what it does, when you come to a stop you get a green PARK on the dash then you can let go of the brake and the car will email stationary until you press the gas.

OK yay I just did it. Prob took me 45 mins b/c I had to stop and take a phone call.
So the boot is real easy to remove and like everyone says, just push it inward (near chrome trim inwards). Then I opened ash tray and lifted it from there. The first 2/3rd of the lifting was easy. The base 1/3rd near arm rest is really tough and I tried plastic tools etc. The answer was to grab it from one side at a time and just put some force into. Then it comes off. From there, I just looked underneath to see where clips where to disconnect switch and pop it from under upwards. Attached new switch and using soft reset in VCDS allowed it to work (or so it seems, right away....I didnt get a chance to drive it yet).

Finally got around to trying this again and got it to work.
Used the S11820 access code, the one in the original post not accepted.
Perhaps my previous struggles with this were due entirely to user incompetence, but this was the first time that I tried to do it where I did not have the parking brake set when I shut off the car before swapping the switch, and before was trying to use my mac and the web interface to the VCDS hexnet. Used a PC and the USB cable this time.

Hi folks.
I have installed the switch but having a problem with coding. Am using VCDS. Had to use Security Access code 10505 as posted by Lord_Gandul.
My ABS control unit is Part No SW: 4G0 907 379 T Component: ESP PREMIUM H09 0100.
Current coding is 61B75B4B86EDDAD21F00
I changed Byte 8 to 10011011 (ie 9B), which generates the new coding value (1F changes to 9B) but when I click on “Do it!” I get a message “Coding rejected. Error 13: incorrect message length or invalid format.”
Car is an early 2016 RS7.
Suggestions?
Any help will be appreciated.

I'll look at my coding later for the auto hold since we both have 16 RS7s.
Managed to get the new coding to take. Security access code S11820 as posted by acr89 was what worked. I guess this code is the one that works on newer cars.
Thanks for your offer to help.

Hi Spidey,
I had the same issue. I exited and started the program again and everything took. I think in my case I entered a different security code initially. My coding was the same as yours i believe.
Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Just want to say thanks to everyone that has posted with helpful tips in this thread and the OP for starting it all off. I bought the switch for my 2016 A7 TDI and was able to successfully install and code the autohold switch and coded both autohold and auto start/stop functions to memorize the state before the vehicle is turned off.

Special thanks to OP for sharing this mod and thanks to everyone that has contributed to make this a quick 30min job (spent 1/3 of the time contemplating if to pull hard on bottom end of the console)
Received my OEM part from Poland few hours ago and completed the install/coding with ease on my C7.5 '16 A7 using OBDEleven. Power cycled vehicle once, cleared error codes and voila! it works instantly in my garage. Won't use it much perhaps but can't say no to OEM mods like this. 191831191832

Has anyone done this on a C7 S6 to your knowledge? No reference comes up in my search. These cars don’t have auto start/stop and different brakes. Thanks!

The 1AT is a PR code that will be listed on the vehicle information sticker that is in the well / recess for the spare tire.

I have a spare switch), I was able to install this today, but I was unable to get it to work after coding.
Existing Coding: 65B65701A66DEA804B00

I thought I did everything correct, but I'm wondering if anyone has ideas to get this to work. I'm on a 14 S6. Thanks!

I don’t see any error codes. The button doesn’t illuminate when pressed (parking brake light and control works manually) and it just seems like nothing is happening. Thanks!

if that doesn't work, what tool did you use to do the coding? Please post screenshots of you can. I can help if you used OBD11 if you used VAG Com hopefully someone hee can chime in..

Hmm, I was showing what it would be when I hit to submit, and then I did. It’s 9B now.
I can double-check that it actually was saved, but I thought I did that.

Yes, I would definitely double check you coding to be sure it saved. One wrong mouse click and it doesn't...

It works! It just took a few more restarts and an overnight.
I thought you might like some more pics that I didn’t see similar versions of and might have been helpful for me when installing.

Here’s one more pic that shows how the switch clips in. With this, I think it’ll be easier for people to see how to remove without having to pull the stop start switch too.

Bringing this semi-zombified thread back to life, I was able to complete this mod on my 2017 S6, only curious thing was that my coding it Byte 8 was 1B from the factory, meaning that the requisite bits were already checked, and there was some other difference. I changed it to 9B and everything works so far, no issues at all, but I am going to try reverting back to 1B and seeing if the button/function remains active, as the different bits in 1B don't correspond to 4,6 or 7.
I used my VAG-COM, long coding helper, and simply went to byte 8 and changed the hex value directly to 9B. Will update once I revert to 1B and see if it still works.

Has anyone gotten auto hold to work with start/stop? I was told in other markets that it will activate start stop and shut off the engine while holding the brake. Maybe someone from outside of the US can chime in and describe how start/stop functions in conjunction with factory installed auto hold? Also, has anyone heard the quiet air leak type noise while auto hold is activated? When I’m on the brake the noise is gone but when I’m off the brake and auto hold is on I can hear it.

My year S6 doesn’t turn the engine off at a stop, so I can’t comment there, but the only noises I have are a quiet click when the brake holds and the sound when the parking brake engages if the car gets turned off or the seat is unbuckled, etc.

If I let go of the brake and the car shuts off from auto start stop feature the car will hold itself in place but the car will turn back on. So the car will hold itself in place with auto hold but releasing brake will make car turn back on if it shut off from auto start stop.

Just completed this mod today, thank you to this thread, best $35 I've spent lol. I did the coding a few days prior the installation, so the button and auto hold feature worked right after the installation and dtc clear.

Be careful where you buy your button from. From my experience if its coming from China the button was cheap, the light was off and it just didn't feel right. I found an original from Germany and it looks and feels original not a cheap imitation.
