View Full Version : Check out the "Winter Beater Challenge" videos by ECS

Hey guys, I didn't see this posted here yet and I thought it was pretty cool.

ECS Tuning is doing a video series on 5 cheap Euro winter beaters. I'd say it's shaping up to be an interesting series. Kind of a "real world" Top Gear challenge.

Things I found notable so far:
- Wait, only ONE (1) of these guys has AWD? lol
- In the 2nd video, Will explained that he (mis)diagnosed a faulty auxiliary fan and got the part from a junkyard. This is odd seeing that it's an ECS video.
- I, for one, was actually looking forward to the obvious product placement potential here. Bolting shiny new parts onto piles of junk. "These beaters are pretty rough, but parts from ECS keep these heaps on the road" <ratchets click in background>. Like that. But instead they give us video of him pulling a junkyard fan assembly. Just, very odd.
- Not a dig, really. The videos are cool.
- I can't wait for the 200 quattro overview video. Watching somebody diagnose CIS fuel injection will be priceless.

Would you expect anything less from a company that has a Facebook page dedicated to bashing it with tens of thousands of members?

I'm not the biggest ECS fan, myself. But this content is cool and relevant to my interests. I think others may agree. I hope they run with this and keep it to a moderate dab of product placement and copious amounts of actual repairing and hooning.

ECS is like the ex that gave you the Clap.....while you don't want to use her, sometimes that's the only way you can go for a ride......[=(]

One other thing I noticed - Will was welding in his exhaust (rather, deleting his entire muffler), on his back in some small grungy garage with his BMW on jack stands. I feel like if ECS is using this for promotional footage they should let these guys use their shop and lifts and stuff. At the very least they would have better lighting for the videos. I'm *sure* there's plenty of shop time for these piles coming, so hopefully that's how it plays out.

I wonder if they're going for a more down-to-earth or DIY vibe with this. Would make sense in light of all the complaints and being out of touch with their customer base for the past years.

I like that 540 Touring the most to be honest.

Quite surprised not to see the B5 A4 on there. Surely there's a ton of these w/ Quattro for $1500.

Well there is the Audi 200

Yeah, I thought the B5 A4 quattro 5MT would be an ideal choice for this. It could really clean up in what I hope to see: a snowy hill climb challenge.

[EDIT: douchey comment removed. If you can't say something nice...]

Amazing sound from the Audi.

Certainly the coilovers on the Mercedes gave him the win. The Audi looks to have some decent rubber for this sort of thing, although he probably has the driver mod, too. Would not have predicted him to come in above both BMW's.
