View Full Version : Me and my cursed car...

Hello Audizine!
I am back with another dilemma. This is kind of a continuation from my previous post found here (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/832896-It-rained-and-this-is-how-my-car-responded). My car was with a workshop being repaired and they called me today to come see them and take the car back to audi for further work as they didn't want to do it.
What work?
Well, one day I was driving my car and got a message saying that the engine speed is limited to 4,000 RPM and it threw a CEL and EPC light. It drove fine but I took the car to audi the next day and the SA there (my friend) checked it and said the error message is intake manifold runner stuck open and he said it will cost me around $1,500 - $1,800 to fix. He recommended me to get it done from outside as it will be cheaper.
They suspected that the sensor 06E907386L is bad and needs replacing.
However I told the guy at the other independent workshop about the situation and the diagnosis from Audi. He said that's unlikely and that he will diagnose again. The error code he found was:
P201400 intake manifold running position sensor switch circuit which was on the G336 Intake Sensor. He tried to replace the part but said that the issue didn't go and that the engine will have to come off to access and replace the intake manifold.
He said I dont want to take the responsibility of removing and installing the engine so its better that I take the car to Audi as they will also provide me with warranty on this work.
Now I have a few questions:
- Where exactly is the intake manifold?
- Do they really need to take the engine out to replace it?
- Audi would charge me an arm and a leg along with my kidney to do that kind of work, so what are my options?
- Is there anyway I can involve Audi AG into this?
Additional Info:
The car is out of warranty
The car is at 80,000 km / 49,700 miles now
I live in Saudi Arabia
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Intake manifold runs along the front and both sides of the engine, think of it as the headers on non reversed flow engines that run on side of the engine.. I’d say dropping the engine is plausible.

so...this error message only came on once and hasnt reappeared? if this is the case i dont see the need to jump to conclusions as of yet....unless it is a common error that pops up it may not be as serious as all the work needed to track it own...just my 2 cents.

No need to drop the engine. Will need to remove the bumper and tilt the whole lock carrier (the section that holds the radiator in place) forward. Whole thing can be done in a day.

Not to bring an old thread back, but did your issue ever get resolved? I keep getting the same faults you posted in your other thread:
- TPMS, Tire Pressure System Fault
- Parking Brake Fault
- Air Suspension Fault
- Stabilisation Control: (ABS / ESC) Fault
I've been to the dealer 3 times because of it, and each time they either fix another issue, or a different fault shows up. This time the Stuck Intake Runner as you mentioned in this thread.
Dealer is saying the car still shows a tune, and they want to replace the computer, because they already flashed it back to stock after I visited them the first time, but they want me to pay for the computer....I have a warranty.
Debating on taking it to a local Audi repair shop and not the dealer, but wanted to see if your issue ever got resolved. Or if it's something like replacing some sensors, I can do that probably.

I had the same issues above and it was all due to a faulty speed sensor. The indy shop I go to was replacing a bad wheel bearing and must've busted the speed sensor somehow (faults didn't show up for another ~150mi though) - any recent work done on the car?

Nothing not done by the dealer.
All of these faults first showed up about a week after I bought the car in March. I took it to the dealer to diagnose and thats when I discovered it was Tuned by APR, and it also had a coolant leak. They fixed the coolant leak and reflashed the ECM to stock.
Since then, about every 400-600 miles all of the faults come back. I took it back to them about 3 weeks ago, and they couldn't see the faults when the read the car, but at that time the passenger motor mount was showing a fault, and was bad so they replaced it.
I got the car back last Tuesday, and 4 days ago on Sunday all of the faults showed back up again. I took it to them Monday morning and they still don't see the faults, but now are saying they get a fault of a stuck intake runner.
They still have my car, but aren't doing any more work to it because they think replacing the ECM is going to fix the issues, I'm not an Audi mechanic and I disagree with them.

If any of the many microcontroller outputs get erratic on the CAN Bus (https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/controller-area-network), it cause a lot of random false errors to show up.
Here is some views of the air flow scheme on the 4.0T from SSP 920223.

Wonder if the dealer can test that output sensor, if it's bad it doesn't seem impossible to get to.
Though I doubt that would fix the issue I'm having with all the other faults. They all seem related to some safety/braking,suspension issue.

I had the manifold issue and it was fixed by doing this tsb.
Dealerships always blame the tune like somebody hooked up the ecu to a 240V plug or something.
Sounds odd that they cannot see the other codes you see. Maybe get vagcom and doublecheck? Otherwise it be worthwhile to look up the wiring diagram through erwin and find the common source/wire.

I have Vagcom, I haven't read the codes since I got the car back a week ago, and last time I read them I don't remember seeing the Intake Manifold Runner fault, I'll have to check again when I pick up the car.
Did you do the TSB yourself? Do you know whats involved to getting to the parts? I noticed the TSB says the engine does not have to be removed.

Got a call from the dealer and it was the Map sensor, not the intake runner, but they still want to do the ECM because the car isn't running bad, it's saying no signal on their scanner.
I asked them if they could keep it, and drive it. They agreed and are going to drive it with their scanner on it, so when all the faults get thrown again, hopefully they can see them. Not sure why my Vagcom scan can see all of the faults and theirs can't?
Still doesn't explain the now map sensor, but I guess its a start. Been there for over 30 days in the last 4 months for the same issue. Everyone I talk to keeps saying lemon law, but not sure that applies for used cars.
