I think a lot ppl will have different answers but I live in Cali and I use 0w40... when I had bought my b5 initially the seals on the turbo was bAd and would spew white smoke sometimes out the tail (before I changed the turbo)... my first oil change I put 10w30 and the white smoke got way worst like instantaneously I hella blamed the guys at the oil change spot think they did something wrong.. that being said 30 weight oil is thinner which the revieled the turbo leak much more than the 40w I had then drain and put 40w that day my car seems to like thicker stuff

Been using only Mobil 1 0W-40 on my 1.8T B5 and B6 for a combined 360k miles with absolutely no complaints. Iím in NY so the weather is all over the place and itís been fine. Also used the M1-301 filter or Mann 940/25 filter, whichever I could grab first.

5W-40 or 0W-40 would be fine. The 0W is helpful for colder climates since it's less viscous (thick) and flows more easily compared to a 5W during a cold start.

There should be a section in your owners manual that says what oil weight to use based on your climate.

Also x2 on using the Mann 940/25 filter. I usually buy them in bulk since I have multiple cars with the 1.8T.

Mobil 1 0W-40, Live in the midwest and never had issues. Usually only around $25 for 5 quarts at Walmart.
