Hey Guys,

Thinking about trading in my 2014 Q50 AWD with 48k miles( MPG is terrible @ 15-16) for a 2012 S4 with 89K. The hard thing for me is justifying the mileage difference, I own the Q50 and would be looking to do a strait swap with the dealer, I wont I have a car payment. My wife and I open a business this year and I do not want any extra expenses but the $250 a month I'm spending in gas is killing me. I commute about 60 miles a day back and forth to work and sit in traffic a lot, would the S4 MPG be better? Ive been on here for awhile and se guys getting in the mid 20's which I'd love to get. Also just want to be sure the S4 would last to 150k or so. I will keep up with the all the maintenance, I am very anal about those things :) One thing that is making me EH is the fluids checked every month? Are S4's know for oil consumption? I'm diligent on maintenance but that's a little crazy?

Thank you

The S4 is not going to have better mileage, the V6 supercharged likes to drink. I have not been tracking recently but I think I was getting about the same as you have now. If you want a 20mpg car you are probably going to have to go some 4 cylinder car like a golf R (its not that much better). If you are trying to save money, gas, and have something fun get a GTI.

Gas mileage comes down to driving style and engine configuration. If you’re looking for better mpg look elsewhere, the S4 realistically gets 16-18 in the city and 24-26 on the highway.

If you want the Audi badge and some of the performance you’d be better off with an a4 or S3.

Between maintenance and other expenses you’d save next to nothing by switching from the Q50 imo.

I’ve been commuting in a 2012 S4 for a number of years now. I’m back and forth between Boston and NJ every week and during the week, commute in traffic into my Boston office. Flat out highway travel (NJ to Boston) I routinely get 28 mpg and often there are pockets of heavy traffic in this commute. Day to day commuting into the office is always in crazy traffic - lucky to get beyond 2nd gear. In these commutes I’m routinely getting between 19-21 mpg. I now have 178,000 miles. Not a single issue and only routine service ( oil changes, brakes twice, etc). Still even running the stock clutch. Love this car and love commuting in it.

Thanx for the info guys, Driving style is "Grandma" LOL I sit in traffic and 80% of the time I'm luck if I get into 3rd gear mostly stop and go, a few stops where I get to 50-60 but then right back to a stop and 30 MPH if luck. The only time I get any freedom with the car is Saturdays.

I’m very very happy with my 2010 6mt for a commuter from Long Island into queens/NYC.

Ride in is usually good. But the ride home is stop and go. Averaging high 20s all combined.

85k miles now (bought with 67k) and i have done both front wheel bearings, thermostat (fuck my life situation in my in laws driveway in Boston), rear brakes, oil and tires.

not a bad price IMO. Make sure that tranny is shifting smooth.

If I were you, I would just keep the Q50. I spend a little over $200 a month in gas and average 14-18 MPG combined on highway and city driving but I'm tuned. It's only 2-3 MPG worse than stock though. You would probably get the same gas mileage on the S4. Also, I'm sure maintaining the Q50 is probably cheaper. I have a Lexus IS350 and all the parts for that thing are way cheaper than my S4.

Thanx again, they just dropped the price to $16,8, makes it tempting but from what I gather the MPG's would be the same. My Q50 is CPO ( Bumper to bumper) warranty covers to 2022 unlimited miles and major maintenance is 10K miles away, oil changes cost me about $100( Redline Syn oil) . guess I'll keep it. I'll start looking for S3's or Golf R. The 4cly should be better MPG's. Thanx all!
