View Full Version : Peeling Chrome and Sticky Seat Backs with CPO

So I recently took my 2013 S4 in for an oil change and inspection and mentioned to them that I have chrome peeling off my ash tray sliding cover and that my seat backs are unusually sticky.
Here's a little background, I brought it in about a year ago with the sticky seat back issue and the dealership decided to have the detailing team thoroughly clean the seat backs as their remediation.
Once I came back to pick the car up, I touched the seat backs again, and they were way worse than when I had brought it in.
I spoke with the service rep at the audi dealership and he agreed that it actually made it worse and that he would order the seat backs and let me know when they come in and are ready to install.
This guy ends up leaving the dealership (not on good terms from what it sounds like) and he never called me back to schedule installation of the replacement seat backs.
Now during this recent appointment, the service rep is telling me that the CPO warranty does not cover the ash tray or the seat backs.
Does anyone have any experience with a CPO warranty not covering issues with the interior of their vehicle?

CPO provides drivetrain coverage. It’s not bumper to bumper like the factory warranty. I believe there is a thread here dedicated to CPO questions.

The seat backs and ash tray would generally only be covered during the first year of the factory warranty. I would try saddle soap with a brush and then Lexol cleaner on the seat back if it is leather(I don't remember if it is leather or vinyl) or mineral spirits with microfiber towel followed by 303 Protectant if it is vinyl to clean them. Not sure how hard it is to replace the ash tray cover. Cost should not be high

Can't see cpo covering interior items like leather and Ash tray. Even factory warranty when new only covers that stuff for a year

My dealership replaced my start button for free on my CPO when it started pealing. I kind of think it's what kind of mood they are in...

Yeah, this is my first CPO vehicle so I wasn't sure what the experience others have had.
The are willing to replace the seat backs with an out-the-door cost of ~$570 (down from the initial/normal $800ish).
The ash tray cover was quoted at ~$300.
I'll likely replace the ashtray myself as the center console isn't that difficult to take apart, and I'll see if I can find a used part that's not peeling.
They are actually considering replacing the seat backs due to the unique situation and the fact that when they attempted to fix it, they actually made it worse.
If they end up not covering it, I'll try to negotiate a better rate to have them do it. If that doesn't work, I might just attempt to try the above suggestions and see if I can make it any better.
It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have OCD around sticky surfaces. I can't stand going places to eat or drink that have sticky countertops/tables or sticky floors, I just go crazy.
There is this Mexican restaurant near me, Mad Mex, that has awesome happy hour specials and great margaritas, but I feel like a fly on sticky tape whenever I set foot in that place. [:/]
That's what my seat backs remind me of...
Ya the seat backs sounds terrible as its a important part of the car that gets touched alot.... Ash tray would bother me tho.
I don't think I have ever once touched the seat backs in mine.

I don't know about the seatbacks on the B8.5 S4 but the seatbacks on my B7 A4 are easy to replace. If you can find a junkyard that would sell you a pair of used seatbacks and install them yourself, that could be a fallback position; however, I would press to get the dealership or AoA to take care of the entire cost of the seatback situation. Learn from the current Trump presidency -- or The Art of the Deal -- ask for the moon and stars, then negotiate backwards, if necessary.
