Hey guys, I just picked up a set of Hawk rear brake pads and I found out that you need a VAGCOM in order to put the rear calipers into service mode to change it. I can't really afford to shell out for a ross-tech device and a laptop for it at the moment, so I was hoping to see if there's anyone local who might be able to help me out.

I'm too far away but Carista is a more cost effective option (pay per use).

If no one can help you, you can go this route:
Rent a VagCom Cable

You'll also need access to a laptop though.

You dont need vagcom. You do need a caliper piston retracting tool. You vkcan usually borrow buy or rent from local autoparts store

You need a way to apply current to the motor that retracts the rotor into service mode. There's a janky way to do it without software. But no "tool" is gonna accomplish it.

"Open Rear Parking Brake
The EPB system must be put into a service mode prior to the calipers being removed from the vehicle so the pistons can be pushed into the caliper housing. The specific Basic Setting groups vary depending on the vehicle and repair procedure to be performed."
You can't just push the Pistons in if ebrake is on -_- at least not on the cars I've worked with.

There are 3 different ways you can do the rear brakes on these cars.
1. You can do them using vag com or any 9 V battery to power retract the parking brake and then use of AC clamp to just push the piston straight back in
2. You can unbolt the little parking brake motor on the back of the caliper which is just two easy bolts to undo and then you can stick a T40 in there and retract the parking brake manually and then you're also doing the same thing pushing the piston gently back in with a C clamp straight back

3. The final way is to use a brake piston retracting tool that spins the piston backward in a clockwise motion while you're pushing back on it. This is the way I just got done doing it.
